Description

A WikiProject to encompass all of Women's sports and Sportswomen, and sharing articles predominately about women in gender neutral sports with the relevant WikiProject for that sport.

The article Women's sport is a prime example of why we need a project focused on Women's sport.

Women's sport at the Olympics is a brand new stub, and shows the potential of this topical area. There has been a lot of activity around Wikipedia:WikiProject Netball as a result of the Netball good article reviews, and Women's football task force is another strength area.

Laura has started identifying existing GA and FAs in the scope of this proposed project. User:LauraHale/Good Topic

Hello Everybody, Bonjour à toutes les sportives, I will to support this proposition with my heart. There is so much to make to value the women in sports ( Read Women remain under-represented in sports leadership roles and Equality in sports? Women aren't there yet. How would the project handle sports that have large male, female and coeducational components: would they be included or excluded from the scope? For example, would women's running be within the project? Racepacket (talk) 00:03, 27 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think running would fall under 'gender neutral sports' as described in the intro.
It is interesting to note that running only mentions gender once, and only in the context of running speeds. This WikiProject would not have an interest in general articles like that; as you can see on Talk:Running, it already has quite a few WikiProjects associated with it.
I don't think women's running is going to be a high priority of this proposed WikiProject; there are a lot lower fruits to be found. However if someone could present a case for an article dedicated to women's running that isn't a topic fork of running, it would be in scope of this WikiProject, along with other WikiProjects such as WikiProject Athletics and WikiProject Running. I've had an idea brewing for an article on women's athletics for some time (inspired by a French equivalent). It's a topic which has repeatedly recurred in my studies of athletics, the Olympics and sport in general. My desire to expand upon women's sports is there, but frankly my knowledge is not quite there yet. The current main article (women's sports) captures the basic elements of the modern developments but almost entirely misses the vast cultural implications of women's sports.

There are a whole string of articles missing on this topic (even the Women's Tennis Association governs a completely unlinked and non-existent article), but it is also a topic that desperately needs expert attention. Women's basketball is a large article, but a largely unrefined and superficial one. Hopefully a project can help resolve such problems. SFB 20:45, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bonjour SFB, yes it's difficult to write a quality page on Wikipedia because there is a difficulty finding references: the information sources (books, newspapers, magazines) speak about many men's sports (players, clubs, leagues and competitions) and we haven't not many references for women's sports, unless being itself involved in a sport (or a feminine league) or have access to women players. There are a couple of issues facing women's sports getting GA. With netball, there have been some implied issues with source reliability. This is two fold in that there aren't many sources for women only sports and some of the regions being written about do not have a strong history of publishing high quality content. Some of the writing is just very informal. It would be great to see some institutional support from a university to support this endeavour in terms of providing access to large amounts of library book and journal materials, access to databases, etc. (One of the reasons I'm going to New Zealand is to try to find source material related to the women's sport topic I'm writing about.) --LauraHale (talk) 20:02, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

User:LauraHale/Women's Sport Wikiproject is my personal staging area for the Women's Sport Wikiproject and Task Force. It hasn't begun yet by me as I'm still drafting the pages. (I'm in New Zealand until May 3/4 and on a netbook so I don't have easy ability to edit the multiple pages needed.) My opinion on this: I agree that this is a notable topic area that can use some work. However, as some mentioned above, the sourcing is a problem. Some sports have predominantly male participants and lacks a authoritative body to recognize female participants and also the relatively lack of participants. This results in less reliable source.

This is not just the problem of Wikipedia but also in sport bodies as well. The "relatively" lack of elite sportswomen and a history of world championship is the reason why IOC did not add women ski jump until now. I still have concerns about POV-pushing and the desirability of splintering coverage of sports that have widespread participation by both men and women, such as running. Would these efforts be better allocated toward working within the existing sport wikiprojects to improve coverage rather than as a parallel effort that competes for resources and generates coordination problems in terms of templates, infoboxes, etc. Racepacket (talk) 09:19, 7 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I believe personally that the women have to have their specific sporting wikiproject because their conditions are very differents. The women and the sports performance have had a long, uneasy history together. Women were not allowed to participate in a marathon until the mid-1980s (they could not run an Olympic race of more than 200 metres until the 1960s) because the men who ran sport figured it might mess with the organs they needed for reproduction (same situation in olympic ski jump).--Charlesquebec (talk) 17:41, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Racepacket, I hope that today you will testify of the civility not to erase my intervention (references 1 , 2 ). I have been having a problem with your opinion. By examining attentively the reflection of Racepacket, I wish to testify of my personal defeat (un échec qui fait mal en dedans de soi) to bring the WikiProject Ice Hockey to become even more opened and more collaborative with the women hockey. My participation in the wikiProject Ice Hockey indicated me that it is very difficult to value the women sport in a project grouping together the male and feminine sports (including participation by both men and women within the existing hockey wikiproject). In last Winter (2010-11), I was the only woman contributor in the WikiProject Ice Hockey and my interactions were excellante with some male members (Maple Leaf, Marc87, Tiouic and Jayen466) who they worked on the Women Hockey. But the general climat was not easy for me. My solution was to have a small space for the Women Hockey by presenting the project of a women's hockey task force. When I presented my proposition for a women's hockey task force, 2 administrators (Djsasso and Maxim) did not support my proposition and there was no consensus between the members of the WikiProject Ice Hockey archives 44: Women's Hockey task force. After I removed my proposition. Thus there was no setting up nevertheless the made work ( User:Genevieve2/sandbox05, User:Genevieve2/sandbox0345). I was very disappointed: This is a Man's world that for only the men ice hockey or not 3??? Now You will understand my justifiable doubt in front of the intervention of Racepacket. Recent studies on Wikipedia show a constant decline with the participation of the women contributors 4 5 6. That will be the future for the women contributors in sport wikiprojects ??????????? ...
