Kayaking articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the Kayaking articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Automated process for article tagging and/or assessing
I would like to submit a request to have DodoBot tag and/or automatically assess articles for our WikiProject, as explained here. Feel free to raise any questions or concerns regarding this suggestion. I will assume there is consensus for the task if there are no objections in a week.Jamesmcmahon0 (talk) 20:11, 13 June 2013 (UTC)
- Realised that DodoBot is inactive so I would like to submit a request to AnomieBOT instead. I will ask for all pages in the following categories to be tagged with {{WikiProject Kayaking}}
- Category:Canoeing and kayaking and all sub-categories except; Category:Canoeists, Category:Kayakers and Category:Canoe clubs
- Category:Canoeists With Importance=Mid
- Category:Kayakers With Importance=Mid
- Category:Canoe clubs With Importance=Mid
- I will also ask for it to replace any template redirects, such as {{Kayaking}} or {{Kayak}} with {{WikiProject Kayaking}}.

Kayak roll article
Our Kayak roll article has been a source of great debate having changed names to "Eskimo roll" and back again. There used to be some detailed content describing different styles of roll but all that has been done away with and we now only have two lines of text and two images. This doesn't tell anybody very much.
We also have an article on C-to-C roll which states that it is "one of the most commonly taught whitewater kayak rolls". It claims to be the invention of one "Mick Mouse" and quotes his own website as a reference. The problem is that the C-to-C roll is unknown in the UK, and I'm not really sure how it differs from the conventional "screw roll" (not much as far as I can tell).
What I intend to do is to create a small section for each type of roll on the "Kayak roll" page, eg: srew role, reverse screw, Pawlata, Steyr, hand roll and any others that I can find references for and either have a separate section for the C-to-C roll or include it in with the screw roll if it proves to be the same thing. I then propose to merge the "CtoC roll" article with "Kayak roll" as it is poorly referenced and doesn't seem to warrant a stand-alone article, since no other types of roll have one to themselves.
Your comments will be greatly appreciated. Alansplodge (talk) 15:43, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
- I agree, the Kayak roll article is ridiculously sparse at the moment, I think once sections and some more info has been added then it will be appropriate to look at merging C-to-C roll into it. As for the name of the article, I think the actual content is more important and is not so much an issue, especially if there are already redirects in place. Jamesmcmahon0 (talk) 21:09, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
- I've removed most of the stuff in the C-to-C article - the material that was really about kayak rolls in general and the BLP violating stuff - no sources at all for the former, Mouse himself the only source for the latter. I'd say merge now. You can build up the article with {{empty section}} templates if it's going to be filled soon. Dougweller (talk) 14:18, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
- I just expanded kayak roll from one source, still needs lots more and more sources. I also tagged the merge, haven't done it though. Jamesmcmahon0 (talk) 17:15, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks everyone. I may have time to look at it over the weekend. Alansplodge (talk) 12:11, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Changing page names of Canoeists
Some of the articles on Canoeists for some reason are titled NAME (Canoer) as opposed to NAME (Canoeist). I propose that we ask a bot to change the names from Canoer to Canoeist, to improve consistency. This will be around 200 pages Jamesmcmahon0 (talk) 16:12, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
Having looked a little deeper into this, there are 290 pages that have 'Canoer' in the title and 42 pages that have 'Canoeist' in the title, there doesn't appear to be a convention or rule that applies to this at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (sportspeople). I think we should vote/discuss here which to use then work with that. Jamesmcmahon0 (talk) 16:59, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
- Support Canoeist - It seems to be more widely used on the web[1] and especially in the news[2]. Jamesmcmahon0 (talk) 16:59, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
- Support Canoeist - As Walter said to Donny- "The preferred nomenclature is Canoeist." ;) Elmmapleoakpine (talk) 00:47, 7 September 2013 (UTC)
- Support Canoeist - While I personally prefer the term canoer, canoeist appears to be the more widely-used term. Chris Troutman (talk) 02:38, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
- Is there an ENGVAR difference? If so some national biog cats could be left, or standardized the other way. It seems odd that the "minority" term has currently so many more articles using it. Johnbod (talk) 13:42, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
- "Canoeist" is standard in the UK - "canoer" is rarely heard AFAIK. Alansplodge (talk) 08:36, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
I have started moving pages manually, see the canoer list. Jamesmcmahon0 (talk) 13:30, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
- Seems a good idea. You probably know this already but can use intitle search to check. In ictu oculi (talk) 00:18, 25 September 2013 (UTC)
- Cheers, I used the list compare function in AWB. One thing I am noticing is that every article I change seems to start with 'NAME was/is a canoer...' that's going to be another job in itself to re-word all articles that are written like that. Jamesmcmahon0 (talk) 10:28, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

Redesign of Template:Canoeing and kayaking
The template Canoeing and kayaking is currently very large, containing lots of red-links, some very arbitrary links and is altogether not very useful for navigating around Canoeing and Kayaking content. I don't really know the policy and standard form for Navboxes or how to go about planning the redesign, we maybe should use Template:Canoeing and kayaking/sandbox? I would be grateful for any suggestions! Jamesmcmahon0 (talk) 12:20, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
- In general, it is not necessary to remove all red links in a navigation topic - if they are very significant (but fewer is better unless the template has all members of a closed class). However I couldn't find any obvious meaning on google for Kayak Walk, the first one I tried. My guess is a competitive event with both race walking and kayaking but maybe a type of hiking mixed with recreational kayaking? Some trimming of items may be good here. Rmhermen (talk) 15:50, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
- The sections Associations and National bodies are really the same thing but both should really be removed (I think) since they both seem to have a very arbitrary set of assciations and national bodies, there is obviously not enough space in the box to have all of the national bodies/associations on it.
- Further the 'notable clubs' ... not really sure what makes any of them particularly notable other than they have a wikipedia article
- Suppliers again is only contains an arbitrary subset of all kayking suppliers.
- @Rmhermen: what's the best way to structure this discussion? Jamesmcmahon0 (talk) 18:50, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
- Made a start, see Template:Canoeing and kayaking/sandbox so far I've cut out a lot of stuff that I thought was unnecessary and tidied up one of the sections. Please edit away or let me know what you think should be included. Jamesmcmahon0 (talk) 01:28, 27 December 2013 (UTC)
- I have been more brutal and removed all of the references to competition. We probably need to create a new page as a hub for the competitive side of things and offer a single link to it in the template. --GhostInTheMachine (talk) 12:59, 27 December 2013 (UTC)

Canoe organization category
I removed the category Canoe organizations from Boy Scouts of America but had the edit reverted. I had assumed that the category is for organisations that administer/regulate the sport? BSoA may encourage canoeing but I don't see the article belonging to the category. Comments? --GhostInTheMachine (talk) 02:48, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
Removed Chestnut Canoe Company and Canadian Canoe Museum too. Are there enough canoe museums in the world to justify a category? --GhostInTheMachine (talk) 02:48, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
- Added 2 museums with articles to the outline. (There is another in Portland.) --GhostInTheMachine (talk) 03:42, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
Should we rename the category to Canoe sports bodies? --GhostInTheMachine (talk) 02:48, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
- I would not have thought that 'Canoe organizations' was at all ambiguous. Also I would not expect to find Boy Scouts of America in it. Not sure Canoe sports bodies helps much. Perhaps it could be changed to Canoe(ing) governing bodies I've started a topic on the talk page; Talk:Boy_Scouts_of_America#Remove_Category:Canoe_organizations. Jamesmcmahon0 (talk) 13:12, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
The article Stanley whitewater canoeing course has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- It is not a 'whitewater course' just a section of the river Tay which is used by paddlers a lot, there are no fixed slalom gates or any other competitive aspects. Whilst I think an article probably could exist, this one has biased, unsourced and sometimes incorrect information and the name is also misleading. I think the best course of action is to delete it and start again.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.Jamesmcmahon0 (talk) 12:51, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!
Hello everyone!
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Name of this WikiProject?
Could and should this project be renamed WikiProject Canoeing and Kayaking, or even WikiProject Canoeing, to better match the stated aim of improving Wikipedia's coverage of Kayaking, Kayaks, Canoeing, and Canoes?
In terms of sports, the International Canoe Federation administers both canoeing and kayaking. The current project name seems too specific for something that's covering both types of paddling. -- Ham105 (talk) 04:05, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
- I would be in favour of changing to WikiProject Canoeing and Kayaking with redirects from WikiProject Kayaking and WikiProject Canoeing etc. I agree the current name could create confusion as to the scope of the project. Jamesmcmahon0 (talk) 15:54, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
Canoeist or Canoer
Should Biographies be titled, Name (canoeist) or Name (canoer)? As currently pages are titled both. GhostOrchid35 (talk) 06:59, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
- I did a quick Google: canoeist says 399,000 results; canoer says 188,000 results. While by no means compelling, I'd go with canoeist. -- Ham105 (talk) 08:29, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
- Is there any sign of WP:ENGVAR differences in the Ghits? Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 09:07, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
- This has made me do some digging, but I'm glad because I'd forgotten about the tool. Here are some results for usage of canoeist and canoer from Google Books Ngram viewer for both American and British English - in both cases canoeist seems to have been used more often:
- American English - since the end of WW2, canoeist seems to appear at least five times as often.
- British English - since the end of WW2, canoeist seems to appear at least seven times as often (although intriguingly for brief period between 1931 and 1941, canoer was more commonly used - but it's ahead for only one decade out of the 130-odd years to the year 2000).
- So I think canoeist would be the more commonly used term in general use. If other editors have thoughts on this, I'd be interested. -- Ham105 (talk) 11:17, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

A new newsletter directory is out!
A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool
Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.
We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
