Future national multi-events

With the success of the recent Wicnics in different cities, I was thinking that we should pursue more national multi-events, maybe on a quarterly basis (Wikipedia:Meetup/US, anyone?). We already have Wiknic for the summer, and Wikipedia Day in January for the winter. For the fall, perhaps we could do a series of microconferences at public libraries anchored by a shared TedX-like keynote simulcast...--Pharos (talk) 21:38, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

I like the idea of a Library/GLAM multi-events of some sort (Local museums are another option then libraries). It would be really good to have editathons where we could draw in some new people in addition to the experienced editors at these locations and workshop together! Maybe no US meetup in 2012 since it will conflict with Wikimania in Washington D.C. in July. Chicago is centralized and has the capacity to host us. Maybe have two national events in Chicago and San Francisco simultaneously twice a year? Marcus Qwertyus 00:19, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

I kind of prefer a series of smaller local meetups that are more or less simultaneous. The major advantage with that approach is that we can better accommodate our more casual contributors or curious n00bs who might not want to devote the time and money into traveling to another city. - Jredmond (talk) 03:17, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

that page should do a much better job explaining why the first 3 days of ANYTHING are considered "mid". there's a bit of discussion on the Talk page, but it's hardly satisfying.

back in THIS article, i think it should use "start of summer" or "solstice" or something less ambiguous. i cannot imagine many people in the populace writ large know the "real" definition of midsummer. certainly every business up my way uses it to mean LATE JULY or EARLY AUGUST. 66.105.218.38 (talk) 22:10, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

Besides the official definition(s), I would assume that most people center "summer" around SCHOOL VACATIONS. Meaning mid- or late-June to early- or mid-Sept for most of us. How can 23 June be "mid-summer" when school isn't even OUT yet?! 66.105.218.18 (talk) 21:27, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

OK, I hate to ruin the party, but the primary definition of "midsummer" is INDEED, "middle of summer":

About the date

Would people PULLLLEASE stop trying to slip "midsummer" into this article. It is, at best, ambiguous, and at worst, incorrect. Unless the picnic has been moved to August 10th, it is NOT "midsummer".

Also, I changed the phrase "weekend before the 4th of July" to "week or two before..." b/c the example given (23 June) simply DIDN'T MATCH. Was the original description incorrect or was this year's wiknic indeed originally slated for June 30th (the "weekend before")?

To which I must question the line about Turing's Centennial being a "happy coincidence". If the 23rd was chosen instead of the intended 30th, well then, what was the reason? Supermoon 22 and 23 of the Month

This is fun, and it happens to coincide with the so-called Supermoon that we're going to have. Some of the local Wiki editors who frequent Facebook are planning on doing an overnight Wikinic in the Mojave Desert, if anyone is interested.
