Non-Hispanic whites?

[edit]

Is there an acceptable, and less cumbersome, means of referring to non-Hispanic whites? I'd imagine that many Hispanics would identify themselves as white, so a passage like "the departure of whites from meat-packing jobs, and their subsequent replacement by Hispanics" wouldn't seem right, and might even be taken as an affront. In some parts of the U.S., "Anglo" is used for NHWs, but it's not universal even in the U.S., and would probably mystify people from other English-speaking countries. Suggestions? — Ammodramus (talk) 17:52, 12 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The only non Hispanic whites that I can think of are those whose ethnicity does not either come from a Spanish-speaking Latin American country or Spain. That's it. Otherwise, I'd just stick to whatever reliable sources say about the subject. EDIT: Isn't "Caucasian" a term? I wouldn't know otherwise. Erick (talk) 18:05, 12 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Seeking informal mentor for translation of actress' page

[edit]

Hello. I'm hoping to translate an article from Spanish into English. The article is about a film actress (deceased) who was born in Venezuela, but worked in the U.S. and Mexico. While I have been active in smaller Wikipedia tasks, this will be my first article. I may also need some assistance with my intermediate Spanish and formatting for a film related biography, and maybe a little encouragement to keep me moving! Any advice for how I can seek an informal mentor as I progress through this project in my sandbox? Thank you so much for any and all advice. Xplorecre84give (talk) 13:16, 13 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Xplorecre84give: I would look at Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English for assistance. Erick (talk) 20:49, 14 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi I just deorphaned Sara Del Carmen Jofre González and see that pretty much every weblink in the ref section is now dead through linkrot. New List Article on Actors

[edit]

Hello, I am not a member of this task force, but suggest that you take a look at a very under-developed new article: List of Hispanic and Latino American actors. That article should measure up to the population of people it is trying to commemorate, so I recommend modifying or expanding it as you see fit. ---DOOMSDAYER520 (Talk|Contribs) 17:50, 5 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal to rename the project to the Hispanic and Latinx Americans task force

[edit]

In recent years, "Latinx" has been more used as an appropriate usage to refer to people of Latin American descent in the United States. This is due to "Latinx" being used as an all-inclusive term to include non-binary people of Latin American descent. It is for this reason that I propose this task force to be renamed to the Hispanic and Latinx Americans task force instead. If anyone has any objections, feel free to list your concerns below. Erick (talk) 18:29, 5 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Seems like this task force isn't very active, but I agree that it should be renamed with the gender neutral Latinx, which does have s robust article --> Latinx. Remolachacruda (talk) 06:18, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose the use of Latinx. BTW, this proposal is more than a year old, and it went nowhere. --evrik (talk) 14:06, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

[edit]

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:25, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Preferred gender neutral

[edit]

This question is the result of a recent edit at Maya & Miguel.[1]

Does Wikipedia have either an established convention or andy indication of a consensus for a gender-neutral term: Latinx, Latino/a, Latine or do we tend toward Hispanic for this reason?

I searched a few ways but found nothing. My guess would be that it has come up previously. - SummerPhDv2.0 22:05, 26 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm aware there are strong feelings on the question, especially given that the use of various terms varies with various affiliations. I can't imagine letting it run wild is much of a "solution"...
So, <poke>. - SummerPhDv2.0 06:30, 27 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

RfC on Los Angeles Police Department

[edit]

A request for comment regarding whether the lead of Los Angeles Police Department should note the department's exceptional history of corruption, brutality, and discriminatory policing (including the 2000 federal Department of Justice investigation which found racism, brutality, and corruption within the department to be rampant and which led the department to be placed under federal oversight from 2001 to 2013) is ongoing. Volunteer Project Position Opportunity - Hispanic Heritage Month Edit-a-thon

[edit]

OVERVIEW The Hispanic Star is a collective effort to unify Hispanics, bring solutions to help them overcome barriers they face, and positively change the perception of the community. It is both a unifying symbol - inclusive, inspirational - and a tool to demonstrate pride and Hispanic empowerment. Additionally, the network of Hispanic Star Hubs aims to support the community in this locality, partnering with local initiatives and organizations to understand the needs and priorities of the community and taking action where possible to address them.

The Hispanic Star recognizes the importance of Hispanic Heritage Month and the opportunity it presents to be able to elevate and support the Hispanic community, ensuring they are seen, heard, and valued.

As part of this effort, we are looking to host a Hispanic Heritage Month Editathon on Wikipedia to increase visibility and understanding of the contributions of Hispanics to the country. Please reach out to alejandrina@weareallhuman.org if you or someone you know is interested in applying or has any questions.

JOB DESCRIPTION We are looking for a volunteer Wikimedia intern to facilitate partnership with Wikimedia in our Hispanic Heritage Month editathon. This intern will be the direct touchpoint with the Wikipedia team, will manage the project activation (including logistical coordination, activation planning and misc. tasks as recommended by the Wikimedia team to ensure success). This intern will work hand in hand with the WAAH program director to collaborate with foundation resources and integrate the activation within the wider plans of Hispanic Heritage Month.

RESPONSIBILITIES Integrate existing content from partner institutions (i.e. datasets and digitized collections) keeping it relevant, fresh and engaging, including extending the reach of existing collections (especially media, data, and research) to new audiences via Wikimedia platforms, thus strengthening institutions’ mission to share their knowledge.

Women in Red translation contest: April to June 2022

[edit]

At the beginning of April, WikiProject Women in Red is launching a three-month translation contest focused on increasing our coverage of women's biographies. As the Portuguese and Spanish versions of Wikipedia are among the most popular sources for translation, members of Hispanic and Latino American task force may be interested in participating.--Ipigott (talk) 09:23, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nominating "Hispanos" for deletion

[edit]

I nominated the article Hispanos for deletion, since the article as written didn't meet basic notability criteria. Since it's about a group of Hispanic and Latino Americans, maybe some members of this task force want to comment on the AFD page? Erinius (talk) 09:22, 10 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You are invited to join a discussion at Talk:Primos (TV series)#Controversy section about how much emphasis to put onto the "controversy" surrounding the series' following release of its opening sequence on social media and YouTube. This WikiProject received this message because Primos is an upcoming animated series which centers on a multicultural Mexican-American family. Comments would be appreciated. Proposed HLA-importance fixes

[edit]

Hi! I recently came across an AWB run from 2015 which converted this task force's template from {{WikiProject Latinos}} to being part of {{WikiProject United States}}. However, it looks like - instead of this task force inheriting the preceding project's importance ratings - the AWB run instead caused them to be inherited by the wider United States WikiProject. (I've typed up a little bit more of an explanation at User:A smart kitten/random pages/WPUS HLA-importance fixes.)

Because of this, I'm planning to go through Category:Unknown-importance Hispanic and Latino American articles to rectify the HLA-importance= ratings where this has occurred (as described on the page I linked above). However, I just wanted to check before I started this task whether there were any objections from the task force itself.

If you have any questions, and/or if I've explained anything poorly, then please feel free to ask. All the best, ‍—‍a smart kitten[meow] 21:48, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Taking no response as a WP:SILENTCONSENSUS If there are any issues with this, please feel free to leave them here or on my talk page. All the best, ‍—‍a smart kitten[meow] 22:16, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hispanic and Latino American women

[edit]

Shouldn't Category:Hispanic and Latino American women instead be Category:Hispanic and Latina American women since by default it's only females? Nominating it and all of its many subs would be rather time consuming, so I wanted to make sure that there's not a reason that I'm unaware of to not move them before going through that. Is it time for a makeover?

[edit]

I have been experimenting with a newer design for the wikiproject, what do you all think? Oscar_. (talk) 20:09, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Oscar . This Wiki project isn't active, but I support the new design all the way. Erick (talk) 21:13, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Magiciandude, I will start making some changes to the page! Oscar_. (talk) 16:48, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I just made the most significant change, I'm trying to follow the templates of this other wikiproject, but some of them don't work properly. For now I will focus on two sections, the suggested tasks section and the metrics section (which does not exist now). Thanks, --Oscar_. (talk) 16:07, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Shift from task force to stand-alone WikiProject

[edit]

Could the long title be related to the project's low visibility? I was thinking maybe changing to something like Wikipedia:WikiProject Latin & Hispanic heritage would help? What do you'all think? @Magiciandude @Rosiestep @Megalibrarygirl Oscar_. (talk) 19:19, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Oscar_. Currently, the work falls is part of a task force (Wikipedia:WikProject United States) and not a stand-alone WikiProject. If it were a stand-alone WikiProject, we could assume it would be more visible. As for making a change, can you please confirm that this is your thinking:

--Rosiestep (talk) 20:31, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Rosiestep, I was thinking about Wikipedia:WikiProject Latin and Hispanic heritage and include all the past efforts in one, we can make the call on the Mexican-American task force as well.
The overall idea is to initially attract folks to this page via WP:LATINOS. I used a template from another wikiproject but it is taking some time to adapt, and from experience, before adapting something that is not receiving support, it is better to go another way. I do hope that in the next week, during WCNA, we can make these tweaks so that the page is visible, more user friendly and has tasks that folks can complete. Oscar_. (talk) 13:13, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Oscar .. Wonderful; let's do it! I am quite familiar with the mechanics of the move; it's great if you have in mind how to brand it and add tasks and even promote it at WCNA (the largest wiki conference aside from Wikimania). Safe travels, and looking forward to working on this with you in Indianapolis. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:09, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, it'll be interesting to see how this project goes. By the way just out of curiosity which definition of "Hispanic" and "Latino" are we going to use? Erick (talk) 17:35, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would say as inclusive as possible @Magiciandude, what do you think? Oscar_. (talk) 01:14, 28 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I honestly don't know. Do we use the US government's definition of "Latino"? Or should we have open discussion or consensus? Erick (talk) 01:18, 28 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think this needs a bigger discussion, but my first reaction is to avoid restrictions used by governments that may not be the most equitable ones.
I also think about the design of the project as such and I enter into the same dilemmas, e.g which color palettes represent Latinos best? There is even a color that represents so much diversity? I hope we can start answering much of this in the next few months. Oscar_. (talk) 19:14, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Talkpage banner

[edit]

I tried adding this project's talkpage banner to the Californios article by using Rater, and Rater wouldn't let me. So I went to the article's talkpage and added it manually, but it's a redlink (I left the redlink). The old talkpage template {{WikiProject United States}} remains along with the old add-ons: |MexAm=yes |MexAm-importance=mid |HLA=yes |HLA-importance=high. I don't know how to enable the new talkpage banner, but hoping someone here has the tech know-how and can get to it. If there's a need for AWB to make a significant amount of changes, Ser Amantio di Nicolao has been my go-to for that task, but perhaps there are editors here who are also proficient with AWB. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:13, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Good flag @Rosiestep! Since we changed the name, I think it is only fair to have a stand alone banner as well. Let see if @Ser Amantio di Nicolao can help us or guide us in the right direction, cheers Oscar_. (talk) 03:55, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
MSGJ refined the talkpage banner system for Women in Red. Perhaps they would have some thoughts, too, on converting the {{WikiProject United States}} talkpage banner to a {{WikiProject Latin and Hispanic heritage}} talkpage banner for the appropriate articles. --Rosiestep (talk) 10:57, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In the meantime, an editor reverted the edit I made (adding a "WikiProject Latin and Hispanic heritage" talkpage banner) to the Californios talkpage. --Rosiestep (talk) 10:57, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Created Template:WikiProject Latin and Hispanic heritage. You might want to add an image and review the settings. Let me know if you need help — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:19, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is awesome @MSGJ! One question, after this all articles that were in the old template have been transferred to this one? And another question, the articles are added by hand or a bot does the job? Thanks! Oscar_. (talk) 02:09, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
