Guidelines for article creation
[edit]I seem to recall having conversations last year as to when articles should best be created. There is always a spate of premature creation and, on occasion, fantasy article creation has occurred in the past. Given the history of the Master Cricket League, the South African T20 franchise league, the BPL etc... it would seem that we'd be better off not jumping the gun each year in order to avoid looking stupid.
Could I suggest some guidelines for general discussion:
- league season articles (such as 2017 Pakistan Super League) should be created no more than six months before the scheduled start of the season. These should avoid too much in the way of certainty about where the league will be played, which teams will take part etc... until this information is known for sure
- Draft articles (such as 2017 Pakistan Super League players draft) should be created no more than one month before the draft is scheduled to occur. They should avoid too much speculation
- Team season articles (such as Islamabad United in 2017) should be created no more than ome month before the scheduled start of the competition - and may be best left until the competition has begun
- Final articles (such as 2017 Pakistan Super League Final) should not be created before the start of the tournament - and may be best left until just before the final itself
- Squad articles (such as 2017 Pakistan Super League squads) should not be created until the draft process has been completed
- List of players articles (such as List of Islamabad United cricketers) should not be created until the team has played a match in the competition. They should not be updated with the date of the upcoming season until the season has begun. Only players who actually play in a match as one of the starting 11 should have the new season's date added - i.e. if Sam Billings does not play for Islamabad United in 2018 but is an unused member of the squad, then 2018 should not be added after his name; if he does play then the date should only be added after he has made an appearance in a match
- New team articles (such as Multan Sultans) should not be created until an official announcement from the league has been released and it is known for sure that the team has been founded. In the past league officials have voiced opinions about teams which may be created. Such speculation may belong on the Pakistan Super League page if it is referenced. Do not use this as an excuse to create a new article until it is known for sure that a team exists. It may be best to wait until just before the initial draft that a team takes part it
I think these are consistent with how we operated prior to the 2017 season? I maybe wrong of course, but that's my recollection - and I think we discussed this stuff somewhere then.
I may have missed article types?
Thoughts please? Blue Square Thing (talk) 06:23, 18 October 2017 (UTC)
- There is no consensus here. You are just posting stuff unilaterally. So said The Great Wiki Lord. (talk) 22:49, 18 October 2017 (UTC)
- Actually, as I said above I think, it's based on discussions that were had last year with some other ideas thrown in for discussion. That's why I out "thoughts please" at the end, wrote that "I think these are consistent with..." and "I seem to recall...". This is the place to have that discussion. Blue Square Thing (talk) 05:20, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
- Your whole post is targeted against what I have done. Instead of trying to just bully your opinion over me, who about you try opening a discussion before making redirects. I am still waiting for your AfDs. So said The Great Wiki Lord. (talk) 22:58, 18 October 2017 (UTC)
- @TheGreatWikiLord: This is only you who talks about Afd(s), no other has talked yet. If you are yourself waiting for Afd(s), then why creating pages? Why thinking yourself that others are bullying and trolling your edits, if you say put them on Afd?? Why just you don't wait yourself, no matter you think what??? If the pages have to be created, anyone could have done it yet, like you. But this is strange that a person creates pages and say put them on Afd. Notifying Blue Square Thing and Mar4d too. M. Billoo 00:50, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
- You've made some reasonable suggestions below about two of my points. How do you feel on the others? Blue Square Thing (talk) 16:32, 20 October 2017 (UTC)
- Let's not trade uncivil remarks please, and instead focus on improving the content in good faith. I wholeheartedly agree with the proposals put forth by Blue Square Thing; the timelines presented appear appropriate. Anything created too early runs the risk of premature speculation, as was the case with Multan Sultans which I believe was created before their official announcement. That being said, what's done is already done (for the articles created already). However in the future, I believe we should adhere to reasonable time periods before article creation, as suggested above. Mar4d (talk) 02:05, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
- I think that Squad articles can be created once the teams have submitted their retention list and new teams can be created as soon as the name can be verified from reliable sources such as cricinfo or other news. So said The Great Wiki Lord. (talk) 16:13, 20 October 2017 (UTC)
- When was the retention list submitted this year? And how far in advance of the draft was that? I don't know the answers off the top of my head which is the only reason I ask the question. If it's close then that seems reasonable, although the article should, obviously, reflect that in its introduction.
- I don't see why reliable sources confirming a new team isn't essentially the same thing as an official announcement. I'd be entirely happy with that - it's when things are created based on speculation that I would have more of a problem. Blue Square Thing (talk) 16:31, 20 October 2017 (UTC)
- I agree. But when I created Multan Sultans based on verfied reports from cricinfo I got pushback from M. Biloo. So, I just wanted to clarify that. I agree with you, but you might want to let M.Billoo2000 know that "reliable sources confirming a new team" is the same thing as "an official announcement." No contest from me on that point. So said The Great Wiki Lord. (talk) 18:32, 20 October 2017 (UTC)
- I think this year the retention lists were submitted on 5 October 2017. The draft is just around the corner. Likely this month or next month. So said The Great Wiki Lord. (talk) 21:34, 20 October 2017 (UTC)
- Why you notified me, after when you "So said" above, "Is M. Billo serious? WP:CANVAS and Sarcasm"??? M. Billoo 00:27, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
- The PSL website is saying 10 November for the draft date now. I"m torn slightly here between retention and draft - probably the retention list is a sound idea so long as the article makes sense. For the draft article I think we should make clear that a date has to be fixed as well? Does that sound about right? Blue Square Thing (talk) 06:49, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
- I think we can compromise: Before the draft date is announced information like new signed players may be notable. I think we can include this information in the league season article. On case-by-case basis, it may be necessary, because of a particular notable event related to the draft, to create the article earlier. So said The Great Wiki Lord. (talk) 18:00, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
- That's sensible. I'll try and revise the bullet points above tomorrow perhaps. Blue Square Thing (talk) 18:14, 21 October 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject
[edit]The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.
Portals are being redesigned.
The new design features are being applied to existing portals.
At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.
The discussion about this can be found here.
Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.
Background
[edit]On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.
Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.
So far, 84 editors have joined.
If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.
If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.
Thank you. — The Transhumanist 07:50, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
Lahore Qalandars
[edit]@M.Billoo2000, The Floka, and Mar4d: Hello everyone. I'm not very active in this group but can anyone take some time to update the Lahore Qalandars page? This team have purchased a franchise in the T10 League. This team have also participated previously in the Abu Dhabi T20 Trophy outside of the PSL. It will helpful if some of you do some cross tournament edits. Don't worry I will do it eventually if anyone doesn't but I edit in ALL the franchise leagues around the world and also international cricket, it will lighten my burden. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool
[edit]Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.
We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Project merge proposal
[edit]Hello WP:Pakistan Super League members. During a discussion about creating task forces at the Cricket Project, it has been suggested to merge the various Twenty20 projects into the Cricket Project as task forces, inline with other projects which generally don't have separate WikiProjects for single events. The main benefits of this proposal will be standardising current PSL articles with other cricket articles and increased assistance from the Cricket Project, which has more active members and for which in the long-term a resource library is being constructed. Please leave your comments/views on this proposal below. StickyWicket (talk) 10:18, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
- Pinging A Simple Human, Fade258 and Tahaaleem who along with me seem to be the only active users here. Also pinging Mar4d as the founder of this WikiProject. CreativeNorth (talk) 13:35, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
- Hi AssociateAffiliate and CreativeNorth. I would generally lean against this proposal, unless there is strong support for this latter idea (the task force, that is) and a clear consensus to merge all projects. Cheers, Mar4d (talk) 15:58, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
- I strongly support this, as the PSL and other breakaway cricket project are inventing their own article standards that make them inconsistent with other cricket articles, as well as frequently violating Wikipedia's manual of style, particularly MOS:CONTRAST. Joseph2302 (talk) 16:14, 8 February 2022 (UTC)

MOS:CONTRAST violations
[edit]Multiple articles created in relation to the PSL use headers that violate MOS:CONTRAST. You can't use team colours of red and orange for example, as orange text on red background is too difficult to read, and impossible to read for those with impaired vision. If you're using a light coloured background, use black text, and for a dark coloured background, use white text. Anything else is often too difficult to read, and in violation of Wikipedia's MOS. Joseph2302 (talk) 16:17, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- Done, Being a member of this project I had solved this problem and thank you for pointing out this errors. Fade258 (talk) 16:24, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks. It's not just the PSL project where these problems occur, but I have noticed it a few times on PSL-related articles. But thanks for fixing so quickly. Joseph2302 (talk) 17:22, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
Shall I create past seasons article
[edit]Hello, Placeholders of this WikiProject. Shall I create past seasons article of teams i.e Multan Sultans in 2020? With your permission can I do? Fade258 (talk) 08:07, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Fade258: Hi! Sure, you are most welcome. However, please keep in mind that the separate articles must have sufficient information to stand alone, and do not have WP:C-P and WP:CFORK (as you may know already). Thanks, enjoy! M. Billoo 18:44, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- M.Billoo2000, I will do regarding your statement. Thank you !Fade258 (talk) 01:45, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
About confusion of Sikander Bakht (cricketer) with Sikander Bakht (sports preseneter)
[edit]I've seen many of the editors are Sikander Bakht (cricketer) with Sikander Bakht (sports preseneter) which is one of the presenters of PSL's commentry panel. Sikander Bakht (cricketer) works at Geo News as sports analyst while Sikander Bakht (sports preseneter) works as commentator during many of the domestic tournaments just like National T20 Cup etc. Here is a brief article of Dawn (newspaper) about him [1] which also highligts the same confusion which is being done here also. Should we can't make seperate article for him also supported as "stub-sort" article to avoid this confusion for both Wikipedia readers or outside search engine readers. Please anyone soon reply about my this suggession.Wallu2 (talk) 13:16, 22 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Wallu2:, In my opinion Sikander Bahkt whose name is in 2022 Pakistan Super League#presenter is completely different to this name Sikander Bahkt. Fade258 (talk) 12:50, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
Placeholders
[edit]Hi @Mar4d:, I oppose your edits which you have done recently. In my opinion that is useful in this project. Among the members of this project, who is greatly involved on Pakistan Super League related articles you can promote them in coordinator or vice-coorinator on the basis of their edits where they do on respective PSL articles. This helps to develop motivation to users to promote/create good PSL related articles. If my opinion is wrong then you are free to oppose. Thank you! Fade258 (talk) 14:37, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Fade258. Sure, if you think it serves a purpose, keep it. I just felt it was no longer relevant and seemed like useless promotion, especially since the other two users are no longer active on Wikipedia, and I haven't been very much so myself. If you or others want to put your hand up and take on the Coordinator role, you're most welcome; feel free to update. Mar4d (talk) 14:45, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
- Mar4d, Yes, I am going to remove two users from that placeholders. I will keep updating on this project and PSL related articles and others. Fade258 (talk) 14:48, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources
[edit]I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.
)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.
This is a one time notice and can't be unsubscribed from. Delivered by: MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 16:02, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
Removal of coordinator and vice-coordinator
[edit]Hi everyone, I think that the roles of coordinator and vice-coordinator should be removed as they don’t have a significant role and they have been vacant for a long time now. Unless we can decide what these roles should do and who should be in those roles, these should be removed in my opinion. Hamza Ali Shah Talk 11:44, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
Project-independent quality assessments
[edit]Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class=
parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom
parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Aymatth2 (talk) 20:33, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
