MalaysiaKini

I'm probably not the only one but I now have a subscription to MalaysiaKini (but not the archives) so if anyone wants me to verify details in a recent article from there, drop a message on my talk page. Incidentally, Wikipedia:Verifiability does not forbid the use of subscription based sources (I've seen this claim before). I guess because few contributors have access, we probably don't make enough use of MalaysiaKini which is unfortunate since it provides an alternative POV to what appears in most of the government linked media and there is limited coverage of some issues outside of Malaysia (meaning no foreign sources). I don't know whether there's ever been any discussion but MalaysiaKini would IMHO meet the definition of Wikipedia:Reliable sources in most instances. BTW, do remember that foreign language sources are acceptable if there are no alternatives. So if something is covered in the Chinese media or Malay media then you're welcome to use those as sources. Apart from Malaysia Kini, the Malaysia Today is also another source. Malaysia Today news sometimes violates NPOV, however, Malaysia Today has stories that do not covered by printed media. For example the PKFZ story.Jannisri (talk) 13:39, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Citing Malaysia Today should nominally be for a "as it was reported" basis, or if the writings in the articles are also verifiable with other news sources (independent or government-owned). Standisation of collaboration template

I have to object to part thereof of Kawaputra's indiscriminate reversion at the collab page. It's fair enough if minor changes such as the use of the hash and auto dates on the header are unnecessary, but I for one would prefer at least an additional section for comments, seeing some of our earlier nominations had them. From my experience with other collabs, templates provided for new nominations have space for at least support votes and accompanying comments. What we currently have is a system that apparently requires only votes with no allocated space for actual comments. The layout also implies a dumbed down system that favours numbers of votes instead of solid justifications and consensus. This has resulted in nominations that simply consist of bare votes winning over nominations that are accompanied by helpful explanations as to why the article in question merits a collab (see Malaysian Airlines over Kampar, Perak and Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party for example). - Two hundred percent (talk) 06:38, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, Im not sure how else we can decide which article gets chosen for the collaboration other than by looking at which article which gets the most votes. Looking at the merits provided by the nominators can lead to uncertainty. I dunno, what others think? ќמшמφטтгמ^torque 11:06, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

I know participants of this project in general tend to lack critical thinking, but that's not a good excuse to not improve the system. Plenty of collab projects in Wikipedia and WP:AFD rely on consensus rather than vote counts; so having a seperate comment section is a minimum must for fair selection. Besides, a system where one picks nominated articles based on the number of vote is fundamentally flawed due also to sockpuppets. - Two hundred percent (talk) 10:54, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

There's a valid dispute about whether it constitutes an actual form of discrimination. I'm uncomfortable with the way ketuanan Melayu itself is presented on {{Discrimination sidebar}} since I don't think it's really a legal form of discrimination per se. Kadet Remaja Sekolah Malaysia‎ -- appeal for assistance

Greetings. User:Keropi88 created this article a couple of weeks ago, but has failed to add substantial content to it. The KRSM page was created during the AfD discussion for another article on a branch of the organization, Sinar Bintang School Cadet Corps (SBKRS), by the same author. The branch article did not survive AfD, but the history was retained so that it could be used as a basis for material on the national organization.

I hope that someone from here at WP:MY can add some material to the article, as the organization is clearly notable. But if it remains in its current mostly-empty state, I will recommend that it be deleted per WP:CSD#A3. Thank you for your time. --Finngall ^talk 21:24, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Proposal to rename "Pedra Branca dispute"

Use of honorifics - Don't

As per WP:NAMES, I would like folks who are updating or adding new articles to not use honorifics (ie. Datuk, Tan Sri, etc) as part of the names of individuals -

"Wikipedia guidelines permit inline use of titles but forbid inline use of honorifics .. absence of an honorific title from inline usage does not and should not imply that the person does not hold a particular title that is associated with that (absent) honorific title - the infobox is the canonical location for all titles and honors."

I assume that we know that its not just Malaysians who are reading Wikipedia. Adding a Tan Sri in front of a person's name would just give a lot of folks that Tan is part of the person's name. Cheers. - Bob K 03:24, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Naming conventions for institutions with no established English translations

I have been doing full edits of the articles of our universities and other higher education related articles and have been using the commonly used Malay names for the public universities. Generally I based my naming convention on how the Ministry of Higher Education lists them in their English language website, except for those which do have common and established English translation of their names like University of Malaya for Universiti Malaya. One reason I did so was due to the haphazard way in which some of the translated names were rendered, eg. Universiti Putra Malaysia was mistranslated as University of Putra rather than Putra University. I understand this might be problematic in view of WP:NC(UE) but there are exceptions provided for (re: WP:NC(UE) - No established usage). I'd like to solicit some feedback and views on this and whether or not we can come out with a consistent policy about this on this Style Manual. Personally I'd still be partial to using an English translation but there should be some consensus achieved on how the names of institutions with no established English versions of their name are translated first before the articles are published. There are way too many articles related to Malaysia that are written in "English" with local language syntax and grammatical rules, eg. I'm pretty certain I saw the word prestasi mistranslated in one article as prestation quite a while back. - Bob K 14:01, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

I wouldn't mind it being in it's english form, but I concur about the haphazard way some of the universities got renamed. It's appalling. I'd move them back to their original names but the worst thing I could possibly do is do a cut and paste move or have to come up against an admin that's gonna cite WP:NC(UE) for keeping it there. If Malay names have never been given any English equivalents, there isn't any point beyond literal translation, especially with those of names that clearly consists of words similar in both English and Malay (i.e. university names). - Two hundred percent (talk) 07:09, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

You may also want to disregard local but unusual interpretations of English in Malaysia and stick to British English when working on Malaysian articles. Our education system has done wonders regressing the standards of English for 40 years. - Two hundred percent (talk) 07:17, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

KL transport, Malaysian roads and template abuse

Use of templates to color every instance of the string {{KL-RTS-KEL}} in purple, like this, is really bleeping annoying and violates WP:TMP: Templates should not masquerade as article content in the main article namespace; instead, place the text directly into the article.

And yes, this has already spread like a cancer through Malaysian transport and road articles. It's time to kill them. Jpatokal (talk) 09:46, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

I would advise some caution about which ones to list, since the Template:KL-RTS route/station templates used in the routemap/station infoboxes are still (IMHO) justifiable. The body text ones (KL-RTS-xxx) should be nuked, but they should first be stripped out from the other templates using them. Jpatokal (talk) 16:34, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Proposal to rename "Middle Rocks, Malaysia"

I have proposed that the article "Middle Rocks, Johor" be renamed to "Middle Rocks". I feel that adding "Johor" to the article name is unnecessary as there is no other article named "Middle Rocks", nor does there appear to be such a place anywhere else in the world. WikiProjek Malaysia members are invited to join the the community and other Wikipedians in the Annex, Centrel Market from 16-26 Oct to contribute regarding the first Malayan Emergency from 1948-1960.

Throughout the duration of the project, students, journalists (writers from The Nutgraph & The Star have confirmed), and others will take 1-hour shifts from 11am to 4pm daily to input materials related to the Emergency years. The participants will collectively grow the entries related to Malaya-Malaysia from 1948 to 1960 in the Wikipedia database.

Penang Botanic Gardens

Greetings from a damp & cold England. I am currently putting together an article on the Penang Botanic Gardens, as well as one on its first superintendent, Charles Curtis. Unfortunately, I am unable to find any free use photographs of the gardens and its flora & fauna which would improve the article. You could request Flickr authors of such photos to tag their photos for free use (with a valid reason), as some of them are not aware of copyleft licensing. Why? Why does it have to be Malaysia...?

Forgive my over-expression on the title. I know the article Malaysia isn't the only one heavily vandalised, but it's more frequently edited in a non-constructive way than any other articles I encounter (maybe because it's in my watchlist...). The article was recently semi-protected for a short while – not many problems there. But when the time expired, you can obviously see more edits being made by looking at its history page. So, I hope that any admins can evaluate my suggestion to indefinitely semi-protect the respective article. Thanks. Hytar (talk) 23:13, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

OK, I know it's unrelated to the article Malaysia, but I wanted to bring out an issue about the List of Astro channels article. The layout is recently overhauled substantially, and in a not-so-pleasant way. I wouldn't call it vandalism, but it does seems like it.

The editor who did that "major renovation" didn't even consult its talk page, where I suggested several things to improve the article. I also have other grouses about anonymous editors who are not serious in making edits.

I don't know whether the article needs to be semi-protected or not. The admins should know better. Obviously, I'm voicing it out here, and not in its discussion page, with reason mentioned above. Yeah, I seem to be quite fussy on details, but it's for the benefit of Wikipedia readers and potential editors. Hytar (talk) 22:12, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
