Portal:Vancouver

The Vancouver Portal has come a long way and our objective to greatly improve it, and possibly have it become a featured portal is becoming more realistic. The Portal is undergoing a peer view. See Wikipedia:Portal peer_review/Vancouver. Mkdw^talk 05:17, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

'showing support' can mean addressing feedback generated by the process or voting honestly even if you don't believe it to be ready to be featured as part of the process to get it there. Accusations of 'votestacking' is hardly assuming good faith. Bobanny 17:27, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

My intention, and what I thought would be the obvious assumption in the context, was for the readers of this Portal to visit the review, comment (whether it be good or bad), and possibly improve upon the recommendations of said review. I don't truly see how I can force people to vote positively in regards to their own opinion and is completely against the foundation of Wikipedia. Vancouver streets

I have created an article called List of Vancouver roads, in the spirit of what was done with Ottawa and Toronto. It will hopefully be helpful to those who want to complete articles on the major thoroughfares of the city. I gather something similar was done for Burnaby, but of course I can't find it now. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. SkyTrain station article merge

I think it's better to have all of the SkyTrain station articles merged into one list. None of them are notable enough to stand on there own. Many other station articles have in the past, been nominated for deletion. -- Selmo ^(talk) 01:33, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

• Support- That's an excellent idea. I can't imagine any editors getting too excited about working on a single station article, and it would seem that to make any one of them comprehensive enough to warrant a whole article, you'd have to get into describing the number of fare machines and location of the garbage cans. I suggest pulling them all together into a list, which looks to be common practice for other cities, and there are lots of examples to draw on. It could be organized by line, include any distinctive characteristics, location, and a fair number of photos (of which the station articles seem to have an abundance). It would be a more useful complement to the main SkyTrain article than all the separate articles, IMO. I started something similar with Stanley Park to try and build an inventory without having to clutter the article too much. Bobanny 02:15, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

University of British Columbia

I think this article deserves a B or an A — what do you think? Vranak

B at the most. I would personally give it a 'Start" except for the fact that the article is lengthy. The article itself is littered with external links and reads like an advertisement mentioning several non-notable aspects of UBC. Many of the links lead to student run operations. Also there are not nearly enough references and the few that are there are not properly formatted. You may want to try a Wikipedia:Peer Review to gain some more pointers on the article as a whole, and will also be a manditory step before going for a good article review. Vancouver Portal

I would like to take this time to thank everyone who worked on the Portal:Vancouver. We finally made it a featured portal. This featured review is comparable to the one Vancouver underwent and we passed with a 10-1 support/oppose vote. That one oppose vote was especially difficult and I am comforted in the fact that our portal was not the only one having problems with that individual. Direction of WikiProject

These last few months have been busy for all of us. I feel like that after the article Vancouver and the Portal:Vancouver we have not had a chance to all collaborate together since. I've noticed a large increase in the number of Vancouver-related articles, which is great, and it seems like now is good time to discuss the future of this WikiProject and were we'd all like to go with it. I don't think we should be telling our members what their priorities are. We're all doing their own thing. We could take VCTOM more seriously. Everyone is focused on the film articles. Picking a couple of them to improve would be a good idea. I nominate a series of personality articles, i.e. biographies of personages not yet fully written or even started. A while back I proposed Chief Dan George as a COTM, and not just because he's an interesting subject but because he deserves far better than what's on Wikipedia. Prominent names in the cit's history also don't mean politicians and businessmen, although some of those need bios too; Count Hugo von Alvensleben for instance has mostl German nobility information, but pre-Great War he and fellow investors were - allegedly - fronts for the Kaiser's own investments in Vancouver's hot realty and stock markets; hmm needs a redirect but I know I saw a page on him, probably via a Von Alvensleben disambig page?). Arthur Sullivan (not of "Gilbert and"), Hugh Pickett, Dal Richards and others in the city's showbiz industry (Pickett was, among other things, GM of the Orpheum for years, and a major impresario - is there an article on David Y.H. Lui? or for that matter the grocery firm H.Y. Louie - appropriate if there's an article on Malkin's, which I'm not sure of). I'm not meaning to focus on entertainment here; civic and community leaders and just personalities - Sam Greer, who stood off the CPR's plans for industrial docks at what is now Kits Beach, I hope has an article already (he was quite the character, also). Famous quotes on Vancouver is perhaps another subject for a subpage; "A city founded by a bartender can't be all bad" - Jack Leshgold, one of the original Gastown revival entrepreneurs, and Joni Mitchell's "they paved paradise, put up a parking lot", which somewhere it came out (citable perhaps) that it was specifically Vancouver she was talking about; somewhere in Kits, specifically, I think. "Vancouver - it rains there, right?" by some innocent US politician once upon a time, who was of course ridiculed and castigated by the local press Duchovny-style, and so on. So there's some thoughts; I'm history-oriented but obviously there's a lot more modern civic infrastructure and culture and business articles that could use work. Sorry I just noticed above User:Selmo's merge proposal to one list, which I assume was this one. I actually think the articles are, for the most part well-written and relevant. And there's precedent such as the individual station articles linked from: List of London Underground stations and List of New York City Subway stations as well as in Canada: List of Toronto Transit Commission stations. The change has been approved, albeit narrowly and without regard to North American precedent on the matter. Some of the same types now want to merge the subcategory Category:Streets in Vancouver which falls under Category:Streets and squares in Vancouver, which seems plain silly. Lower Mainland-Vancouver Island

I came across this orphaned article. I'm generally more of an inclusionist than deletionist, but besides being a very stubby orphan, I don't buy the premise of the article, that these two places are beginning to form a larger metropolitan area. Can't argue with some of the sentiment in this article. However, I've only heard this type of association made in a vague context or reference to the growth of the respective regions in contemporary literature. Even with population growth perhaps spurring a select few people to call it an urban area, the title of the article implies the entire island and Lower Mainland as being two urban areas, which is preposterous. Yup, all those latte swilling commuters from Holberg to Chilliwack ;)... As it stands, a definite delete.--Keefer4 02:08, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

(original post continues:) I didn't see an article requests section here like on the BC project so am placing this here; this occurred to me while pondering a Kitsilano disambig page, because of the native name Qhahtsahlano-as-Kitsilano, with Kitsilano Beach, Kitsilano High School, and other institutional or infrastructure items. I see the Kitsilano Showboat has a section on the Kitsilano page, but I think there's enough there for that to be its own article; who built it, famous names that have played there, "institutions" that have played there (the Boys Band, but it's notable for all the local dance and theatre groups from within the community); same idea as Malkin Bowl having a page, which I hope it does by now. The Boys Band have a long history and the bio of its founder/leader is interesting, though I've forgotten the details of what I'd heard. There's also the British Columbia Beefeater Band ( originally called the Vancouver Junior Band which was formed in the early 1950's by Gordon Olsen) another major brass-band institution, in a city which once had many, but these were the best (other than HMS Naden, who are still around though a shadow of their one-time marching strength; not sure of the quality of the police brass band these days...think they're more into pipes...). Just outside the GVRD there used to be the St. Mary' Indian Drum and Bugle Corps wich was an amazing show, and there might have been another such unit in Chilliwack; now defunct both of them but once long-time musical institutions, and the pride of the native kids of the time; the sound of massed glockenspeils and cornets is a totally unique experience, makes bagpipes seem tame by comparison and way more fun, too. There's another couple of youth outfits that are notable in Vancouver/regional history; I'll see what I can remember another time; in the meantime:

• New Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra; or is the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra and the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra; there used to be two, something tells me they merged; I'll look into it; this and other regional orchestras in BC (Prince George Symphony Orchestra, Kelowna, Kamloops have their own too, I believe, as also Comox/Courtenay maybe, eg.) should probably get articles, no?
• Vancouver Youth Orchestra - I think that's what it's called, the local branch plant of the National Youth Orchestra (or National Youth Orchestra of Canada as the titlehas to be because the main one is the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain). Either that or an article of Regional Orchestras in British Columbia or List of symphony orchestras in British Columbia maybe, but the list implies separate articles where the not-list title isn't meant to, if not desired. Most are modern inventions so there's not a lot of history there; not so with the Vancouver Philharmonic and the New West Orchestra (as also the Royal City Musical Society), they've been around a long time and have article-weighty stuff behind them, even though they're still amateur orchestras and not funded, or even with full roster, as with the VSO an the CBC orch and other chamber orchs. It's a pity, i.e. that New West - which prides itself on its high-society past - doesn't have an orchestra, or a venue for it, as I'm pretty sure they've had an orchestra for longer than Vancouver has; the VSO used to be the house orchestra in the old Capitol Theatre (Vancouver), in the '20s; but when a formal orchestra was first organized, i.e. not as a pack of sidemen for opera, vaudeville or theatre/dance, I'm not sure; when New West's was in its heyday I'm also not sure, but as with other things to do with the Royal City there's a whole lost time/world and urbane sophistication in New West - almost more like Victoria than Vancouver; the Philharmonic, as its name implies ("love of music"), is a volunteer/amateur orchestra and may not be connected to that history, however.Skookum1 08:07, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

SkyTrain stations

Although I am not a member of WikiProject Vancouver (and have no affliliation with Vancouver), I would like to state a problem universial to all Skytrain station articles.

The section regarding neighbouring stations in all those articles are called "The next station is...". This is very strange. According to WP:HEAD, "heading titles should be nouns or noun phrases". See:

• Lougheed Town Centre Station
• Commercial Drive Station
• New Westminster Station
• Waterfront Station

Just a note that this article has been subject to POV-warring and concerns over biography of living persons issues have come-up. Currently it's protected and being addressed at biography of living persons noticeboard. Photos

I spent part of today shooting a few pictures out at Deas Island, which is one of the areas that are on the requested photos list to flesh out the Commons gallery. So, once I've downloaded and processed them, does anyone know where the best place to put them would be? Are there some up on Commons already I could add these ones to? Schools deletion

You may be interested to know that the AfD gang is going after Richmond elementary schools, and others in BC. People voting for deletion naturally have no connection with Canada. There is currently a process on at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Henry Anderson Elementary School, and several others have been deleted without warning. One of them managed to amend Template:RichmondBCSchools to remove all elementary schools, thus concealing his efforts. Hope you can help. Eclecticology 22:45, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Need help from someone on the ground: Sam Kee Building

Hello! The article for the Sam Kee Building both makes a claim which is dubious (that it is the narrowest commercial building in the world) and provides a statistic which is clearly contradicted by the photo associated with the article. It appears that someone is claiming that at its narrowest the Sam Kee Building is only 4' 11" wide while it appears to be appx. 20' wide in the photo.

Is there anybody on the ground in VC who can (a) clarify the building's claim to fame and (b) clarify the actual stats associated with it and (c) possibly contribute photos that are more informative? Thanks much! --AStanhope 23:13, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I've been by the building many times, and I believe the claim is true. It is deceptive when you see the building, as it's attached to another building. If I get a chance tomorrow I'll drop by and see if I can get an alternate picture.--Bookandcoffee 08:35, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

A five second google search indicates through several sources that it's in the Guiness Book of World Records as the world's narrowest building. At least a couple of the refs seem to be very legitimate and cite-able. Anchoress 08:54, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

He's got Ripley's and Guinness Book stuff posted at the building. I've done a little googling on this before, but some clarification would help, specifically, which part measures 4'11? I propose that WikiProject Vancouver rename itself as WikiProject Metro Vancouver. Why? The use of the name and the flag promote the idea that we're focused just on the city limits. However, the project scope is actually the surrounding region. Switching would also align us with the GVRD which is changing its name to Metro Vancouver. The change would make work-in-Vancouver, live-in-suburb Wikipedians feel more at home and encourage more collaboration on topics in the surrounding area. What do you think? The change would be appropriate, even if the name isn't official yet. (FYI, I've had to move the GVRD article back to its proper name as it was prematurely moved. I don't agree. Let's not pretend that one has to live in *Metro* Vancouver to be a part of this project. I don't live in Vancouver or Metro Vancouver, but I love Vancouver and spend as much time as I can there. Vancouver is great. Now, I like Burnaby... I even hang out in Surrey, Langley and (lord love me) Richmond sometimes. Vancouver is the thing though. It is the centre. A place to go. A state of mind. I also disagree. When you look at a map you see Vancouver. Not Metro Vancouver, not the City of Vancouver & surround areas. When it was the GVRD, nobody really called it that. It was simply a local political term. London is made up of hundreds of 'townships' and the same with many other large cities. Take a look at New York. The 2006 census results are being released in phases. The first release (March 13, 2007) gave population and dwelling counts, the second release (July 17) gave Age and sex cohorts, the third (September 12) gave households, dwelling, and marital characteristics. Proposal for Vancouver Neighbourhood Maps

Articles for Vancouver neighbourhoods all have a neighbourhood map with the neighbourhood in red, for instance Kitsilano uses the image Image:Vancouver_Kitsilano.jpg.

I have developed a very crude template which puts clickable "X"s onto this map. The user can hover over the "X" to see the link to other neighbourhood articles (works especially nicely with popups) and click the "X" to go to the associated article.

I have placed the template at User:Franamax/Test2 and an example of its use at User:Franamax/Test3 (with just four badly placed "X"s).

I propose we use this template for all Vancouver neighbourhood articles. I'd like comments here before fully developing the template, if others feel it won't be useful, I won't go any further. Franamax (talk) 20:21, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

• What would be the point of markable x's on neighbourhood maps; or would these be for specific sites as located within those neighbourhoods. Also, I think in the long run, the simple location maps won't be enough; eventually a street-grid map of just the area; even Kitsilano has subneighbourhoods, some quasi-official like Arbutus Ridge, Alma, West Broadway (meaning beyond Arbutus rather than as the street per se), Kits Point, Point Grey Road (as a neighbourhood) and so on....the boundary shown here is also the official bureaucratized one; to me Kits starts at Fir/Granville, not at Burrard; as with the {{tl:Historical geographic regions of British Columbia}} there's a big difference between traditional areas and conventionalized/officialized ones. Fuzzy boundaries I like better, but make crappier maps unless someone's a reallly good artist ;-) - but I do recommend we find a usable Vancouver street grid that neighbourhood-localized maps can be made, showing parks, buildings/businesses with articles etc.Skookum1 (talk) 01:45, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Well, I think I'll go ahead and see what happens. Maclean, thanks for the examples, given the size of the map I'm working with, I think I'll be stuck just using an "X", but at least it will allow for spatial navigation.

Skookum, the point of the X's is not for intra-neighbourhood navigation, it's more of a "what's around here?" thing, so the user can go to the article of the n-hood next door. You're right that a map of the neighbourhood itself would be nice. However, in order to be legible, it would probably need to be fairly large, thus best off near the bottom. I wouldn't mind having a shot at creating such a map for Kits, if you want, make a section in Talk:Kitsilano with some of the notable streets and features you think should be shown and linked. Structure reevaluation

Hey everyone. It's been awhile since our last major WikiProject collaboration and reorganization. Perhaps now is a good time to do some house cleaning and see if people are up for another challenge.

1. Activity. I recommend an attendance is done on the membership list to see who is currently around and active. I can do this.
2. Plans for a new structure. We should talk about the WikiProject's mandate and what we would like to encompass as well as discuss any changes we'd like to make.
3. Discuss and introduce any other ideas.

The 2010 Olympics are going to be Vancouver's next major event. I'm positive its Wikipedia article will soon be gaining some international attention. I think it would be a great long term collaboration piece. The article could already be quite substantial. We will face a few challenges:

1. The article will not be finished until well after the Olympics.

We will have much to write about in the mean time such as the bid, development plans, affects, pros and cons, protests, major political issues. Plenty to be done and set up for when the time comes.

1. Writers and editors have been criticized in the past on other international-Canadian related articles for showing a bias. We all remember Hollywood North.

I strongly believe in unbiased writing. I think if we make a genuine effort to write the facts we won't have a problem.

1. Finding enough active participants.

There most likely will be enough people interested.

I won't be around, just dropped by about the following section, but just wanted to advise/remind that the 2010 pages are going to have Olympics p.r. and other consultants going over it with a finetooth comb - "information/media management" you can get degrees in now, and they'll be busy; not always as obviously cheesy as some of the edits to Whistler, British Columbia and related articles, but the p.r. machine will get rolling soon. I think in terms of post-Olympics writing it'll be easier because you['ll have editors from outside here helping cover the events/athletes etc. I'd venture "your" first priority is the venues articles...."your" because I live in Halifax for now, despite mucking about in BC and PacNW history/geography articles, and because if I'm in Wiki at all I've already got too much to do.....anyway I'd recommend a tight POV watch...and also "brochure-style/cheesiness" watch...and be careful with their friggin' logo copyrights ;-).Skookum1 (talk) 14:19, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

I was just tidying up senakw a bit and disco vered Vanier Park doesn't yet have an article. Not even a stub....I'd guess or hope that the Planetarium/Museum, VancConservatory of Music, Van Archives, Coast Guard station and Maritime Museum would have their own entries; just surprised me but I see there's not that many articles at all in Category:Parks in Vancouver so I guess Vanier's just one among many unwritten; it's just kinda high-profile, given its location and all, and the features in it....(and waht it was, i.e. senakw)Skookum1 (talk) 14:19, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Vancouver International Airport and Vancouver International Water Airport

I think these could do with a bit of clarification. I was looking at Vancouver International Airport#South terminal and noticed that several of the operators are float planes but it's not stated in the article and probabably should be. Then at the water airport it says planes can be transferred to the land airport. So can float planes land at both airports and/or does the south terminal serve both airports? Willingdon Secondary School is a weird article. As far as I know, it's not a public school; it's some kind of youth custody centre across from BCIT. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Delete or rename Koreatown, Vancouver

I just happened to find this article in the "West End" section of the {{VancouverNeighbourhoods}} template and was shocked by its contents; this is a fictional, promotional neighbourhood, a usage not used by anyone but Korean promoters/ethnic loyalists, as part of hte quest to create a Koreatown. See Talk:Koreatown, Vancouver as to why this needs a speedy delete; a retitling to Koreatown, Coquitlam I could almost deal with but it's not a usage that non-Korean residents or busiensses in that area see themselves as. I say delete it, or at least trim its promotional/fictional contents. It's bunk.Skookum1 (talk) 13:58, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

I agree. There is an apparent, obvious presence of Korean investment along parts of Robson street, but that in itself does not create a "Koreatown" in Vancouver. Koreans do not make up the majority of the business (not even close!), Korean settlement is virtually non-existent, and there is nothing resembling a Korean cultural environment. Some of this article might be incorporated in an article on "Koreans in Metro Vancouver"- or something like that- but otherwise the suggestion of a distinct Koratown is entirely fictional. 24 hours yet, or just go ahead and add the "delete" tag? I don't see a reason, also, why "Koreans in Greater Vancouver" has any merit as an encylopedia article, certainly not "ahead of" many more signfiicant, historical ethnic communities, e.g. the Dutch and Mennonites. "Koreatown" also, btw, was the proposed name, IIRC, of the stripmall in Surrey where the Korean owners tried to evict all the non-Korean owners. Mind you, I also have problems with calling anything but Chinatown "Chinatown", which in wiki has come to mean anywhere with a concentration of Chinese-only businesses/social life, i.e. newly-minted Chiense commercial areas are not Chinatowns, no more than the Douglas Road corridor is "Norwaytown" or Ballard in Seattle is "Swedish town". Not that hard to compile, would give motivation for article-creation; there's surprisingly few in Category:Parks in Vancouver, given the scale of the parks system. AFD on Koreatown, Vancouver

The AFD has begun on this, posting a notice here so we have actual Vancouverites taking part in the AFD. I haven't my responses to the "keep" votes yet but will do so later today; essentially the cites provided by one comment are "circular" - sites which have copied Wiki-based content mentioning this non-existent place, or the site about the two (and two only) businesses which are pushing the branding of Haro & Denman as "Koreatown" (which explains the African, French, Montreal Fried Chicken place; the article actually says the lower part of Robson, which has as many (if not more) Japanese eateries. If there is a Koreatown in Greater Vancouver, it's North Road, not anywhere near the West End.....delete, delete, delete, but it's going to take one of those "proof that something doesn't exist" rationales, because of the gullibility and/or lack of local knowledge of various admins/editors. The creation of neologistic geography in Wiki articles has produced a somewhat large problem - that the other sites like nationmaster and answers.com which mirror Wiki content propagate material/names that aren't actually real, to the point where they're so prevalent on-line that other people think they're valid cites. "Making original research true" by Goebbel's method - "make a lie big enough and loud enough and repeat it often enough, and people will come to believe it." The same method has been used - and I do mean used - by the propagators of terms like Salish Sea.....Skookum1 (talk) 15:00, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Also to comment that the same circular-citations abound for Greektown, Vancouver, which I also have my doubts about its validity; Yes, there's a Bank of Greece at Mackenzie & B'way and "more than the usual concentration of Greek restaurants" (sort of, as there's a hell of a lot of Greek restaurants throughout Greater Vancouver), but the term "Greektown" is not something that residents of that area would identify with; Greek Days yes, and the fact that West Broadway is the closest thing to a Greek cultural enclave - but "Greektown" seems entirely invented/wishful thinking; though at least more substance than Koreatown......if the logic used for Greektown, or even the definition of Chinatown provided on that article, were applied to other groups, then the Douglas Road corridor in Burnaby, from the Scandinavian Community Centre on Sprott through the various ethnic retirement homes along Douglas Road, and a high rate of residency in that area of Canadians of Scandinavian descent, would qualify somethiing like "Nordictown". The Polish Community Hall on Fraser would make "Polishtown" and so on......Central Lonsdale could be "Farsitown" etc......Skookum1 (talk) 15:38, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Photo request - Consulate-General of Japan in Vancouver

If one wants, try photographing the Consulate-General of Japan in Vancouver. It is at 800-1177 West Hastings Street. If the consulate has its own building or has markings on the outside, photograph the markings and post them on Diplomatic missions of Japan. If the building is in an office suite and only has its markings in the inside, try going into the facility and photographing the markers of the consulate. Be very careful when photographing diplomatic missions; if the mission is inside of a larger complex, you may need to ask for permission before taking the photograph. CPR Townsite

This article has been "in need" for a while, mostly on historical contexts as it relates to a nubmer of things - the Great Fire especially, also the development of uptown as a way for the CPR to monopolize/redirect development from the old downtown (Gastown), and also because lke the West End and Granville, BI (Gastown townsite) it was one of the main land divisions of the early city; it corresponds rougly to the combination of Granville Mall, Downtown South and Yaletown today; boundaries are Hamilton and Hastings to Burrard, and everything between Hamilton and Burrard to the False Creek waterfront...shows on all old maps of the early city.Skookum1 (talk) 15:51, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Bayshore Inn

This very notable hotel is conspicuous by its absence, especially considering hotels that aren't even finished yet have articles.....I don't ahve the resources and am not in Vancouver to photograph it; it was part of the CP chain when it was built, or rather became part of it while it was being built as I think teher were some "problems" with the initial investors and their ties to the Tom Campbell-era City Hall....for many years one of the handful of five-star hotels in the city, ranked with the Georgia and Hotel Van long before any of the new roster of hotels were built, and historically significant as the setting for the all-night party hosted for the Vander Zalms by Tan Yu and reported by Faye Leung, and also for being where Howard Hughes holed up for two years.....Skookum1 (talk) 15:57, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Another hotel of note, though of a completely different rating, is teh Wild Duck Inn, whatever it's called now, by the Pitt River Bridge...also the Moody Arms and the like; the old beer-parlour "circuit" before neighbourhood pubs were invented; the Wild Duck and Moody Arms are very old and hoary though; the Wild Duck came up just now in ref to Alvin, British Columbia at hte head of Pitt Lake, see my talkpage if you;'re interested at all. I just made Chehalis Lake and it brought to mind the number of other significant lakes in the Lower Mainland in need of doing; not just in the GVRD, and as a by-the-way I wanted to suggest that Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley-related debates might as well be here, given the interconnectivity and common geography. That aside, here's a list of all lakes I can think of some will overlap with regional or generally provincial park articles, i.e .there may not be a need for separate articles; in cases like Cults Lake I t hink the cmomunity/park shoudl be bfoken off from the physical lake "but" that's not the point here. I'm not sure whether this shoudl be a list, or should be acategory as well - Category:Lakes of British Columbia is going to be huge; in my view it shoudl be broken up by the "traditional countries" - Cariboo, Shusawp, Kootenays etc rather tahn ever using RDs; "if you insist" Category:Lakes in Metro Vancouver could exist as a subcat of Category:Lakes of the Lower mainland, but I think the latter one makes more sense, and will make more sense to readers of the various apges; if they're fgrom BC at least, and if not then they'll learn how BC is "arranged". Removing "The next station is..."

Does anyone think that "The next station is..." in pages such as Metrotown Station should be deleted? If you look at London Underground station's articles, e.g. Lambeth North tube station, they don't have such headings. I think we can request bots from Wikipedia:Bot requests to clean it up.

Portal:Vancouver

The portal has been changed to update content automatically for articles, pictures, panoramas quotes, and biographies, so there are no more red wikilinked box sections on the portal. The pictures, biographies, and articles can still be nominated if they are B class or less. FA, A and GA class can be addd automatically into the portal without nomination, IMHO The old format produced the occasional lapse in nominated showcase month articles and images, this new format keeps the portal full, even if editors are busy.

• However....
  • Previously nominated biography Sam Sullivan was not re-added as the article has only a one sentence lead, and I do not know what was put on the portal last time around. Can someone familiar with this bio fix the lead to introduce all sections of a fairly lengthy article? Then the article could be re-added to the portal if so desired.
  • Prviously nominated article Vancouver Canucks was not re-added at this time as the article has a tag which has rated the article as having multiple issues. Is there anyone familiar with this content who could address the tag so the article can plop into the portal if so desired.
  • Previously nominated article Science World at TELUS World of Science was added to the portal as it had been a prior showcase article, however this article is still at start class.
  • Images were all re-added as there are not any featured, quality or valued images of Vancouver that I could find on wikimedia commons or on wikipedia en featured images. The one FA panorama was added in its very own box section though.  :-)

Oh, no I didn't - I went by what was on Collingwood (dab) which didn't mention Vancouver or other Collingwood placenames in BC.....to me though it's like Grandview-Woodlands..."Grandview" is a distinct area, in teh same way that Boundary Country is distinct from Boundary-Similkameen, which incldues the Similkameen Country as well as the South Okanagan (from Oliver south anyway...). I'm not in Vancouver anymore - I live in Halifax now and was just trying to flil in what I thought was a "blank"- and don't have any resources on hand, or even the abllity to go down and snap some pics; I was waiting to think about the redirect - y'see unofficial neighbourhoods do have a place, if they're citable; as the article noted the area was born as an outgrowth of BCER service, and while I've historically thought of it as "Joyce" or "Joyce & Kingsway" or even "Joyce Loop", it's as distinct an area as Gastown is within the Downtown Eastside or Granville island is within Fairview; I hope you didn't just "wipe" th article but incorporated the bits about the rail line, the name etc into it; a "merge' is more what I was thinking once you mentioned Renfrew-Collingwood....I have my doubts about the validity of the city's agglomerative "official" neighbourhoods, as mentioned above. "The Drive" is distinct iwthin Grandview-Woodlands, for example, and Stanley Park Neighbourhood is an identifiable and distinct area within the West End, as is Davie Village. The information I added was in need of detailing and fixing anyway, and I'm not "on-site" and with access to Vancouver resources; also look at my edit contributions and you'll see how busy-all-over-the-map I am. Also to suggest that sections be delineated within the Renfrew-Collingwood article for its distinct neighbourhoods/areas. Collingwood is a distinct area from Grandview Highway and both are distinct from what's north of Grandview, and so on; that's among the reasons I deferred from doing the merge; you'll note I made a few changes to the Renfrew-Collingwood article to address the point that this is not a natural neighbourhood but an official city "neighbourhood zone", whatever the proper term is, and is actually a collection of neighbourhoods; there's a specific name btw for the area north of the north end of Joyce, which was a veterans' housing development, and similarly there's a name for the housing development just north of the Lougheed-Broadway connector (where the apartment fire/murder killed that Congolese family a few years ago); major industries in the area like Vancouver Film Studios and (formerly) Wire Rope Industries (now the Superstore) and Pine Tree Nut etc. The problem with the official city neighbourhoods is that they're macro-regions and override local distinctiveness (one of the complaints made against them when they were instigated by the way); it's not like Collingwood/Joyce is the same neighbourhood in the usual sense as the Grandview corridor, or the area north of Lougheed...Skookum1 (talk) 14:47, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Add Fraser river bridges to Category:Bridges by river?

Just putting an idea out there. I noticed there's a category called Category:Bridges by river and we have Category:Bridges in Vancouver as well as List of crossings of the Fraser River, and also Template:Bridges of Metro Vancouver.

Any interest in incorporating material from the category, list, and template into a new category called Category:Bridges over the Fraser River? Or perhaps the list is enough? I know that Skookum will have issues over the specifics of the various arms and tributaries of the Fraser river and such but we I'm sure we can work things out. ;) -- OlEnglish ^(Talk) 21:58, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

I won't have issues with the North Arm/Middle Arm/South Arm but there is the point that some of the entries on List of crossings of the Fraser River are not bridges, but ferries (these are fewer and fewer but historically there were many - and some are missing like the old Brownsville Ferry at New West). And I haven't thought to look - is the old Fraser Street Bridge listed? And before the existence of the Knight Street Bridge there used to be a local bridge from Vancouver to Mitchell Island. The little bridge between MacMillan Island and Fort Langley might qualify, although that's a slough/sidewater bridge and not part of the main arms/reaches; there are others like that farther up but the sloughs around Nicomen and Chilliwack/Rosedale etc are not usually considered part of the main Fraser; there used to be the Agassiz-Rosedale Ferry and other gold rush-era ones at Yale and Spuzzum.Skookum1 (talk) 14:19, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

And I'm not sure there's much point to List of crossings of the Thompson River....I actually haven't stopped to count them; there's the CNR and highway bridges at Lytton, the highway bridge, old bridge and old ferry ("Cook's Ferry") at Spences Bridge, the Ashcroft Bridge, the Savona Bridge (and an old ferry there as well), and the two/three bridges around Kamloops, the Little Fort Ferry, not sure up the North Thompson from there, and the Sorrento Bridge (though that's over the Little River, not the South Thompson and other bridges from Clearwater up). There's only four crossings of the Bridge River, two of them over dams, plus a vanished ferry, and only a handful over the Nechako, not sure about the Endako, plus a few over the Quesnel... I added the coords for the Fraser Street Bridge, which it turns out was evidently the access to Mitchell Island though I don't remember the off-ramp and/or if there were actually two bridges, one over the slough/sidereach north of the island ("Ship Channel". BC Geographical Names.) or if it was all one bridge. What happened to The Cave (nightclub)??

I just found a cite for "The Cave" but now can't find its article; it's not on either The Cave or Cave (disambibguation). I suppose it may have been deleted because of a notability tag, or an unref tag, but:

July 20 A fixture on the Vancouver club scene for decades was The Cave, whose dark interior and famous papier-mache stalactites were a setting for acts ranging from Mitzi Gaynor, Milton Berle, Mel Torme, Lena Horne, Jack Carter, Henny Youngman and Louis Armstrong to Eric Burdon and the Animals and The Doors. The Cave, run in its heyday by the towering Ken Stauffer, closed its doors today with a farewell performance by the Bobby Hales Orchestra. The club was demolished the next day. Actually, the demolition started early: “Before the day dawned,” Joy Metcalfe wrote, “every mirror, stalactite, showcase, sink and toilet that had not been auctioned off earlier had been demolished by the mob.”

Notability tag added, and real estate promo material an associated link removed, also dead canada.com/vancouvercourier link removed. I've lived in this area and never hard the name; maybe those with school-age chidleren have started referring to it that way; to met it's Grandview (I've lived at 15th & Prince Albert and on 13th between Clark and Glen......while I think there are some bona fide neighbourhoods with common names that need articles or sections in other articles (e.g. Kits Point, Spanish Banks, Point Grey Road, Alma, West 10th etc), this ain't one of them; "school neighbourhoods", i.e. those defined by school "territory"/reach" like this one I'm not so sure are notable in any way.....Skookum1 (talk) 14:41, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

I've also never heard of it. Literary Storefront

I came across this memoir of the Literary Storefront while looking up an old friend, poet/publisher Wayne Holder, who briefly ran the place in the early '80s, though it was founded by Mona Fertig. Things are likely to get busy(er) around here quite soon as everyone in the world vies to tell everyone else that "my firend Alison is teh coolest!". Ugh, pre-emptive protection? Other than being completely antithetical to the goals of "the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit", I guess it's OK. :) I personally won't feel any problems with +sprot'ing anything that becomes a problem, RFPP or not. (I do have distinct views on whether the modern Olympic movement is good or not, but not so much that I would hate the articles) What I'm thinking of is a sub-page here where we could collect all the various titles that may be, or are becoming, at risk. Recent changes filtered for mainspace would give me a good comprehensive look at the action at any given moment. It can be used along with other Canada projects, for example {{{{WikiProject Canada |vancouver=yes |music=yes |nl=yes | class=start |importance=low}} for a band that moved from Newfoundland to Vancouver. Straw poll

Hi, WikiProject Vancouver. I'd like to do a straw poll to see if and how you would like to allow tagging of your articles using a merged template. The Canada template is kind of a top-level catchall template that allows all Canadian WikiProjects to be added to talk pages at once with a standardized setup.

If the option is allowed, it would let users add articles to both this project and WikiProject Canada using {{WikiProject Canada |Vancouver=yes}}. This is also how articles from projects like Canada Sports and Canada Roads are done, so you would be able to add articles to multiple projects using something like {{WikiProject Canada |vancouver=yes |music=yes}}.

The projects would share a class rating, but WPVancouver would have it's own importance rating using |vancouver-importance=. Optionally, it could be set to default to WPCanada's importance if there is no Vancouver importance and put the article into the additional category Category:Vancouver articles with inherited importance. It would also show the Vancouver portal on the template, though we're still looking into exactly how that would look.

My questions to you are:

1. Do you want to allow users the option of tagging WPVancouver articles using the WPCanada template?
2. If it is allowed, would you want it to default to the WPCanada importance rating when there is no Vancouver importance rating (assuming that you can track which articles have inherited importance)?

rating of "Burrard Bridge" article

1) I would like to know why the neutrality of the "Burrard Bridge" article is now contested. I, not a Vancouverite, am principal editor of it, who reshaped what was there, clarifying the engineering, historical, and site information (inserting illustrative photogaphs). I also separated and put in chronological order reports on ongoing developments regarding the bicycle lane issue. I'm happy to see that subsequent contributions to that history have followed the format. I visit it from time to time to make sure that notes added are all *documented* with links to independent press, civic and other public sources. Contents of these will disagree among themselves and vary in accuracy, neutrality, relevance. Such is the nature of public discussion. That way the article serves as an updated history of a public planning situation of a kind that occurs in many countries, also as a good Wiki source for those who want information about current developments there. Query: therefore, what in the *editing of this article* is considered non-neutral?

(I also deleted vanitas photos, leaving those in text that are illustrative of the text. Thus the old complaint about that on the Discussion page is out of date.)

2) Why does it have a "Low Importance" ranking? What would the Project require of an article on this Bridge, demonstrably important to Vancouver in many ways, to give it a better ranking? Alethe (talk)

Vancouver Deaflympics

We don't seem to have an articles for the 2015 Winter Deaflympics (Vancouver Deaflympics/2015 Deaflympics) ...

There does exist an article for a specific Deaflympics, 2009 Deaflympics, so perhaps with the Canadian Olympics of Whistler going on now, we should also articlize this event? (The Deaflympics are sanctioned by the IOC)

Point Grey

This is currently a redirect to West Point Grey and it shouldn't be; its source-use is the physical point, where Wreck Beach is, but to my surprise BCGNIS has only Point Grey Beach, which has me wondering exactly where that is. But "Point Grey" is also in common use for at least on electoral riding, and also for a well-known school, and isn't just West Point Grey, i.e. insofar as within the City of Vancouver goes; the physical Point Grey of course isn't, although that usage was also generally applied to hte whole headland approaching Point Grey - which indeed why West 10th and the area north of it are caleld Point Grey; the "West" was added because the Alma-Jericho area was also part of Point Grey....and then there was Point Grey (municipality) wasn't there? Also NB South Vancouver (city) needs making.....cites from local atlases and book on teh point and other uses are needed to make that redirect into a proper article and if it's not a disambig then Point Grey (disambiguation) seems called for.Skookum1 (talk) 09:29, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

Missing from the mention of the Spanish and George Vancouver is the rendezvous off Point Grey, and how Spanish Banks got its name; this is iconic in Vancouver history - and isn't it one of the murals in the Ledge? Vancouver Canucks (WHL)

Is the Vancouver Canucks (WHL) the predecessor of the Vancouver Canucks (NHL) ? the WHL team stopped playing in 1970, when the NHL team was formed. Hyphenated placenames are hyphenated NOT "dashed"

I've reversed User:arctic.gnomes hyphen->dash changes to the {{VancouverNeighbourhoods}} template, but can't seem to get to be able to "revert" the titles of the various neighbourhood articles that have been affected by the misapplication of ENDASH, wholesale, across too much of Wikipedia, by non-RM mandated moves, supposedly "uncontroversial" when really they are, very much so. Arctic.gnome's stated rationale was that when a hyphen usage infers "and" or "to" then the endash should be substituted, but these aren't "and/to" situations, and a key section of ENDASH which nobody seemed to carry out or respect, though giving Bible-writ weight to other sections, and committing mass executions of hyphens by the thousands, all unwarranted, is that hyphenated names are to remain hyphenated; that passage has been amended to specify placenames, but it was already the intent of user:Ozob who authored the section that all hyphenated placenames are meant. And these are not usages as in "Grandview and Woodland" or "Hastings and Sunrise" or "Renfrew and Collingwood", not in the slightest; these neighbourhood names are derived from school-names, e.g. Hastings Park and Sunrise Elementaries; "Woodland" is not even a neighbourhood so how can it be "and" to anything?? These are just names concocted by the city for the offically-mandated neighbourhoods, they are not "Renfrew neighbourhood and Collingwood neighbourhood" in origin. As many know, I have a similar bitch about the hyphenization of regional district names, but will post about that separately; all these were moved without RMs and without discussion by this WikiProject or anywhere else in WP:CAnada, and the mis-citing of DASH has become nearly a religion and it's got to stop, and its damage reversed....all "dashed items" in Category:Neighbourhoods in Vancouver should be moved back forthwith; if someone insists they should be "dashed", let them launch an RM instead of me having to fix something taht never should have been broken....Skookum1 (talk) 19:55, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

You need to get an admin to delete the redirects so you can move the page back to the hyphenated titles. You can use Template:Db-move for this, but I strongly suggest talking to arctic.gnome about it first. -- œ^™ 21:28, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

I tried, no answer yet....according to what I've been told, if they were speedied without an RM, the proper procedure is to move them back and, and only then, should the dashes have been proposed by RM. "Vancouverism"

to me this term means a local expression, or sentiment/attitude/peculiarity, it doesn't mean an architectural/planning style-label about how great a place the West End is.....There's no book on "Vancouverisms" (i.e. about the culture/verbal context of the place) but kinda makes me wish there were so there'd be a reason to dab this obscure and not-slightly promotional usage (promoting a planning agenda, and certain firms) to Vancouverism (urban planning).Skookum1 (talk) 09:37, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

These discussions may shed some light: Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2006_December_31#Category:Miscellaneous_Vancouver_categories and Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2006_October_21#Category:Miscellaneous_Vancouver_articles. Apparantely the category is used to keep track of talk pages that have not yet been sorted into a category for a specific adjacent city. Although that was from back in 2006 and I'm unsure if this is still the case..
