History
[edit]The school was opened in 1870 following the decree of Sultan Abdülaziz by the Catholic Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception of Ivrea.[1]. Initially, the school was established to provide education at the kindergarten and primary school levels for children of Italian families living in Turkey, but later it began to admit Turkish students as well. Originally opened on Kumbaracı Yokuşu, it moved to the current location in 1882.
In 1919 the middle school opened, and the school was renamed to "Özel İtalyan Kız Ortaokulu" (Scuola Media Italiana Femminile). A preparatory year was offered to the Turkish students who did not speak Italian. In 1996, the middle school started co-education and was named "Private Italian Co-educational Middle School". The middle section of the school was gradually closed after the compulsory education was extended from five to eight years.
Since 2000, the school became a high school and changed the name to "Beyoğlu Italian High School". Subsequently, the school received an equivalence certificates with Italian high schools, and at the beginning of the 2005-2006 academic year it started using the current name, "Private Galileo Galilei Italian High School"[2][3].
Education
[edit]The school offers a preparatory year for learning Italian as the language of instruction, and four years of combined Italian Liceo scientifico and MEB curriculums. In the end, the students can choose to take the Italian state examination[4]
Leadership
[edit]Unlike many other schools in Turkey, the leadership in the Liceo Scientifico Galileo Galilei is all-female[5]
