Minneapolis History edit-a-thon

We invite the Minnesota Wikipedia community and local historians to edit entries in Wikipedia on Minneapolis history. Please help us increase the depth of information on Minneapolis history topics by utilizing materials in the Minneapolis Collection. Find your own Minneapolis History topics to edit or work from a list developed by Special Collections Librarians.

Yes there is WiFi, as somebody from Special Collections has informed me, and they encourage editors to bring tablets or laptops; there will also be six public computers. —innotata 22:48, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Wow, missed this. We won't be able to get out word about this on the wiki, as early as for past events; should this should be rescheduled? (I'll contact HCLschlubb, and post where other Minnesota Wikipedians will notice.) I haven't been in touch with them myself (I'm a New Yorker), but I do know they've been publicizing the date to their own community already: Minneapolis History Wikipedia edit-a-thon. Also, you might want to consider a partial focus on women's history in Minneapolis for this, as part of the WikiWomen's History Month campaign.--Pharos (talk) 18:53, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I saw the Tumblr post after noticing this. I see you e-mailed Jonathunder, who got the word out on events in the past. I don't think we can count on regional editors being aware of the event as for past events, particularly on any of the editors who would be especially interested, such as others who attended past events, being able to come on such short notice. —innotata 18:58, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Great to hear this! Please let me know also how I can help. As gender gap fellow I'm hoping that these events will not only help to improve women's history subjects on any Wikipedia, but, will also be a tool for women to participate in the events. I'd love to also work with you to promote Wikipedia:Teahouse to new users, so they can receive online support after the event. Please let me know how I can help! Thanks for organizing this, and thanks again to the library staff who were helpful in finding materials. I almost felt like a kid in a candy store with so much material and so little time to use it all. I found the newspaper clippings helpful, along with National Register nomination forms for historic properties in Minneapolis. A huge thanks to the staff for the terriffic help (and for letting us skirt the rules a bit to bring donuts). I didn't know about the clippings files, but I can see how helpful they can be. If you ever need help with an image, lots of us have experience. Great American Wiknic for Minnesota in June

Where: Minnehaha Park, near the Falls

It's rather late now; I don't think I can help, since I assume we need park reservations—if we want to be sure of a table and a shelter, it costs $70 in St. Paul[2] and >$100 in Minneapolis[3] (last time we got a spot without a shelter at Wabun and it rained) and the suburbs I checked. Any suggestions, anyone able to organise? Should we set a date, say July 8, and post it? —innotata 20:09, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
I don't think you really need a reservation and a shelter; you can just set it for a Saturday, and move it to Sunday in case of rain contingency.--Pharos (talk) 01:13, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
Yes, that's fine with me, though last year it was pretty clear that's what the other editors expected. There are other reasons I'm not so sure about the idea, but anyway, since nobody else's stepped up: how about Minnehaha Park again (I can't think of a better spot), a spot near the Falls found and marked out on the day (so in regards to previous expectations, maybe a table and grill), 1–4, Jul 7, and Jul 8 as a rain date? Wha' happened? I had it on my calendar for July 8 (although I hadn't signed up because I had to wait to see if my schedule would be clear on that day). I was looking forward to meeting some folk before going to the Wikipedia conference in DC in July. Oh well..Is anyone from here going to the DC event, or been to one previously? It would be nice to talk to someone about it before I go. Wiki loves libraries 2012

As part of the national Wiki Loves Libraries initiative, there will be an event at Special Collections at Minneapolis Central Library. The event will include an editathon, to increase the depth of information on Minneapolis history topics by utilizing materials in the Minneapolis Collection. Wikipedians and other members of the public are welcome to come in and create Wikipedia entries on subjects/people which we have archival/manuscript collections on or to work on Minneapolis history topics/people they are personally interested in. There will be a short instruction session in the beginning of the day and a tour of Special Collections in the morning and afternoon.

There is free wifi (so participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops/devices) as well as several public computers.

Yes, it must be fine to set a date, I'd think. You were talking about other possible events, including a tour. The Wiki Loves Libraries page and talk page have some ideas. How about working in a planned intro to editing Wikipedia of some sort? (It didn't take long to explain the resources at the last event; some users should be able to do this.) The national event is about engagement with libraries and readers, we could spread word wider (tell people at other libraries?, any other ideas?), and use it to tell people about Wikipedia, and discuss researching articles and such aspects of working on Wikipedia. The section of the WLL page suggests pretty involved activities, we could go for modest versions; these discussions have happened anyway at most meetups with a very few people, but we could add a structured event or two for this occasion. —innotata 03:13, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Review of event

We had a good turnout, I suppose, of people new to Wikipedia, and just jumped into editing without much else (besides chatting). We worked on articles from a list based off that last time (HCLschlubb plans on posting it), and created Young-Quinlan Building, Clara Ueland, Forum Cafeteria (Minneapolis), Band Box Diner, and Northwestern National Life Building, among others. Someone from MNopedia suggested we have events at the History Center this winter—perhaps a Wikipedia Day meetup and an editathon later. —innotata 23:13, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Where do I go to get rid of this notice?

I've hidden it several times. I thought I had my preferences set up to not show these in the first place. Spring Editathon at MHS

Just to let people know, at the the recent events editors and Mhsrc and others from the Minnesota Historical Society been discussing having an editathon at the Minnesota History Center library, during the next month (possibly March 16). It might be good to start discussing an agenda; the editathon part won't be so easy to organise as the Special Collections events, since the library isn't based on topic files. Mcghiever and I are both interested in running a suggested more formal introduction to Wikipedia. —innotata 19:07, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

We at MNopedia and the Minnesota Historical Society are still very excited about having an editathon in 2013. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like March won't work after all. March is a busy time of year behind the scenes, and an editathon requires a lot of coordination with different departments. Fall 2013 is looking better. June and July Meet-Ups

I will not be able to attend the either of these events, as I have a a coffee shop that I have to tend to during this time. More frequent events?

I've been thinking for a while of having more frequent meetup events, perhaps monthly. With more small events, more Wikipedians can come to some of them. I'd like to have more in-person editing events, given how enjoyable an productive the editathons at Minneapolis Central Library were like. We'll also be able to point people interested in Wikipedia to something regular they can go to.

The main problem is finding a time and convenient place to meet. If we want to have public computers available and a good space, I think that limits us to a few library locations. The people at Special Collections at Minneapolis Central who organised the past events are interested, but they are only open weekdays and first and third Saturdays. I'm not certain I can make any of these days in April or May myself. Any ideas for other locations for these events, and anyone else interested in organising them?

I like this idea. I don't know whether there would be much interest in this from non-Wikipedians or regular editors, but I think it would be worthwhile even if participation was low. I could make time to be at a library once a month. Gobōnobō + c 22:08, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Let's try this out. I suggest 1 June and 6 July, at Minneapolis Central. The Special Collections librarians expect any Saturdays they are open this summer will work, May and 3 August won't work for me. Once we pick exact dates and times (they're open 10-4:30, how about 12:30 to 2:30 + however long we want to stick around?) they can be put on the library calendar. —innotata 05:11, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

January 12, 2013 (Saturday): Join the Minnesota Historical Society for a Wikipedia Day meetup. Come hang out at MHS, grab free lunch at the Cafe, enjoy a behind-the-scenes exhibit tour, and join us for a short discussion about possible future MHS/Wikipedia collaborations.

As the first of what are intended to be monthly meetups, there will be two events at Hennepin County Library Special Collections this summer. These are mostly planned as opportunities for Wikipedians to discuss editing, but all are welcome! Free wifi and several public computers are available, and the Special Collections contains many valuable historical resources, including the Minneapolis Collection, consisting of files on hundreds of topics related to Minneapolis from neighborhoods to politicians. I'd like to encourage folks to look at the possibility of an informal Wikimedia User Group for Minnesota editors, which should make it easier to get Wikimedia Foundation grant funding for outreach events, and could even lead to an eventual nonprofit chapter like Wikimedia DC. I've just moved back to Little Canada from California, and I'm wondering if there'd be any interest in holding an edit-a-thon at either the Roseville or Maplewood public library - I'm closer to Maplewood, but I'd be happy to take the extra few minutes to Roseville if that's more convenient for people. We could also chit-chat about starting a mailing list or some other form of off-wiki organization, and I'd be available (as ever) for technical questions (wearing my WMF engineer hat). I'm definitely interested, however, I use public transit (like a lot of past meetup attendees), so Maplewood is much too far, and Roseville would work, but could involve walking a long way. Offer of scholarship for your group's representative to attend WikiConference

I am writing to invite participants in your user group to WikiConference North America to be held in San Diego Friday to Monday 7-10 October. Here are further details:

  • We are accepting submissions until 31 August.
  • We are accepting scholarship applications 9 August - 23 August. About 40 scholarships are available only for people in Canada, the US, and Mexico. Last year about 200 people applied for scholarships.
  • More volunteers are needed. In the usual wiki-way, anyone may comment on program submissions. At the conference in person, all conference organizers will be volunteers. All conference attendees are encouraged check in with conference organizers about volunteering for the task queue even for an hour. Anyone interested may contact Flonight and Rosiestep to offer volunteer support.
  • Major sponsorship for the conference comes from the San Diego Public Library who are providing the venue and a grant from the Wikimedia Foundation.
  • This is the third year of this conference, with WikiConference USA being in New York in 2014 and in Washington DC in 2015. Check the schedules of those for examples of what kinds of programming will be offered this year.

This year, conference organizers have been able to reserve one scholarship to attend for someone in your organization. I encourage participants in your organization to start a conversation among yourselves about who is available and interested to attend the conference as a representative of your collective interests. Sunday evening works for me but something closer to southwest Minneapolis/Edina would be a better location for Janice Lurie. I love Anchor Fish and Chips but Northeast will be packed because of ArtAWhirl. Barnes and Nobles in Edina is open until 9 PM and has a good restaurant/coffee bar with wifi. Open to whatever works. According to the Minneapolis Institute of Art website, their library is not open on Sundays and the museum closes at 5 p.m. Perhaps someone has connections to MIA or MCAD and can ask about special arrangements. Jonathunder (talk) 14:49, 12 May 2018 (UTC)

Some of us in the Wikimedia Minnesota User Group (WikiMUG) have discussed having an informal gathering in a public place on Saturday, January 19 in celebration of Wikipedia Day. To get the discussion started, I propose it be in St. Paul or Minneapolis on the light rail line starting at 7 p.m. Looking for suggestions as to a place we could have a birthday cake. Make new friends, have fun, and learn something new, while celebrating Women’s History Month through our Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon.

Art+Feminism is an international campaign where people come together to improve coverage of women and the arts on Wikipedia. During the Edit-a-thon, we will be updating and creating Wikipedia articles on subjects related to gender, art, and feminism, with a focus on artists represented in Mia’s collection.

No Wikipedia experience necessary; 20 minutes training session at 12:15 p.m. for event newcomers. Library resources will be on hand. Bring your laptop, power cord, and ideas for articles. Features light refreshments.
