Under the new Copyright rules, copyright has now expired on Australian published artistic works such as novels and poetry where:

  • if published anonymously before 1 January, 1955.
  • if author is known, author died before 1 January, 1955.

It is therefore safe to freely reproduce such works in Wikipedia. Otherwise, be aware of copyright restrictions and responsibilities.

Icon for WikiProject Literature

I notice we are using a Basketball for the icon for the WikiProject Literature (see above box),which is also being used by Wikipedia:WikiProject_Australian_basketball, shouldnt we being something that is book related instead such as a book icon to avoid confusion

I've removed the ugly green banner. I believe I've updated the {{WP Australia}} to support the literature-importance= attribute, and categorise on both importance and class (based on the Australian assessment).   • you need to use the 'edit' option for the whole 'to do' box (top right in the border of the box) or just go straight to the page (Wikipedia:WikiProject Australian literature/to do) & edit it
  • for people who know stuff about these things: i assume it comes up with those "no such section" messages when you try editing within the 'to do' box because it's transcluded. is there any way to fix this? & also how do we stop it displaying the section headings in the main toc, as that's not too useful?
  • above is a minor issue. can we have a list of the setup jobs that still need doing?  ⇒ bsnowball  11:11, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fantasy / Science Fiction - Works in Progress

Just wondering how to know if a author is still classed as Australian. Found a article for Tom Arden and while editing it noticed from a link that he has lived in Ireland and England since 1990. So does that still keep him in the Australian Project ? Not sure on his current citizenship, so I put a note about it in Info Box anyway. Boylo 03:01, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure why its posted as lit=yes again (as i see baby Baby ifritah altered it and then reverted it later), as thats doesnt work for me and its all a bit confusing as to what is correct to place. But in the end i decided this is what i would post to pages, with class and importance included for later ease in rating. Am surprised at your ' Whatever ', as this question Fred has asked is the same as i asked awhile back on baby_ifritah's page, and in which you later told her revert it back to 'lit=yes ' and not to use 'literature', so its wasnt only him confused. What i was saying was to show that correct template info box on the main page for WikiProject Australian Literature page, so we would have the information showing in how to do it correctly (which is how i have seen it showing on other Project Pages), ' not on article pages '. Those that attract neither Novelist/Poet tag exclusively

Anyone for an Authors list on the project page? I can think of a number of Australian writers who have published in a number of genres (so to speak) who would (if they were still alive) would have been known as author rather than novelist or poet exclusively. Shantaram

I just found some interesting news, that the author of Shantaram, (Gregory David Roberts) is now engaged to Princess Françoise Sturdza of Switzerland and they plan to marry soon, so have posted it on the feature for him. Portal Created - The Three Worlds Cycle

I have just started a Portal:The_Three_Worlds_Cycle to try and get this large series of books better organized. Many links have been created by previous contributors with character names, locations, worlds, items and novels etc. As most of the information is mostly stubs and plot summaries, its best and try get this working better by using a Portal. So any suggestions or help is appreciated, as there is much to do. I will contact the fan forum and mention the Portal exists as it seems they maybe the ones doing most of the contributions, so now they will have a way of keeping it all better organized. Tom Champion deletion review

Hi, the page for emerging Australia author Tom Champion was deleted for reasons of notability.. by a Welsh woman User:Deb. I was wondering if it could be reviewed. Tom Champion is part of a literary family of D'Arcy Niland, Ruth Park, Kilmeny Niland, Deborah Niland and Rafe Champion, and I feel his upcoming first book release is relevant to Australian literature. The article was cited and sourced, and I just want to make sure everything's correct, I already wrote to Deb and she ignored me. So any help that could be provided would be greatly appreciated. Excellent ancestry but I feel that until he's established a reputation in his own right, a whole article is not really justified. (I haven't seen the deleted article though so am just going on what I understand to be the case). However, since his father has an article perhaps a sentence (or even para if there's enough substance) referring to his upcoming book could be entered there (he is already listed there as a son) and be expanded into a Main Article if and when he makes his mark?Sterry2607 (talk) 22:22, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Miles Franklin Award

Over the past year or so I've been working towards building a page for each author who has won this award. That process is now complete. I did a bit of the work but have to thank a number of other contributors to the cause - even if they didn't know there was one. This now leaves a number of things that need to be attended to on this page; namely pages for each of the winning novels and pages for each of the shortlisted authors.

My question is: should we add the missing authors to the Australian Literature WikiProject page, or just leave them as they lie?

My reading plans for this year may deal with a few of the Miles Frank Award winning novels and I'll create pages for them as I go, but I probably won't get to the bulk of them until 2009.Perry Middlemiss (talk) 05:01, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Didn't take long for me to change my mind. I've started adding in skeleton pages for each of the missing Miles Franklin Award winners, starting from the second TO THE ISLANDS, as the first, VOSS, was already there. I've taken a leaf out of the Booker prize-winning novels pages and added a box showing the previous and next MF Award winners in the sequence. While these pages will take a while to build up I thought it best to lay down the framework first. I'd appreciate it if people could help me defend them against deletion if that looks imminent. Australian Novels in a Year

I am aware of the category which lists novels published in a certain year, but this does not differentiate Australian novels from any others. Is it worthwhile to create a category which will do just that? Perry Middlemiss (talk) 06:15, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    • If we were to build categories to include novels for each decade we might get a better idea of how many novels we're talking about - I'm thinking somewhere in the vicinity of 500. The main aim of this classification would be to allow for a view of the development of the Australian novel over time.       • One of my pet projects is the years in Australia series - eg 1908 in Australia . In that article you will see under Arts and Literature there are links to Maurice Guest and We of the Never Never. There is also Category:1908 in Australia which doesn't include the novels and is pretty underpopulated. perhaps working with the year in Australia articles and categories would be a start and would not be something you need to back out of. I would suggest that Australian books of a particular year would need to be a sub cat of that year in Australia anyway.--Matilda talk 22:48, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Australia literature

"Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in" typically is used to notify Wikipedians who live in a particular geographic location that someone wants a photo taken in the location. However, Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Australia literature seems to be addressed to Wikipedian's who appear in Australia literature. If you look at Special pages, you'll see that "Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Australia literature" doesn't really fit with the other categories. Any suggestions? I think being a subcat of Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Australia is fine. More speficity is required than just Australian pitcutres required given the size of this sub-category and its links to this wikiproject. Novels banner

I noted the request to remove this project from the Novels project banner. I am currently in the process of updating that banner myself. I certainly could remove it, or, alternately, if you want, set it up to allow assessment for this project, the Novels project, and the Australia project, if you would prefer that. Ascribed identities

Archie Weller and few others have had their status as to whether if they write about marginality and the characters in social margins whether they actually are specifically of the same identity - I have removed one ascribed aspect of his identity from the lead sentence of the article about him - however I will leave it to the collective wisdom of the lit project as to whether such an identity is in fact correct even if in fact it isnt - if you follow me - cheers SatuSuro 09:35, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Given the number of children's and YA books coming out of Australia over the past few years I'd agree with this. Trouble is, you need someone to write the piece. Mavens of Australian literature may care to take a look at this article. Wongar has been accused of being a literary hoaxer,[2][3][4] and cultural appropriator along the lines of Ern Malley and Helen Dimidenko/Darville/Dale[5].

The article, which was created and edited by WP:Spas, paints the subject in a more favorable way than most mainstream commentators do. The central issue is doubt about sources. The article is mostly sourced to Wongar himself and to credulous journalists who believed what Wongar had told them and in many cases showed little indication of fact-checking his claims. In view of Wongar's practices, one wonders how much these sources can be trusted. There is not too much independent material that has the mark of a hard-nosed and skeptical professional historian; everything else seems questionable.

What is established objectively is that Wongar published several books on Australian topics which have been much commented on. Hoax literature is a notable sub-field in Australia, and Wongar, a prominent contributor, certainly deserves an article. I tried to add balancing material but it was reverted by an spa[6]. This BLP has been extensively edited by sock puppets, mostly IPs who show apparent COI (see talk). I think that after semi-protecting the Wongar BLP, it should be stubbified and rewritten with sources independent of Wongar. User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments are used by Wikipedia editors to rate the quality of articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project decides to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
