One Hundred Years of Solitude is an upcoming magical realism drama miniseries based on the novel of the same name by Gabriel Garcia Marquez starring Claudio Cataño, Jerónimo Barón, Marco González, Leonardo Soto, Susana Morales, Ella Becerra Carlos Suaréz, Moreno Borja and Santiago Vásquez. A coproducition between the Netflix and Productora Dynamo , the series follows the story of the Buendia family, spamming 7 generations, in the aislated town of Macondo. José Rivera serves as the main writer, with Natalia Santa, Camila Brugés, María Camila Arias and Albatrós González also working in the series, which was directed by Alex Garcia Lopex and Laura Mora.[1]

Development on the series begun in March 2019, when it was announced that Netflix had adquired the rights from Rodrigo García and Gonzalo García Barcha, Garcia Marquez sons, who also serve as executive producers.[2] Rivera joined the project by 2020. [3] Further crew members were revealed in October 2022, when production begun on the series.[4] Filming was done in Colombia, the setting of the original novel.The show is expected to debut in 2024.[1]

The one hundred year saga of the seven genenerations of the Buendia family's cyclical struggles with unrequited love, senselss war and madness.

The series will consist of 16 episodes, which were written by José Rivera , Natalia Santa, Camila Brugés, María Camila Arias and Albatrós González and directed by Alex García López and Laura Mora [1]

In March 2019 it was annouced that Netflix had adquired the rights to Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novel One Hundred Years of Solitude from his sons Rodrigo García and Gonzalo García Barcha with the intention of producing a spanish language television adaptaion, with Rodrigo García and Gonzalo García Barcha serving as executive producers.[2] In Decemeber 2020 it was reported that José Rivera would serve as the main writer for the series.[3] By October 2022 Natalia Santa, Camila Brugés and Albatros González had joined the writing team. Pre Production

By October Alex Garcia Lopez and Laura Mora joined as directors for the series, with Eugenio Caballero and Barbara Enriquex serving as production designers, with Netflix partneing with Productora Dynamo in the series. [4]

Casting

In April 2023 it was reported that Claudio Cataño and Susana Morales would lead the series as Aureliano Buendia and Ursula Iguaran respectevly, with Viña Machado and Cristal Aparicio also joining the cast as Pilar Ternera and Remedios Moscote and Jerónimo Barón portraying a Buendia child. [5] In April 2024, with the relase of the first trailer, Cataños', Morales', Machado's and Baron's castings were confirmed, with Baron's character revealed to be a young Aureliano Buendia. In addition several other castings were annouced, with Marco Gonzales portraying Jose Arcadio Buendia, Leonardo Soto portraying Jose Arcadio Jr and Moreno Borja as Melquiades.

Filming

Production on the series begun on Ocotober[4]2022 and filming was underway by April 2023[5], with Garcia Lopez and Mora as directors[4] and Paulo Pérez and Maria Sarasvat serving as cinematographers. [1] Production was done across several regions of Colombia, including La Guajira , Cundinamarca , Magdanela, Cesar and Tolima[1][5], with the latter's capital, Ibagué, serving as the main filming location for Macondo. The show is reportdly the most expensive TV series ever produced in Latinoamerica. [6]

Production Design

In order to represent the passage of time across one hundred years three different versions of Macondo were built in Ibague, with each having different architecture styles and construction materials. Most of the props were made by indigenous groups across Colombia.

Release

The show is expected to release on Netflix in 2024.
