The Band of Hope was a New Zealand jug band that played folk music in Christchurch in the 1960s. The band was heavily influenced by American bluegrass music, country, blues and folk.
Folk music was an integral part of the Christchurch music scene in the early 1960s. Various coffee bars around the city hosted groups well before the University Of Canterbury Folk Music Club was officially born in 1964.
The band was originally called The Lumpy Toys & Sweet Potatoes Band.[1]
They released their first single, "Downtown Blues", in 1967 through Kiwi Records.[2]
