Spanish names

Hi there. I was editing the article on Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez and was wondering if there is any convention on the spelling of that surname in the English Wikipedia. I have a CD of another Pete Rodriguez for whom I intend on starting an article, and in the inserts the Spanish version spells it Rodríguez and the English just Rodriguez. The article I linked currently uses both so I thought I ought to establish which one should be used when. BigBlueFish (talk) 21:37, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Rodriguez is a common name both in Spanish and in English. WP:MOS suggests we use titles without diacritics wherever practical, but it is not required to do so. Some users like to be faithful to the original Spanish name, but it is not necessary since the pronunciation in both Spanish and English is the same, or at least very similar. However, some Spanish names may be spelled with diacritics since it may have different pronunciations in Spanish, English, or both, such as Mayagüez. - Mtmelendez ^(Talk) 22:38, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

It is based on what is used, on what the person is known by in English. The spelling is the property of an individual person (or place, whatever), not of a surname. Gene Nygaard (talk) 23:49, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
