In 2009 the region of Central Florida was surrounded by the companies of Orlando Opera, Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Florida Opera Theatre. In 2016, Opera Orlando was formed from Florida Opera Theatre under the leadership of Gabriel Preisser.[1]

Opera Orlando's mainstage performances are held at the Steinmetz Hall at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts as well as other venues including the Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater.[2]

History

[edit]

By April 16, 2009, the company of Orlando Opera filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy.[3] The space that closure left was temporarily filled by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra[3] as well as the Florida Opera Theatre. Under the direction of the Florida Opera Theatre, Opera Orlando was founded in 2016 by general director and CEO Gabriel Preisser.[1]

The company hosted a fundraising gala in March that same year, earning donations from about 200 artists and supporters. This fundraising effort led to the company's inaugural productions in April 2016. These were namely Mozart's Impresario and Poulenc's Les Mamelles de Tirésias on-stage at the Alexis and Jim Pugh Theatre at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.[2]

In the same year, Opera Orlando hosted a benefit concert, One Voice Orlando: A Celebration in Song,[4] in the wake of the Pulse nightclub shooting. Opera Orlando collaborated with twenty businesses and organizations to organize the benefit, which was held in the Walt Disney Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.[2]

Mission

[edit]

The mission of Opera Orlando is to produce operatic productions and offer educational programs to central Florida audiences.[5]

Programs

[edit]
Puppetry in The Juniper Tree during the 2023/24 season

Opera Orlando Youth Company

[edit]

The Opera Orlando Youth Company trains aspiring artists ages 8-18, focusing on classical music, opera, and theatre. Workshops emphasize vocal techniques, performance skills, and artistic creativity. Those in the youth company can also become involved in Mainstage productions. This company was showcased in the 2023/24 staging of The Juniper Tree.[6]

Studio Artists

[edit]

The Studio Artists program is designed for post-graduate singers, ages 24+. This program gives accepted auditionees the chance to gain performance experience. Participants cover Mainstage roles, working alongside guest artists in masterclass settings, and receive training. This program includes community outreach events in Central Florida as well.[7]

Sings! Summer Institute for the Next Generation of Singers

[edit]

In 2020, Opera Orlando began their Sings! Summer Institute for the Next Generation of Singers program, a six-day summer intensive aimed at high school and undergraduate college students, ages 15 to 20.[8]

During this time, typically in late July, students are instructed directly by Opera Orlando staff and artists. Participants receive coaching on individual repertoire, attend opera-specific masterclasses, and discuss what a career in opera entails, such as earning a music degree. Students are informed about both artistic and business matters. Classes include resume-building. Participants have the opportunity to take headshots and perform in a recorded showcase concert that may be added to their portfolio.[9]

Community Efforts

[edit]

Opera Orlando organizes in-school opera previews, masterclasses with company artists, and invitations to dress rehearsals for MainStage productions.[10]

The in-school opera previews introduce students to the current season's mainstage productions and offer discussions with Studio Artists; the invited Studio Artists perform an abridged program in the classroom. Lesson plans are provided to teachers as additional educational material.[10]

During a masterclass, there is an opportunity for singers to receive feedback from teaching artists in order to prepare for solos, ensemble positions, or Thespian competitions. Schools may also register for students to attend one of the season's final dress rehearsals, providing a "behind the scenes" production.[10]

Collaborations

[edit]

Education programs and the Opera Orlando Youth Company are supported by the City of Orlando, as well as an Apprentice Pilot Program that Opera Orlando and the Stetson University of Music and Opera partnered to create.[11]

Annual events

[edit]

The Mozart Dinner

[edit]

Presented at the Steinmetz Hall, the event serves as an annual fundraiser with a three-course dinner, drinks, and a musical program.[12]

A Toast! A Toast! A Toast!

[edit]

Held at the Citrus Club in downtown Orlando, singers run previous scenes from the company’s current season.[13]
