Dealing with the non-IPL seasons [Important]

[edit]

Hello guys. Long days, no see. I, too was personally busy and the coordinators..hmm. Well, not to blame them. WP:IPL runs when the IPL season is on. However, that doesn't mean our special members will be sitting idle. We'll organize a meeting in IRC soon. The topic will be how to make the project active. We'll get a record of each suggestion. The lead coordinator, Vibhijain, will personally give you the details. I hope I am clear. From the founder, @DipankanUpgraded! Tag me! 08:39, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Agree with that. We need to deal with this as fast as we can. ♛♚★Vaibhav Jain★♚♛ Talk Email 08:42, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Tendulkar's 200th test match

[edit]

Hello! Sachin Tendulkar's 200th and last test match scheduled on Nov 14-18 brings his retirement from all types of cricket forms. I am extremely bad with cricket and hence would request you all to take to editing the article, general cleanups and then add more about this match. Scheduled at home-ground Wankhede, the event is going to be a huge one and with that we can nominate it for WP:In the news to feature on main page. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 12:20, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

[edit]

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject X is live!

[edit]

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

IPL Season Finals

[edit]

Don't you guys think that the finals of each season from now onwards should have a separate article for it? I mean we should mention about the finals in brief in the articles of respective seasons, but shouldn't we make separate articles for the finals for each season? Just like there are separate finals articles for Indian Super League, Hyundai A-League, Major League Soccer etc etc. As I think the respective articles for each IPL season is long enough already. Itz arka (talk) 06:50, 11 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

<IPL Team> in 2017 articles

[edit]

All the team articles have the match result template Template:2017 Indian Premier League Group stage in them, which I don't think is appropriate. All other <Sports Team X> in <Season CCYY> articles I've seen only have the list of matches that the team in question actually took part in, and I think the same should happen here. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

[edit]

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

[edit]

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:42, 30 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A new newsletter directory is out!

[edit]

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

[edit]

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Project merge proposal

[edit]

Hello WP:Indian Premier League members. During a discussion about creating task forces at the Cricket Project, it has been suggested to merge the various Twenty20 projects into the Cricket Project as task forces, inline with other projects which generally don't have separate WikiProjects for single events. The main benefits of this proposal will be standardising current IPL articles with other cricket articles and increased assistance from the Cricket Project, which has more active members and for which in the long-term a resource library is being constructed. Please leave your comments/views on this proposal below. StickyWicket (talk) 10:23, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion about this project at WT:CRIC

[edit]

There is a discussion at WikiProject Cricket about this WikiProject. Clog Wolf Howl 04:33, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This discussion mentioned standardisation. I've started to standardise some of the tabular information - in particular stopping tables forcing the full width of the browser window which is an accessibility nightmare. I'm also removing colours where they show meaning without text, colours that cause accessibility problems, replacing flags with flags and text and simply replacing flags where there's an obvious MOS:FLAGS problem and removing salaries from the squad tables - this is of minor interest in the context of the squad and has little meaning and zero context. This information may have use in the year by year articles, but not in the main articles. Blue Square Thing (talk) 12:44, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Unnecessary information in IPL articles

[edit]

Hi. Articles are getting added a lot of unnecessary information and lots of empty tables. I am trying to revert back for pages related to Sunrisers Hyderabad but this is not being done in many other team article season pages. Administrator staff doesn't need to have every name on the support staff including Photographer, Video manager, Content writer, etc., And also in the name of the source, people are just adding team websites which doesn't even have this information. Adding team website doesn't mean that it is a proper source. It should contain the information for which you are citing as reference. And also empty tables are being added for kit sponsors. These can be added once the proper sponsors are announced. Or if they are already announced, add them with proper sources. Hope these would be taken care for the other articles. SaGa (talk) 17:52, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. I'm going further and removing more non-notable and non-staff members - a brand ambassador, for example, is not a staff member. Blue Square Thing (talk) 12:45, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Blue Square Thing: and @Sagavaj:, I agreed you both. Yes, you are free to remove such unnecessary information from that respective articles where as I also checking all the IPL related articles which was created fromm since 2008 for correction. Thank you ! Fade258 (talk) 13:56, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Flags

[edit]

One of the things I've been doing when I've worked through the teams articles is to replace the flagon templates being used with the relevant cricket template, eg {{cr|AUS}}. These display the flag and the name and link to the cricket team. It is NOT OK to link to, for example, India itself as the flagicon does - this is a clear and obvious WP:OLINK issue. The flagicon template also uses just the flag - which from an accessibility point of view is utterly unacceptable.

It would seem that all of the seasons articles also use the flagicon template for flags. Quite why they do this I have no idea, and whoever initially had the idea of doing this needs to be sent to sit on the naughty step - it's a spectacularly bad idea. So, all of the seasons articles need editing to get rid of this. Anyone fancy giving me a hand? Thanks.

At the same time, flags are only appropriate for players. They simply aren't appropriate at all for support staff or coaches and need to be removed from any tables with them in. Blue Square Thing (talk) 19:32, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I agree your opinion BST, I will look into it. Thank you ! Fade258 (talk) 02:26, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Auction details table in IPL team season pages

[edit]

Hi. I want to know the opinion on keeping/removing auction details table in IPL season pages. I see that it's being removed recently in Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2022 season page. I would like to compare that with the transfer details page in any football related season page and if it is relevant in those pages, how this would be irrelevant in the IPL season pages? The table gives additional information like how many matches he played before coming to this new team and for which team he played before along with the auction details like base-price and final auctioned-price which also gives an idea on how the owners are strategizing their auctions. It is being followed in all Sunrisers' season pages edited by me including Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2018 which is a good-article and didn't get any negative feedback on this table until now. I think it should be better to add those but if it is considered as unnecessary, I would be happy not to add again. Hope some consensus can be reached here. Thanks. SaGa (talk) 20:37, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

What does it add? It confused the hell out of me, which is why I removed it. Cricket, even IPL cricket, is a very different sport with regard to player movements than football. I mean, really, really different. The key detail is already on the page - the table was just padding. Blue Square Thing (talk) 20:44, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it does. This is stats cruft and not useful information. It would be better dealt with as referenced prose. Blue Square Thing (talk) 20:50, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I would agree with that if someone is actually writing prose to any of these season articles but none of them have any prose. SaGa (talk) 20:51, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's the problem. Write some. If you ping me I'll check for any written English errors if you think that's likely to be problem, although your written English here looks at least as good as mine :-) Blue Square Thing (talk) 20:53, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I used to write it before but I am not a full-time editor (which I am guessing might be true for many people). And hence also the reason why I edit only articles of the teams I follow to an extent which my time permits. And also, I agree that cricket is a different sport but IPL has all it's ideology taken from American sports including NFL and considering the change in the sport with franchise cricket dominating more compared to any international tours, I would say that these rules should also be changed. This is my two cents on this topic. SaGa (talk) 20:59, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly I'd argue very strongly indeed that in global terms franchise cricket does not dominate in comparison with international cricket, but there you go. Players go on international duty first in almost every case. What may be true in the Indian television market really isn't true of most of the world imo.
Now, if you want to look at American sports then an article such as 2021 Detroit Tigers season shows a way to do roster moves - and MLB clubs have much bigger rosters than an IPL side. You'll notice that every single transaction in the bullet lists has at least one reference associated with it. The same, or similar, is true of 2021 Los Angeles Rams season - a table is used there in the sort of way that could be adopted, but there is also basic prose associated with it. Either of those approaches work for me.
In terms of the table I removed, I have no idea what the Capped/Uncapped column even means by the way. And, fwiw, no one outside of India really has any idea what a lakh is - and I can't quite understand why the salary on the player list is in crore (the same applies to this btw - no one has a clue) but on the transaction list was in lakh. It seems very odd. Blue Square Thing (talk) 15:44, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
