• 1969 - An explosion aboard the USS Enterprise near Hawaiʻi kills 27 people.

January 15

• 1894 - The Hawaiian Electric Company places a notice informing its customers that it would immediately begin supplying incandescent lighting and electric motors.

January 17

• 1893 - The Citizen's Committee of Public Safety, led by Lorrin A. Thurston, overthrows the government of Queen Liliʻuokalani of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi.

January 18

• 1778 - James Cook is the first known European to discover the Hawaiian Islands, which he names the "Sandwich Islands".

January 20

• 1891 - David Kalākaua I, the last King of Hawaiʻi, dies in San Francisco. He is succeeded by his sister, Liliʻuokalani.

January 25

• 1941 - The Apostolic Vicariate of the Hawaiian Islands is elevated to the dignity of a diocese by Pope Pius XII. It becomes the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu.

January 29

• 1891 - Liliʻuokalani is proclaimed Queen of Hawaiʻi. She will be its last monarch.
