Caused by the death on 2 February 1929 of Alderman Walter Harwood (Conservative, elected as an alderman by the council on 9 November 1904).[3][4]

In his place, Councillor Isaac Hinchliffe (Conservative, St. John's, elected 1 November 1910)[5] was elected as an alderman by the council on 6 March 1929.[6]
