How broad is the scope of this project?

I know this project is focused on "guitarists" but it seems to include the subset of guitar makes and models. My question is do broader guitar related article like Guitar, Luthier, resonator guitar, articles about playing styles and genres etc. fall under our scope? Should those article be covered under the Wikipedia:WikiProject Musical Instruments? Just wondering. Darrell Wheeler (talk) 07:11, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

My view is that any article that would be of interest to guitarists is within our scope. There is also no reason that multiple projects can't work on an article. I think we started the guitar equipment task force because a lot of people who joined this project also were interested in working on articles about guitars, amps, etc. Unfortunately we do not have the active membership to pay proper attention to even a small fraction of guitarist and guitar articles here, but if you think something could benefit from another project member's attention, feel free to tag it with out project banner. --Spike Wilbury ♫ talk 14:34, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

Fender stratocaster ultra

Yeah, it should. If you click the "what links here" link for that page, it is a mess of redirects and alternate titles all linking to that page. I will go ahead and move it and fix the redirects. Guitar manufacturer pages

I am going to cross-post this to the Equipment task force talk page, but editor Anger22 recently brought up the fact that many of the articles we have for individual guitar models are completely inane and almost empty. A lot of them have 1-2 sentences and an infobox. Please, do not create all these articles if you have no intention of fleshing them out. If you spot them, merge any useful content into the main article for that manufacturer and redirect the article.

Collaboration?

I'm starting the (painful) process of copyediting the Eric Clapton article. I think we can get it up to FA. It needs a lot of help.. there are preposterous POV statements and random nonsense peppered all over the article. Also, if someone is experienced with citation styles, the citations and sources really need to be cleaned up, put in proper {{cite}} templates, etc.

When you quickly browse that article it doesn't seem to bad. When you really dig deep into it and go line for line it really jumps out just how much work it needs. Some of it is OK. But the poor article is peppered with soap opera, drama and fine details about other people and place that have no real impact on the timeline flow for Clapton himself. I am just shaking my head on where to go for a couple of sections. Can we compile a decent 'semi-detailed' to-do list on the articles talk page. I've poked into it a couple of times but ended up losing my changes due to edit conflict. We'll have to co-ordinate and take turns. Anger22 (Talk 2 22) 01:21, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

Problems with Mick Taylor article

Having a bit of a struggle with the Mick Taylor article. It had been reduced to a page resembling a fansite with multiple issues themost serious being POV fancruft praising and serious lack of verifiabilty with much of the content mirroring a Mick Taylor fansite page which is loaded with original research and also has very serious issues as far as reliability and verifiability. Some attempts have been made to clean the article up but it appears the fancruft editor who turned the page into a praise page in the first place has decided he prefers his version better and keep undoing any POV cleanup and deleting maintenance tags for text that requires it. One interview that has been posted as a reference, a valid ref, actually contradicts some of the content the the [cite request] tags have been placed on. Rather than remove the content altogether it was tagged for some references. But the tags keep being deleted. Some help would be nice. Thank you. 142.167.66.181 (talk) 13:45, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

More POV troubles, this time with Lonnie Mack

I was quite alarmed at how much cruft has oozed its way into this article. And I caught one of the regular editors altering referenced text to POV peacock it up to his own personal praise. After a quick read through, I would almost support a rewrite: Most of the article does not read like an encyclopedia entry, more like some kind of biography (lacking NPOV yes). By regular editor you mean User:Slp512? (diff example http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lonnie_Mack&diff=186212250&oldid=186022454) Maybe convincing him to stop adding unsourced material/cruft would make the job easier. List of guitarists from companies/genres

I would like to check with you what you think of these lists: Category:Lists of guitarists. As far as I can see, none of the lists in that category has sources at all, what made me react was List of Rickenbacker players, 7,8Kb of unsourced linked names. an infobox question

could somebody outline (and/or point me to) the guidelines for what belongs in the "notable instrument[s]" section of the infobox? is it supposed to list the instrument[s] the player makes the most use of, or signature models even if the player very rarely uses them, or rare/unusual instruments in a players arsenal, or ... ? the question (naturally!) arises from some ongoing differences of opinion, so it would help to know what the Standard Practice is for these sections of the boxes - thanks

Introducing myself, with questions

Hello, I've been adding text and references to guitarists of several genres, focusing primarily on those who play roots/folk music and rock music, in addition to another project here in the wikipedia that doesn't have anything to do with guitarists. I wonder if this is the place to note pages of guitarists whose pages need help? If so, here are some that I feel need more help. Someone already mentioned Mick Taylor, but also, Lowell George, and Mark Knopfler and all the members of Dire Straits come right to mind! Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. Anyone looking for a good project? The John Norum article read like it was written by an 8 year old

The John Norum article is in extremely bad shape. Horrible English usage. The article looks like a cut/paste job from a non-english website where the contributor simply ran the text through Babelfish and then stuck it on Wikipedia. It reads like a first person story style account only the person recounting the subject text couldn't speak English. Several sections cut be cut from 4-5 paragraphs dow to 2-3 due to the article drifting away from details about the subject and digging into details about his band or bandmates. Classical Guitarist Project

The Classical guitarist project page has been a bit dormant. The few listed members seem to be still active on Wikipedia. And most still seem to still edit the odd page tagged by the the project. But the project itself seems to have lost some focus especially on its talk page. If any member of this project wishes to join in under the Classical guitarist banner the help would be appreciated. Perhaps the classical guitarists project should be merged back into this project as a classical guitarist taskforce opporating under the WP:GUITAR banner? Just a suggestion. I see a separate project has been created for Fender enthusiasts which has not been too active lately. Perhaps it could have its agendas merged back in under the umbrella of this project as well? Again, just a suggestion. I do not know the steps to get such a procedure to happen beyond starting the discussion to do so. Any thoughts? Peter Fleet (talk) 01:43, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

I have asked for a recommendation on this subject. I really so no reason why, if the members of that proejct who are still active agree, that a taskforce can just be formed anew. Many of the editors that were in that project are still very active in classical guitar related pages. They just don't talk about it on their project page. It's like the members of this project whoare all familiar with one another and tend top talk directly to one another rather than bring their conversations here. Does that mean the original project has to be re-directed here? I contacted some of the original project members before but did not receive any response. I will try again. I feel it would be a good taskforce to operate under this parent project since, obviously, we share the same interests but across a different scope of music. Thanks for your efforts. Classical guitarist articles contain many errors with regards to the particular classical style the artist plays. I was happy to see the genre field removed from the musician infobox. But I see an effort to get it back. Which is troubling. If anyone wishes to speak to this issuse the discussion is found at WPP:MUSIC. Thanks for the inactive project follow-up. A project for anyone whose bored

Category:Unassessed guitarist articles. Wow. At one time we had that down to zero. Now it's back up over 500. I have taken on the challenge before. It's not too hard. Just remember... be strict. No matter how long an article might be. If it has no references its just a start. The guidelines are pretty easy and the template tag is a jif to add in. I will take a shot at it. List of Gibson players

I wonder if List of Gibson players needs some differentiation between six-string and others like the EDS-1275 doubleneck on the one hand, and basses on the other? Also, do we include people who are noted Epiphone players in the Gibson list?--Voxpuppet (talk • contribs) 15:41, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

I couldn't agree more the Gibson Byrdland list links to the general list of endorsed Gibson players for all of their strung instruments it is not helpful. I have been trying to link to a list on another forum but it keeps being wiped off.The present Link is to a source of information so general as to be useless. The list was created by this project to eliminate list-crufting the product pages. Consensus among all administrators was and remains that no players are to be listed anywhere but the appropriate player list which must include valid references from reliable sources to support the notability of the artists that are listed. Hey Izzy. I am only online for a brief minute or two but will be back for a longer stretch late Tuesday/early Wednesday. Article is coming along nicely. What direction are you taking it next? You say cleanup. Are you going to try and add inline cites? Or expanding it any further. Or just need an extra set of eyes to help copy-editing? Is there anymore content or citations from the individual amp articles that can be carried over?(without negating any reason to have those pages continue) There is a Fender Amp book listed among the page sources, which I don't have. an RfC of interest

an RfC you all might be interested in is in progress about whether the genre field should be reinstated in album info-boxes. there's some preliminary discussion on the same page about whether to reinstate it in artists' info-boxes as well, so if you have feelings about it either way, you might want to join in. thanks and swing on Sssoul (talk) 23:23, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

I have already commented that the removal of the genres was a welcome change and voiced my reasons. But my reasons were misunderstood. Other than you Sssoul, and Wiki alf and a few others, I don't think that the loud minority of users who are trying to bring the field back fully understand the massive harm they are trying to re-introduce. Why does everyone feel it is an edit-war issue? I don't understand how so many editors can be so stupid. If there is a recall to vote keep them removed I will certainly oppose the field being re-instated. But this is a case where POV pushers may win over the group of bold editors trying to improve Wikipedia as a verifiable source of information. The debate that has exploded following the removal of the genre field has accomplished nothing other than wasting a lot of time. Peter Fleet (talk) 02:00, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Buckethead task force?

I'd like to start a Buckethead task force. Main goals would be improving the main article, the discography entries and all other related articles such as Praxis, Pieces, DJ Disk, Bryan Mantia, Shin Terai, Travis Dickerson...

The main article is viewed 4000+ times a day [1], what will increase the next few weeks (release of Chinese Democracy and Living On Another Frequency). It's not written very well and lacks structure. Plus there are some major facts missing or uncited.

Articles on his albums (see Monsters and Robots or Electric Tears) are even worse, mostly consisting only of the minimum data. I'd like to work with some other guys on improving all this tasks. --HexaChord (talk) 20:44, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

• I'd be interested in helping there. I don't have a whole lot of free time, but this is one of the pages I spend a lot of time checking on while I'm around. I also have a large number of the albums and a scanner available to me. One area of question though is notability on listing individual albums, especially since the liner notes are usually very sparse and the albums generally receive little press. I know I've run into notability complaints in regards to the Viggo Mortensen & Buckethead collaborations. I don't understand the system well enough yet to make a strong argument one way or another. -D (talk) 12:20, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

• Nice! The albums won't be easy I know but we can improve them for sure. The Dragons of Eden (album) not even refers to Carl Sagans book The Dragons of Eden at the moment. Over at Buckethead.tk there's a nice thread consisting of possible song title sources for most of the solo albums. This could be researched, cited and put in the articles aswell. Then we could collect reviews available online and include them. BTW: Some of the allmusic-links seem to be broken. That's only bout the albums, but have a look at Praxis (band) - there's about no information at all. Some lists but nothing else. I guess even my German article is better... Unclassed articles

I have tried to lend some help to an old 'call-to-arms' request from Anger22 to clean up some of the unclassed guitarist articles. With Anger22 unable to contribute due to bust work/travel commitments I thought I would take up the charge. Any assistance from anybody with a free 10-15 minutes would be great. It was questioned earlier about whether some of the pages tagged as guitarist project pages truly fell under the project's mandate (differentiating between a "guitarist" and a "musician who just happens to play guitar every now and then") I won't try and tackle that so perhaps a longer serving project member might want to review the pages that are marked as 'guitarist' pages and mayber remove the ones that don't really fall under this project's scope. I had a quick look through the 500+ unassessed articles and made some fixes on all articles having a (guitarist) in their lemma. They should be guitar players to some extend. Disruptive IP edits on the Stratocaster and Telecaster articles

An IP user with a previous history of personal attacks and disruption is ignoring consensus over image choice in the two Fender guitar pages. GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. Help needed: Steel string acoustic bracing article

Hello, I am writing an article on steel string acoustic bracing and how different bracing styles and "voicing" can affect tone. Hopefully the article will develop into a useful reference for players who want to understand how their guitar works and what's inside the box and, for example, to understand the difference between factory built guitars and hand made instruments. I've written the basic text and have a reference list, but due to some kind of software glitch I can't upload the photos - taken by me in a friend's workshop, so no copyright issues.

Stevie Ray Vaughan article in bad shape.

I just cleaned up a load of unecyclopedic pov and original research from the Stevie Ray Vaughan article but it is just a drop in the bucket. An editor using numerous IPs and single purpose accounts had added volumes of uncited fanboy cruft to the point where the article was starting to read like an 18th century romantic poem. Some assistance would be great to help clean the article more and add some referenced content in place of the junk that is there now. Fair Deal (talk) 01:23, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Fanboy trouble

As far as I can see there has not been any changes to the original consensus to not list personal favorite players in guitar articles. Has anyone else had trouble with this lately? Peter Fleet (talk) 20:49, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Allen Collins...Please Help!

Allen Collins Hello editors, I would like to see the following information posted on Allen Collins:

"In 2003, Gibson Guitars honored Allen with a limited edition Explorer. The guitar is made of African limba wood and features an aged finished, Maestro vibrola, and classic humbucking pickups."

This is a fact, however I cannot find this information in the Gibson News online anymore because of the age of the article. It was published in Oct. 2003. This information is listed on other websites, but I have a feeling that these sites will be seen as mere fan sites and not reliable sources. However, Gibson DID make a limited edition of 100 Allen Collins Explorers that replicated his original '58 Korina Explorer to a T, and they retailed for around $12 000.00 US. They are now valued at much more than that!

My second wish is to see Wikipedia include the information about Roll For Rock. Allen founded it in '88, two years before he died. He wanted to raise awareness about physical disabilities and he wanted to help other people who were facing them. As I'm sure you know, Allen was paralyzed in '86. There is hardly ever a mention of what Allen did between '86 and '90. I would very much like the world to know that Allen did not just fade away. He did what he always did -- he tried to make something good out of whatever difficult situation he found himself in.

In 2008, Roll For Rock (yes, I know that "For" should not be capitalized, but that is the way Allen and Bill trademarked it)re-released "Here, There & Back" by Allen Collins Band. The CD insert and the CD itself were produced by Allen's father, who owns LAAC Publishing Co. The CD insert details all the information about Allen and Roll For Rock, but I have been told that it cannot be used as a source because I wrote it. I gave the writing as a gift to Bill and Mr. C, they have the author credit. The thing is, there is VERY little information about Roll For Rock published, so this might be the only source for now, I am working on it, believe me! Would some type of authorization from Mr. Collins help? The CD is registered under Roll4Rock Music with the Library of Congress. The barcode number is: 707541097598. I would be happy to mail one of these CD's to anyone who would like to post the information so that there would be no percieved conflict of interest. It is a collectors limited edition, 25th anniversary re-master. I am very new to wikipedia and I am learning how it all works. In fact, I'm not really sure if I am posting this discussion in the correct spot! Be patient, lend me a help'n hand, and let's see if we can't all work together to make Allen's page a true reflection of all that he accomplished. It is very hard for his friends and family to repeatedly see that most people who love his music have no idea that he tried to right some wrongs before he left us.

The charity would require a third party source for verification as to its validity and to its claims as "non-profit." The guitar model should have a different source other than an online retailer. If an article about the guitar model from a pro publication (Guitar Player, Guitar World etc) can be found then the content can be re-added to the page. A request concerning photographs of David Gilmour.

The following is a message posted on June 21, 2009 on Talk:David Gilmour. It was posted to no response.

There are four photographs of David Gilmour on his wikipedia article. All of them were taken during the 2000s decade. Something that I want to request would be one or more pictures of David Gilmour during his time with Pink Floyd during 1968 through 1994. I think that would be appropriate, since that was the era in which he was most famous and most notable for. Does anyone agree with me that there should be such photos of David Gilmour on this article?
