- 1894 - The Republic of Hawaii is founded with Sanford B. Dole as president. The short-lived government was created to manage the Hawaiian Islands until they could be annexed by the United States.

- 1887 - David Kalakaua, monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii, is forced to sign the Bayonet Constitution giving Americans more power in Hawaiʻi while stripping Hawaiian citizens of their rights.
- 1898 - William McKinley signs the Newlands Resolution, officially annexing Hawaiʻi and making it a territory of the United States.

- 1824 - Kamehameha II, second king of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, dies of measles in London.
- 1827 - The first Roman Catholic Mass is celebrated in the Hawaiian Islands by members of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. It would be the foundation of the present-day Diocese of Honolulu.
