Userbox for members?

Unbridled Spirit
I'm looking into the Kentucky Unbridled Spirit campaign and even going through the channels to get official permission to use the logo. Might can pull fair use on it. I dunno. Heck, by going through the proper channels, maybe we can even get Earnie himself involved in the Kentucky WikiProject (ha).

Portal:Kentucky
Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Wisconsin all have Portals! Please see my proposal and comment there if you get a chance.
I assume this is something we will want to do sooner or later, so I took the liberty of getting the ball rolling. I stated in a reply on the proposal a few things to include. Here they are again in outline form with some additional items:

I suggest we not worry about the asthetics at this time, but rather concentrate on included content keeping it in outline form. The launch date for the real Portal:Kentucky, per procedure is June 22 at the soonest. Even after the launch, we can use the outline as an expansive resource for all things Kentucky.

History buff needed
Please check out List of current and former capital cities in the United States and make sure that Kentucky's capital cities are listed accurately. A word of warning: the page does contain quite a bit of complicated wiki formatting, so if you're not comfortable editing it, just post your changes on the talk page and someone more experienced will apply them to the article. - Thanks Jonathan. The source you provided on Kentucky's entry, Kentucky's State Capitols (Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives) is interesting. Especially the part about the elm tree! According to the article, the first legislative session, after Virginia granted Kentucky statehood (June 1792), was conducted in a log cabin in Lexington. In that session, they voted to move the capitol to Frankfort and it's been there ever since. I haven't verified yet that Bowling Green was a CSA capitol but I don't doubt it. - Yep, History says that after Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston captured Bowling Green in the summer of 1861, the Russellville Convention (116 delegates from 68 counties) conspired to overthrow the Franfort government and establish a Confederate state government with the capitol at Bowling Green. George W. Johnson (civil war) somehow became Kentucky's Confederate Governor. On December 10, 1861, Kentucky became the 13th state admitted to the Confederacy. Border states (Civil War)#Kentucky Stephen G. Burbridge ("Burbridge the Butcher"), the notorious Union general put a stop to it all in the summer of 1864, when he arrested 22 men in and around Bowling Green for treason. Nominate articles for Portal:United States
I've worked for the past month to update Portal:United States and keep it better maintained. Though, I think the Portal:United States would be even better with broader participation. Having the portal well-maintained is very helpful in making the case for subportals for individual states, such as Portal:Kentucky. One way to do that is instead of choosing the "selected article" myself each week, if others would nominate articles and help make decisions. (same goes for pictures, though these are stocked up through July 29) If there is anything related to Kentucky (or anything else related to the U.S. - culture, music, literature, geography, history, politics, ...), please nominate. - Welcome to the project, Hyper Anthony! I replaced the {{cleanup}} tag with the {{RRevised}} one. (Carries less of a stigma). Looking at some of the other states' pages, this one isn't bad at all. I'm thinking about creating a Kentucky counties worksheet for figuring out districts (fed and state) and other tasks. Categorization and templates
I've been doing the work in a gnome-like manner, but I just wanted to say officially that I'm finished (for now) revising the WikiProject Kentucky template for aesthetics and clarity, and also, more importantly, creating a WikiProject Kentucky category where all articles tagged with the template will now end up listed in that category. Cool, eh? What's more, I've linked this new category to the WikiProject Louisville category as well as the WikiProject Kentucky State Highways category. And, of course, it's also a child of WikiProject U.S. states.
The next thing we need is a banner/userbox for WikiProject Kentucky members (for placement on user pages) and an associated category. Of course, if somebody else wants to beat me to it, have at it. Cheers! — Stevie is the man! Talk | Work 01:47, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
- Very kewl Stevietheman! I've been watching your gnome-like editing. Sorry, but I've been busy with the Community article and WP:CBTF stuff. Have you seen the Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team templates? You can automate assessment tables with them. Check out WikiProject Michigan. You know much about WP:1 assessment? We may need to start that someday or at least start setting it up. I'll bring it up in a new post in a bit.

- I vaguely know about the assessment tables, but have never really investigated them deeply. I do like the idea of tracking the best articles produced by a WikiProject. It looks like we could add both WikiProject Kentucky and WikiProject Louisville tables to the page (of course, we would need to address project overlaps seriously at that point).

Generosity?
A user from 165.215.91.117 left this nice link to a batch of not-so-bad pictures on the Kentucky article with this edit. I wonder if He was being generous? - I had reverted that link out because it wasn't clear how an unformatted list of various images was an appropriate extension to the article. Removal of images for violation of fair use
An admin just removed use of Kentucky images for use in this project, like he did for WikiProject Louisville. What I did to correct it in WP Louisville is find a generic "free" (GFDL, public domain, etc.) image and substitute it back in. Cataloguing articles for this project
I've been spending time placing the {{WikiProject Kentucky}} template on the talk pages of Kentucky articles, and now we have almost 250 articles catalogued. This is just to request that other WikiProject Kentucky members spend time finding Kentucky-related articles and adding this template so we can accomplish full coverage in the near future. Thanks! - I'm a little confused about the template-- is the idea of this project to create basically a glorified category and community by placing the template on all the kentucky related articles, or is the template only being placed on articles that require work? i got it on the Centre College article of which I'm a contributor to and just wanted to make sure it's not being tagged for cleanup or anything; it's a fairly comprehensive--and nearly complete--article, if I may say so. the wording on the template has me asking, how can i really participate in this project if the article is practically complete? - It is to cover all Kentucky-related articles under this project. Cataloguing the articles is not just about articles that need work, per se, but making other decisions as well, such as which articles to take to Good or Featured status, or how best to categorize articles (just two examples). This cataloguing is really an initial process before organizing articles by what kind of attention articles should get under the project. If the Centre College article is complete (even though I don't think any article is ever complete), you can participate by working on other articles in the project. It's your choice at any rate. Would anyone object if I reorganized the "Articles" section to split it into two sections that look like the "Hall of Fame" and "Tasks" sections in WikiProject Louisville? - It's feasible, but could also be extraordinarily complex from a technical perspective. I would just request that you be very selective with the points you place on it, so that it can be readable to most visitors. Generally, I like the concept. Proposal for governors' pages cleanup

- I agree. I'm not very proficient at using Wikipedia's code, so I may need a little help on that front. I think the tables with the picture are great. Photographs for all of the governors are available at http://www.kdla.ky.gov/resources/KYGovernors.htm. I don't know how best to go about getting permission for these photos, and I've observed some obsessive concern about public domain regarding other photos on Wikipedia. Proposed format:
- Box on the right titled with the governor's most commonly called name (i.e., Ernie Fletcher). The box should include a photo, then which governor they were (i.e., 10th governor of Kentucky), their lieutenant governor(s), predecessor, successor, birthplace and date, place and date of death if applicable, party, profession, and spouse(s).
- On the left, the governor's full name, dates of birth and death, and a very brief synopsis of their political careers. I think all should begin with "Governor X (b - d) was the Xth governor of Kentucky."
- A section labelled "Biography" or "Personal life" - any preference?
- A section labelled "Political career"
- Possibly a sub-section labelled "Candidacy and governorship." Note that data on returns is available at http://www.kdla.ky.gov/resources/KYGovernors.htm.
- A sub-section labelled major accomplishments (this should, I suppose, include major events that happened under the governor's watch)
- See also (at least including history of Kentucky)

- Sounds good. I would choose "Biography" over "Personal life". Also, the articles need succession boxes (one each for Governor and Party nominee succession, and other successions, if applicable; see Paul E. Patton for an example) to go above the KY Governors template. Last, at some point, we will need to figure out how we should fit in Confederate governors, but that's probably not as important as the other needed revisions. Stevie is the man! United States House of Representives from KY
Hello all. I'm going to carve out more time to work on Kentucky articles. I've kinda done it all along but know I can do more. Today I started two article on former members of the United States House of Representatives from KY. Wendell H. Meade and Andrew J. May. I'm working off of information in Biographical Directory of the United States Congress database. Even though they are not very short, I marked them as stubs because I know we can find more details about their lives. Going to keep working on congressional delegations from araound this time period.

Collaboration of the week
I want to gauge interest in having a Kentucky collaboration of the week. I, for one, would participate if there were one. I do suggest that it be a collaboration of the fortnight or possibly collaboration of the month instead. So let's hear it: who thinks they would participate if we had such a project, and how do you think it should be structured? (Is there an option to have your signature automatically added? Re: the collaboration, I would definitely participate, and I agree that a period longer than a week would make sense. As far as how it's structured, I guess just look at how other state WikiProjects are doing it, and copy it. We can always modify to our tastes over time. Stevie is the man! - Yeah, I knew how to add my signature, I just forget it about half the time. Check out the Australian Collaboration of the Fortnight. I think the COTWs follow a pretty standard template. My vote is for one topic a fortnight (a month is just too slow, but a week is not enough time to take a stub to feature-article-quality, IMO). I'd like to hear a few more people express interest before moving forward; most of the CotWs seem to be for countries rather than states, and I bet they have a larger pool of editors than we do. - There's no preference for auto-adding a signature, to my knowledge. And like CQ, I'm thinking a month would work out best, as we just don't have enough members (yet) to get collaborations done in two weeks. And I like CQ's idea of working on History of Kentucky, which has huge gaps. I created the article because its spin-off was inevitable, but not being a Kentucky historian limits my ability to work on it by myself. - I think that's a great idea. We could just put a section near the top of the Wikiproject Kentucky page describing what this month's focus is and directing people to vote for next month on the talk page. I like that it is less formal, and it could also cover things like categories that need cleaning, the portal, and groups of articles rather than individual ones (KY governors comes to mind). Most of the CotWs seem to focus on taking one article to good or feature status, and I think that goal is admirable but a bit myopic and quite unrealistic. History of Kentucky
As some of you know, we've started a History of Kentucky article and a Timeline of Kentucky history and there is a proposed article Kentucky in the Civil War. I have a few inclusion concerns:
- Inclusion of Native Americans in the United States (Kentucky before the europeans arrived)
- Inclusion of interesting details about early settlement other than the Daniel Boonie stuff
- Comprehensive coverage of Kentucky in the Civil War as a noteable and complex part of the Western Theater of the American Civil War and a Border state. (including the importance of things like the Russellville Convention and Battles of Sacramento, Columbus, Perryville ...)
- Political, economic and social development in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. (Development of railroads, highways, communications etc.)
- Natural disasters such as the effects of the New Madrid Seismic Zone (1811 and 1812) and the Floods of 1913 and 1937 and others (what Kentucky cities were effected?).
- Other notable events (add yours)
I just want to see if other Kentuckians are interested in making this a major collaboration (week, fortnight, month, year, whatever) and to get a sense of how to proceed. Do we need a separate Kentucky in the Civil War article and is the Timeline of Kentucky history necessary/useful? (I vote yes on both counts). Who else is willing to dig in? What else should be included in the History of Kentucky? What can we do as WikiProject Kentucky? What are Your thoughts? • CQ 18:12, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
- I had started a todo list on the talk page of History of Kentucky. I would encourage everyone to place their ideas there. As far as additional ideas, I like your list, and I need some time to think of additional items. The history of tobacco growing and coal mining in the state jump out at me. - The timeline of Kentucky is a great idea that (IMO) needs a great deal of work. There are a lot of important dates in Kentucky history, and frankly I don't know a good way of choosing which ones are appropriate for that article. I suppose we should come up with some criteria on that page's talk page. The History of Kentucky article needs work, too, and I'll be focussing on it in the immediate future. I think it could use so kind of visual timeline, but I definately think that the main timeline should continue to be developed in more depth as a separate article.
- Other worthwhile topics would be the development of agriculture and industry in the state, including the importance of horse farming and racing, as well as the discovery and exploitation of coal deposits. Lamont A Cranston 18:38, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
- OK. I just sectionized the Timeline of Kentucky history article and added some entries and references. I think it's OK to just throw things in there (regardless of noteability, but just keep it in reasonable order and format) and use it as a tool for writing the History of Kentucky article. I vote we go ahead and start Kentucky in the Civil War. Russellville Convention can just merge and redirect there, I think. IMO, we need to pay close attention to the Border states (Civil War), the Western Theater of the American Civil War and other articles trying not to be too redundant. I think it would also be cool to make sure all the town and city articles that play a role have some summary and linkage to the Kentucky in the Civil War article.
- By the way, I want to make it clear that I don't ardently oppose a separate timeline article, so nobody should worry that I'll AfD it or anything. :) Also, I think it's great that there's already interest in creating the Kentucky in the Civil War article, but I don't see why we can't keep the Russellville Convention as a separate article, as there's probably a lot to write on specific to that subject. The Kentucky in the Civil War should mainly summarize and tie together what's in other articles, while perhaps adding some minor content of its own. It's naturally a summary article. - I think that there is enough content for separate articles on the major battles. There are already articles on some of the major battles. We need to be careful not to make duplicate articles because some of these battles had several names. I like doing biographies and plan on doing some on civil war military groups. Discovery of a great image source
Lately, I've discovered a great source for images we can use in the Wikipedia. Go to Flickr's Advanced Search page and search for a subject as if searching for something on Google, but to be sure that the images are usable on Wikipedia, at the bottom of the search page check "Only search within Creative Commons-licensed photos", then also check "Find content to use commercially" and "Find content to modify, adapt, or build upon". These must be checked to find images that would be accepted by Wikipedia. Image:AliCenter.jpg is an example of the quality of images I've been able to find there. - Yes, I use them quite alot. I added an image from Flikr to Cumberland Gap article today. I have several more of the Gap that I may add if the article is expanded. Usually I upload them to Commons instead of Wikipedia so that other projects can use them. Other people do too, so looking in Commons for images is a good idea. Also, remember that not all Creative Commons licenses are accepted on Wikipedia and Commons. Only by-sa (Attribution-ShareAlike), by ((Attribution), or sa(ShareAlike). CC licenses that are limited to non-commercial use can not be used either place. Commons does not allow any type of fair use image so do not upload them there. Kentucky in the Civil War
Kentucky in the Civil War is now an article. Louisville in the Civil War has a lot of content that can be used there (Thanks Stevietheman) as do a scad of Town, City, Battlefield, Park and other articles. I have learned of Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history and added their tag to the talk page. As yet, they have no American Civil War taskforce in their array of subprojects, but that could change. It is possible that a massive collaboration to optimize coverage of the whole Civil War may happen and our little project could play a part. We'll see. CQ 18:40, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- Sounds good. I would also recommend to anyone who can make it to the Kentucky State Fair to go by the Kentucky Historical Society area and all the Kentucky county booths and collect all the historical info you can find--this is all in the South Wing. I have two bagfulls of brochures and stuff, and I'm looking forward to finding new jewels of info. Of course, much of that might end up going into city, county, park and other articles, but some could also go into the history articles as well. Stevie is the man! New project image
Today I created and uploaded a new image for the project. It's currently displaying on the project page and all project templates. Let me know if you like it or would prefer something else, or that this image should be altered. I just thought the project would be more identifiable by using the state's shape with a farm background rather than the state's flag, as it doesn't differentiate from other flags very well at small sizes. OK, I've been sneaking around like a naughty little gnome to ensure that all Kentucky-related articles were catalogued--this is mostly complete, although a bot is still set to run to catalogue much of the remaining articles not yet catalogued. This cataloguing was needed for two reasons: 1) To make it easier for us to organize project tasks and apply quality scales, and 2) To make it possible to have a "change patrol" on all Kentucky-related pages. - Very sorry to hear this. I guess this would be crafted into an article the same way other major accidents are. Check out Accidents and incidents in aviation#Lists of commercial airliner accidents for how they are listed, and certainly for examples of what such an article would look like. Also, make sure it's categorized under Category:Transportation in Kentucky and catalogued for the project ({{WikiProject Kentucky}} on the talk page). - I see that this WikiProject has created a template for commerical airliner incidents in Kentucky, and made that a subcategory of commercial airliner incidents in the US. There is no other state that has this subcategory, and going to the US version, I was looking for this crash, and it wasn't there. I was going to add it, until I saw it was a part of this one. Can we just get rid of this template, and use the US version? I realize you are all proud of WikiProject Kentucky, but, shouldn't we draw a line of what gets broken down to the state level, and what might be more useful at the country level? Just curious... Standardization of state templates

I'd like to get working on a WPKY award, because I think that awards can motivate people to work harder and better. Also, the WikiPedia awards page says "be bold," so I think we ought to. Bowling Green population discrepancies
The U.S. Census Bureau projects approximately 52,000 people live in Bowling Green as of 2005. However, all welcome signs to the city have very recently been changed, boasting a population of 63,400. Does anyone know why? Does it have something to do with the city including a large portion of WKU students in the count?
I'd like to add that simply because the city's welcome signs now read this number doesn't mean it's true and therefore should not be posted on Bowling Green's Wikipedia page; it's very misleading. A population of 63,400 would put B.G. well ahead of Owensboro, making it the third largest city in the state, but in the same sentence it states we are the fourth most populous city. Thoughts? - Interesting. I suggest that a reasonable action would be to take a photo of the sign and upload it to the commons with a Creative Commons license of your choosing. Pictures speek louder than words, ya know. Elbow room cried Daniel Boone
Some time ago, a few WikiProject Kentucky members started the Kentucky Wikicity at Jimbo and Angela's Wikia space (formally WikiCities). This space can be used by Kentuckians to develop non-encyclopedic content and web resources that are innapropriate for Wikipedia but important for Kentucky.
The site has sort of lapsed into a stagnant state, but I personally think it's an excellent way to expand our workspace as a project, while helping to cleanup the ever-more-bloated Wikipedia:Project namespace. I also think it's a great tool for free expression as a Proud Kentuckian and a way to build an online community of interest for our Commonwealth. Kentucky Units in the Civil War
I have started writing articles for the member units of the Orphan Brigade. I have only delt with a stub for Cobb's Battery thus far. I will attack more on Monday. Changes to Higher Education Template
I'm new to the project (and Wikipedia) so I don't want to just start changing things without asking, but I think we need to update the Kentucky Higher Education template to reflect the changes in the community college system. Specifically, the following colleges have merged:
- Morehead (Rowan Technical College) - merged with Maysville Community College to become Maysville Community and Technical College
- Owensboro Technical College - merged with Owensboro Community College to become Owensboro Community and Technical College
- Paintsville (Mayo Technical College) and Prestonsburg Community College (which is spelled Prestonburg on the template) - merged to become Big Sandy Community and Technical College
We also need to decide what to do with the related articles.
My recommendations would be to eliminate the above four colleges from the template and add the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. I think we should have the articles forward to the appropriate merged school, and mention in the opening paragraph for that school that it is the product of a merger. If I can get a couple of assents to this course of action, I'll take care of it. Acdixon 21:12, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Still doing cleanup in Kentucky higher education. Are Kentucky Mountain Bible College, Clear Creek Baptist Bible College, and Draughons Junior College omitted from the Higher Ed template intentionally or by oversight? If by oversight, I will add them. I'll also see what I can do with regard to the requested Commonwealth Baptist College article.
I've added infoboxes to all of the institutions of higher learning in Kentucky, added them all to WikiProject Kentucky and WikiProject Schools, ensured they bear the Kentucky Higher Education template (except when they don't appear on the template yet) and any relevant stubbing, and tried to add categories where appropriate. I also cleaned up the articles for all the community and technical colleges, which were often one-sentence wonders like: "Bowling Green Technical College is a community college within the Bowling Green, Kentucky." What about a category for members of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System? Yes or no won't hurt my feelings.
Several of these higher ed articles could benefit from someone with some local knowledge. Hope to spark some interest soon. Acdixon 21:39, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
Big Blue Nation
Thought I'd throw this one out for discussion. About a week ago, I authored an article entitled Big Blue Nation regarding the rabid fan base of University of Kentucky athletics. It was subsequently redirected by another user to the article on Kentucky Wildcats. I disputed the change with the user, and he relented and reverted his redirect, but contended that the article might constitute vandalism (?!?!) under Wikipedia's guidelines. I'm not intimately familiar with those guidelines, but I maintained that Big Blue Nation was just as valid an article topic as Cameron Crazies or Raider Nation.
I realize I'm asking a group that could be biased, but give me your feedback. How should this article be handled? Acdixon 14:41, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

First round of category hierarchy cleanup complete
Today, I completed the first round of category hierarchy cleanups in Category:Kentucky. Before I started this cleanup, the category hierarchy was very disorganized and incoherent, and a lot of articles were miscategorized in the top category.

This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Assessment system for Christmas

I noticed this WikiProject would like to have an Assessment System, following the Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team's system. It would provide an opportunity for interested contributors to assess any article in the WikiProject. An example of how this would look can be found at the Ethnic groups articles by quality assessment table. I've done this before for two different WikiProjects. Wikipedia Day Awards
Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors.
