- In 4998 (1237 CE), Rabbi Abraham Maimuni died.
- In 5554 (1793 CE), during the French Revolution, Strasbourg, Alsace-Lorraine, France prohibited milah and the wearing of beards. It also ordered the burning of books written in Hebrew.
- In 5572 (1811 CE), Rabbi Boruch of Medzhybizh died.
- In 5679 (1918 CE), Polish forces attacked the Jews of Lviv.
- In 5702 (1941 CE), the Chełmno extermination camp in Poland opened. On the same day, 1,500 "old and weak" Jews from the Riga Ghetto were murdered by the S.S. in a forest near Biķernieki.
