Zyxel Networks Corp. (Chinese: 兆勤科技股份有限公司) is a Taiwanese networking company headquartered in the Hsinchu Science Park, Taiwan. The company specializes in providing cloud networking[1] and security solutions[2], with licensing for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). Founded in 1989 by Shun-I Chu, Zyxel Networks operates three research centers, and has 35 branch offices worldwide.

Origin of the Zyxel Name

[edit]

When Zyxel Networks' founder, Shun-I Chu, was establishing the company in the late 1980s, he chose a unique approach to naming. While many companies in Taiwan were selecting names starting with 'A' to appear first in alphabetical listings, Chu opted for 'Zyx,' a combination of letters from the end of the alphabet. The addition of 'el' meant to symbolize excellence completed the name.[3]

Pronunciation of Zyxel

[edit]

The name "Zyxel" is pronounced as /ˈzaɪsɛl/. It breaks down as follows:

  • The "Zy" part is pronounced like "zai" (/zaɪ/), rhyming with "sky."
  • The "xel" part is pronounced like "sel" (/sɛl/), with a soft "s" and a schwa sound, similar to the ending of the word "pencil."[4]
