"representative only"
[edit]The templates use this phrase consistently: "The samples shown above are representative only."
What precisely does that mean?
Why is it necessary?

- That's a question probably better asked Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Color. This category is simply used for navigation, and doesn't really have anything to do with the specific phrasing used on the templates. Plus few people read category talk pages. I only saw this because it was a newly created page and I was working new pages patrol. --RL0919 (talk) 02:21, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks. I wasn't expecting a vast readership. More like the 1 or 2 relevant people maintaining a watch on their pet page, that sort of thing.

- I added the sentence to answer some complants at some of the various color pages the color swatches were be taken at face value as being the said color. Problems include that the sRGB color space used by web codes only represents a portion of visible color space, most monitors are not correctly calibrated, many color terms do apply to a range of colors. For example think of green, blue or even something more specific like brick red or strawberry. Very few colors are precisely defined, which is one of the big problems of the info box color. I believe the discussion that resulted in the caveat was one of the pages for brown. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Color is probably a good spot for the question since as RL0919 says probably not many people watch this category. The master template is at Template:Shades of color, and was an attempt to unify and simplify the designs of the pre-existing color templates. I do agree that wording is a bit weaselly so would welcome a better written yet concise replacement. Maybe something a little more verbose like "Color terms are cover a range of shades, hues and tints; the colors shown above are representative of the named colors." after a bit of trimming. - Thanks. I had assumed that the explanation was something along those lines, but are there still people who believe and expect natural colour to map perfectly to computer colour? Who don't realize that computer colour represents a compromise, or a best attempt?
- Yes, we can probably think of a phrase that summarizes the situation a little more cleanly.

Increasing the limit beyond 50 colors per color template
[edit]Is there a way to increase the limit on the colors in each color template? I've added color #51 and did not add to the template. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.69.50.54 (talk) 03:35, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
