La Plagne

Hi WP:SKI-ers. Can I get you to intervene in a little debate (part in English part in French) between User talk:RomGuig and myself about the inclusion of an infobox in the La Plagne article. Other European ski resorts don't have an infobox, but it seems most of Wikipedia's better articles have the boxes included. Dry surfaces

Not technically a winter sport, as they're used when there's no snow around, and I don't know how prevalent they are in countries other than the UK, but I think they are large enough to warrant acknowledging on Wikipedia. About 75% (unverified estimate) of British competitions take place on surfaces other than snow, but could still reasonably be classified under snowsport/winter sports given that they still involve all the same events, equipment and techniques. Definitely part of WP:SKI; its an emulation of a winter sport. The snow domes in the middle east count as winter sports venues; there was even a FIS Europa-cup race at an indoor facility in Belgium (I think). User:RideABicycle/Signature 00:08, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Including non-snow surfaces creats difficulty in distinguising between skiing and skating. Nordic ski boots and bindings are used with some types of iceskates, and the difference between a x-c roller-ski and an in-line skate is in only in the boot/binding setup. Skiing and skating are somewhat related; one can skate on skis (even alpine skis). It is important to remember that cross country skiing is part of WP:SKI. Also, we must remember that roller-skis are of a different construction than inline skates, and one uses poles for the former. We don't need to define the differences between skiing and skating; they are quite clear. We just need to keep in mind what sport an articles' subject is used for/related to. SL/GS/SG/DH?

I've noticed the example template for skier bios uses these abbreviations. Before they're mass-added to all bios, can I suggest that instead we use the full names Slalom / Giant Slalom / Super-G / Downhill. I don't think that this would overflow the column and cause visual style issues, and would be considerably easier to read (especially for readers who are not as familiar with racing as us). -- HazardousWaster 10:26, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Would Like to join Project Ski

Just recently I had created the Gore Mountain article and I actually like making articles of that sort, I ski at a wide variety of places in the Northeastern US and I also enjoy photography (I like taking pictures of every mountain I go to). I wont be doing much picture taking over the coming months, but I would like to join your project and inlude a few of my pictures and or knowledge about ski resorts and topics. • I'm definitely interested in joining this project. I know a lot about the ski areas in the Pacific Northwest since I ski there all the time. I could also help with some resorts in BC and other scattered locations across the Western US. I am also a big fan of the FIS Alpine World Cup. Page Rating System/Revised project notice box

I've noticed many WikiProjects have a rating system for pages. We could do the same via a new WikiProject banner (the one we put at the top of talk pages) with a rating mechanism built in. It would place all rated articles in a corresponding category, which would allow easier division of labor within the WikiProject. A maintained Article counter box on the WikiProject page could tabulate all WP:SKI articles by rating as well, as a way to track our progress. The rating should be done following a set guidelines available on WP:SKI, and its rationale recorded on the article's talk page. Not too coincidentally, I have put together a Banner we could use. It is viewable at User:RideABicycle/test/Sandbox/Ski-Template and its instructions for use can be found at User talk:RideABicycle/test/Sandbox/Ski-Template. We might consider using Wikipedia:WikiProject Aircraft/Assessment as the basis for our own Assessment system. User:RideABicycle/Signature 00:35, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Don't forget about nordic skiing

Just to remind you all not to forget about Nordic skiing, including the disciplines af cross country skiing, ski jumping, and Nordic combined. Three of the eleven events that have been in every Winter Olympics come from this skiing discipline: men's ski jumping individual large hill, men's 50 km cross country skiing, and men's Nordic combined 18 km/ 15 km individual Gundersen. The articles are complete both in their respective sections at the Winter Olympics and at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships if you are interested in looking at them. Comments, suggestions

I think the pages DO need a table of difficulty as proposed earlier. Also, the infobox - how about adding NASTAR? Most hills offer it, and it's a big draw for those that do. Also, does Skicross deserve something somewhere? Perhaps an infobox of the type of skiing available: xcountry, DH, Terrain, Snowboard (as you know, some hills still ban it), Skicross, Tree Skiing, etc. A way of summing up the hill at a glance.

Hi guys,

What about adding a true vertical field to the info box. I have already implemented this on the Berkshire East page but I have reached resistance from an ex employee who keeps undoing my changes. I think this fair and accurate (and citable via USGS quads). Advertised vertical is almost universally wrong and true vertical should be included for an accurate and honest assessment of the ski area.
