Family name infobox
Shouldn't the finder be set to _suffix_, as the family name is usually the last part of the article name? Chris 18:38, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- That sounds a very useful option, but is there a wiki function that does it? - Fayenatic (talk) 18:45, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- I don't know how to do this. The first name is the best I could come up with. Remember (talk) 14:28, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
Infobox
I don't understand the infoboxes. What is the heading Region supposed to represent, and the heading Origin. For the examples on the project page you've got for the name William: Region Germanic languages, Origin Germanic. And for Smith: Region Anglo-Saxon language, Origin Anglo-Saxon.
What are you trying to show to the reader? Wouldn't it be more clear to show the country or area the name originated from and then the language it was derived from? So... for Smith: Origin-England, Derived from-Old English. So, area and language. The way it looks now is you've got the region as a vague language and the origin the same vague language.--Celtus (talk) 06:33, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
- I agree with the suggestion. Feel free to change it. Remember (talk) 22:33, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
Templates Surname and Given Name revisions
I have made a few revisions to {{surname}} and {{given name}}
- added the WP Anthroponymy icon to each
- replaced Template Given name code with revised version of Template Surname code
- recategorized each template out of Category:Disambiguation and redirection templates and into a newly created category Category:WikiProject Anthroponymy templates
It would be helpful for you to indicated whether you agree or disagree with these revisions. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 13:55, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- I like it. Keep up the good work!Remember (talk) 03:39, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
New template: R from given name
I have created the template Template:R from given name as a symmetrical companion to Template:R from surname. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 17:49, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
Templates being discussed at WikiProject Disambiguation
See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Disambiguation#variant templates for a consideration of {{surname}} and {{given name}} lumped together with {{hndis}} and other "variants vs. {{disambig}}". I and User:JHunterJ have provided comments that state these templates are not part of the WikiProject Disambiguation template set and that they have nothing to do with disambiguation. This seems to be a perennial issue that comes back from time to time. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 23:46, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
Revision to "Surname" template
User:16@r recently made a revision to Template:Surname (diff). An edit summary was added to one of the two consecutive edits stating "optional parameter nationality", but nothing was stated on the template talk page about the change. I have asked at User talk:16@r that they say something on the template talk page about the change. If nothing is forthcoming in a matter of days, I will (unless there is objection here) revert the change on the basis of its having not been discussed prior to implementation. I do not mean to be protective of the template, but such a heavily used template should have some discussion before adding features, I think. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 00:42, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
Image
This project uses an image which is a Wiktionary logo image copyrighted for WikiMedia and not related to this project, and it's used as a logo by some Wiktionaries. I tried to browse Commons to look for a new image for this project, but what kind of image would you like? Here's a signature image which I could edit to be more square. Best regards Rhanyeia♥♫ 09:03, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
- Just a quick note, you can make an image square by changing the size of it in the
|px
parameter by adding 2 variables. for example, adding|20x20px
will make the image square 20 by 20 pixels. -- penubag (talk) 02:49, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

- I thought your suggestion was quite interesting; however, it appears that imposing a square parameter pair does not either crop the image nor distort it into a forced square, as illustrated at right. Am I missing something in applying this parameter?--User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 03:00, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
- Having a look at Wikipedia:Extended image syntax it should work. -- penubag (talk) 03:07, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

- Whatever new logo/image is selected should also appear on the currently logoless Wikipedia:WikiProject Anthroponymy#WikiProject participant template. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:40, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
- I am not sure what the problem is here. Is it that we are not allowed to use the current logo because it is reserved for use by WikiMedia? That seems to go against the GFDL and related licensing schemes that underlie most all of what we do here. Could Rhanyeia point to the information that indicates we cannot use the logo here? --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 00:51, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
- Regardless of whether we can use this logo, we should probably come up with a logo of our own. I just grabbed the current one just to have something, but it doesn't really fit what we do. Any suggestions for a different logo would be appreciated. Maybe the signature of "John Smith" (since this is perceived to be the most popular name. Remember (talk) 13:23, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

I like the current project logo, "Scrabble tiles" in various languages. If we can't retain it, then consider an unreadable signature, such as the WP 'Edit toolbar signature icon', with maybe a beige background instead of blue. ...Or a portion of Jimbo's signature. --Rosiestep (talk) 23:46, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
- It's not licenced under GFDL but still it's not illegal to use it here, but I think not very good either because this project doesn't relate to Wiktionary. The idea of an unreadable signature sounds good, and I left a message to Penubag if he would be interested in trying to make a signature image. Best regards Rhanyeia♥♫ 08:26, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Implementation: Userbox
Compare {{Participant WP Anthroponymy}} to {{User Wikiproject Anthroponymy}}. I chose to create a new template which can be deleted and the revisions migrated into the main existing template. If the new-disposable template is acceptable in form, the in-use template can be revised to match. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 04:29, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Implementation: WP Banner
Compere {{Anthroponymy}} to {{Anthroponymy v2}}. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 04:46, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- I like the old one for being demonstrably multilingual, which is good from the angle of equalities and diversity. However, the new one is evidently about human names, whereas the old one could suggest languages, alphabets etc. It makes sense to use the new "signature" logo consistently in the project, so let's change the banner to use it. - Fayenatic (talk) 14:44, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
- It looks good and there seems to be no opposition to this image, I'll edit after some days unless someone else is faster than me to do it. :) Best regards Rhanyeia♥♫ 09:07, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
