• 1874 - Lunalilo, the successor to King Kamehameha V and the first elected King of Hawaiʻi, dies in Honolulu after slightly more than a year on the throne.

• 1779 - Captain James Cook is stoned to death by Native Hawaiians near Kealakekua on the Island of Hawaiʻi.

• 1978 - The first Ironman Triathlon is held in Honolulu after Navy Commander John Collins comes up with the idea of combining three races to determine who is the most fit among runners, swimmers, and cyclists.

February 20

• 1901 - The legislature of the Territory of Hawaiʻi, created as a result of annexation under the Newlands Resolution, convenes for the first time.

February 24

• 1989 - United Airlines Flight 811, bound for New Zealand from Honolulu, Hawaii, rips open during flight, sucking 9 passengers out of the business-class section.
