Error message
[edit]@Nick Number: Over the past week, on clicking "View Clip" after saving, the clipped article appears for a second and is then replaced by the message, "This page is not available. This page is pending publication, has been removed or moved to a new location." However, this does not prevent the URL from being converted to WP format where it works fine. DMBanks1 (talk) 15:07, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- @DMBanks1: I've been getting that too. It has been slightly annoying (especially when citing more than usual for the Reliability drive), but clicking the bookmarklet does make it go away, so I've mostly been ignoring it. Nick Number (talk) 16:30, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- I'm having the same issue with clippings, and it is very annoying. Nick Number, can you explain what you mean by "clicking the bookmarklet"? Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 22:07, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
- Just adding a +1 to this thread, the site loads correctly but every search results in "There was a problem loading the search results. Please try again. If the problem persists, please contact us." I've deleted all OCLC cookies, all Newspapers.com cookies, even the Wikipedia Library cookies. (Nick Number) -- Zanimum (talk) 23:50, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
- I'm also getting the search results error in the last couple hours. This seems to happen periodically and usually resolves within a few hours. The clipping problem has been persistent for at least a week now. Jweiss11 (talk) 23:55, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
- I'm getting both of the errors described in this thread as well. Chrome and Firefox, both mobile and desktop.
- @Jweiss11: see here for details about the bookmarklet that Nick Number created. Tl;dr: create a bookmark and paste the following code in the URL field:
javascript:var url = window.location.toString();var newurl = url.replace('www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org', 'www.newspapers.com');var newurl = newurl.replace('access-newspaperarchive-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org', 'newspaperarchive.com');window.location = newurl;
- When you have a clipped article open, click on the bookmark and it will convert the long URL to the shorter URL (which doesn't give the error message). Pi.1415926535 (talk) 00:07, 30 June 2024 (UTC)
- I've posted a similar bookmarklet at The Wikipedia Library for toggling between Newspapers.com and OCLC versions of pages. Nick Number (talk) 17:51, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

[edit]@Nick Number: Loading error message appearing on sign in page today. Are you having the same problem? DMBanks1 (talk) 14:33, 4 July 2024 (UTC)
- @DMBanks1: Yes, I'm getting "There was an error while loading the form. Please contact customer support". Nick Number (talk) 15:49, 4 July 2024 (UTC)
- I see that error when I load the login page. If I then still enter my U/P and press enter, it additionally gives the error:
"There was a problem verifying you are not a robot. Please try again or refresh the page."
PK-WIKI (talk) 21:01, 5 July 2024 (UTC)- Sign in on OCLC is still not working, coming up on a month later now. PK-WIKI (talk) 21:36, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
- Worse, deleting cookies fixes nothing Mach61 17:19, 6 July 2024 (UTC)

- Ever since we had to start using this through the Wikipedia Library, it seems like there is always some sort of problem. When we could just go on Newspapers.com directly, I don't recall having any issues. Just a thought. Thanks, ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 18:20, 4 July 2024 (UTC)
- Have the same issue too. Tried deleting cookies. It didn’t help. Phatblackmama (talk) 22:35, 4 July 2024 (UTC)
- After trying all yesterday, I started again over 3 hours ago but no luck. I'm wondering if the access through Wiki has been permanently withdrawn. DMBanks1 (talk) 15:46, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
- Given that:
- Many of the recurring issues, including this one, seem to be with their bot-detection system, and of them seem to be with the OCLC proxy system.
- The OCLC proxy system is presumably used by other institutional customers (libraries etc) who are likely a substantial portion of their customer base, and
- Wikipedia Library access is probably a very small percentage of their traffic (i.e, no strong incentive to frustrate us into becoming individual paying users), and may well function as a loss leader because clips we make are linked from a popular public website
- Sending Wikipedia Library traffic through their existing OCLC proxy is likely much simpler for them than having to individually activate free accounts as was previously done
- I would tend to suspect that this is not a deliberate attempt by the site to exclude us. More likely it is one or more of:
- They're having larger problems with the OCLC proxy system as a whole and customer support is already up to their ears
- Because Wikipedia Library users have different characteristics than a typical institutional customer (more spread out in geography and time zone versus a city or university library's users would be, for example), they may be more likely to trigger the bot-detection systems
- As a relatively minor customer, Wikipedia Library may not be a high priority for support, especially if unique fixes are needed
- While the frequent interruptions are frustrating, and I hope Wikipedia Library staff are able to work with Newspapers.com to fix these issues, I doubt this is deliberate malice. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 20:18, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
- 1415926535, I agree with your assessment, but this is pretty annoying. Jweiss11 (talk) 13:54, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
- Apologies for intruding on this conversation, but has there been any updates about this? When I log into the Wikipedia Library, it still says that access to Newspapers.com is temporarily unavailable and I get a "T322916" error. Aoba47 (talk) 16:48, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Pi.1415926535: Since you have a better grasp of the issue than most, when do you expect the clipping function to be restored? Should we be assuming it is not imminent. I was two clippings away from doing a substantial article update 9 days ago. Should we just be publishing article changes with the newspaper citations but no clippings? Cloudflare error signing in to Newspapers.com without proxy
[edit]After several months without access to Newspapers.com or the Wikipedia proxy, I went back to try.
I notice there's a new Cloudflare checkbox / CAPTCHA on the login page of the no-proxy https://www.newspapers.com/
Verify you are human — Cloudflare
Checking the checkbox, I get the errors:
Error — Having trouble? Send Feedback
We were unable to verify your browser. Please contact customer support
Trying to log in via the proxy site, I don't see the Cloudflare checkbox but do immediately see the error:
There was an error while loading the form. Please contact customer support
Is anyone else experiencing this Cloudflare error and is there any solution?
PK-WIKI (talk) 07:20, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- I have not seen the Cloudflare error in awhile. One think would be to toss cookies for oclc.org, newspapers.com, anything wiki* hosts and try again. See https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T322916 for details about wikipedia/newspapers.com issues. A few days ago, I followed the August 14, 2024 instructions about cookies under Firefox on a Mac and just now was able to connect to newspapers.com via https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/partners/26/, noted that I was still logged in to newspapers.com and successfully clip an article. Cxbrx (talk) 12:03, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- When I sign in directly through Newspapers.com, it seems like everything I click on requires Publishers Extra for some reason. When I try to sign in through the Wikipedia Library, it won't let me ("There was an error while loading the form. Please contact customer support") ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 19:04, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- I have had as similar issue that has been going on for MONTHS now. I am no longer able to really use the service. Very frustrating as I used Newspapers.com frequently through the Wikipedia Library when editing articles. -Drown Soda (talk) 01:54, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- @WikiOriginal-9 @Drown Soda I had the same problem. https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T322916#10065665 works for me on Firefox. Good luck. —Bagumba (talk) 14:05, 20 September 2024 (UTC)

- The Cloudflare issue specifically seems to be a problem with Safari (web browser) on macOS. Using Firefox on the same machine does not require the CAPTCHA checkbox. PK-WIKI (talk) 00:28, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
Access is being restored!
[edit]TL;DR: To regain access to Newspapers.com please go to https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/partners/26/ and click Apply. Access requests will be processed and sent to Newspapers.com over the coming weeks.
Newspapers.com have agreed to move back to our old method of granting access, whereby users must first register at Newspapers.com, then apply via The Wikipedia Library, and then accounts are upgraded to a subscribing one by Newspapers.com. We have updated Newspapers.com to accept applications in the library, so you can apply now! This change is unfortunately mutually exclusive with the limited proxy-based access working, so any of the technical workarounds that have been discussed here should no longer work, along with any proxy-based access to Newspapers.com. I hope you agree that this brief bump will be worth it in the long run. As a reminder, this change means that you will need to renew your access on a yearly basis. If you have an email configured in The Wikipedia Library you should receive an email a few weeks before this expiry to remind you to submit an extension request, but brief yearly loss of access may be a side effect of this access method. The good news is that this access method means that you shouldn't encounter any technical problems besides normal operational problems on Newspapers.com's end, which should be few and resolved quickly - otherwise the website should work just as if you were a normal customer.
We are planning to directly notify all users who have used Newspapers.com via the proxy over the past year separately to this announcement.
Thanks may be directed towards @VSj (WMF), who has been working tirelessly to find a way forward with Newspapers.com :) Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 16:03, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
- Cannot say enough about how grateful myself and others are for the work you and others have done in getting this restored @Samwalton9 (WMF)! Hey man im josh (talk) 18:34, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
- That is so fantastic. My best to all. I know it was very hard, and believe me I think we all appreciate the effort involved to get it back online. Coretheapple (talk) 19:20, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
- Oh good, it was better the old way. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 20:16, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
- True, but at least now we're getting access. I had no idea how much I'd relied on this source. ProQuest just doesn't have the same array of regional newspapers. Coretheapple (talk) 17:35, 30 September 2024 (UTC)
Access issue
[edit]I have access through the Library, but I can't access anything without paying. I've gone through 100 newspapers now, and all of them say to "Upgrade to a Publisher Extra Subscription to view this page". Is this just an error, or am I doing something wrong? SirMemeGod 14:09, 30 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Sir MemeGod Your application has been approved on our end but, per the email you should have received, "You can expect to receive access details within a week or two once it has been processed". As far as I'm aware we're still waiting on Newspapers.com to do the necessary setup on their end. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 14:34, 30 September 2024 (UTC)
- Ah, okay. I was a bit confused, but that clears it up. Thanks for getting back so fast! :) SirMemeGod 14:46, 30 September 2024 (UTC)
- I received an email on September 29 that said I should receive access details in one to two weeks but haven't received the email yet. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 01:35, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
