IMDB as a source?
[edit]Please see Wikipedia talk:Identifying reliable sources#IMDB as a source? for a discussion about establishing a policy, guideline or central discussion on IMDB. Maurreen (talk) 03:40, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

IMDb Event?
[edit]The IMDb has tons of events listed [1], so should these be made to work in the template? Sure would come in handy for awards programs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.194.66.47 (talk) 22:16, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
IMDb Season?
[edit]There are numerous articles on specific seasons of various TV shows, but most if not all have an external link that points to the show entry for the entire series. Worthwhile or is there another way to link to a season? --SCalhotrod (Talk) ☮ღ☺ 16:45, 5 November 2014 (UTC)
I am proposing here
[edit]…for discussion, @Maurreen:@NapoliRoma:, the removal of just the one template that allows easy linking to IMDB biographies. Reasoning: These are inappropriate personal, self-published information sources, rather than valid, WP:VERIFY-approved, independent, referreed/edited, and formally published sources of biographical information. We need to make the poorest manners of WP writing less easy to accomplish, not easier. Cheers. Le Prof 50.129.227.141 (talk) 14:08, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
Why imdbname?
[edit]Why do we allow [[imdbname:...]] as an interwiki link. Doesn't this just encourage the use of IMDb as an inappropriate external link? WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 12:33, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
- I just noticed an article attempting to include such an external link inline, and was wondering the same... V2Blast (talk) 22:32, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
- I'm seeing this, too, for linking in filmographies to titles that do not have an article with [[imdbtitle:...]]. Is this okay or should this be discouraged/avoided or prohibited, but allowed for use in External links sections? – 108.56.139.120 (talk) 22:33, 4 February 2021 (UTC)
IMDB as an identifier in citations
[edit]I'd like to use IMDb links as an identifier in citations of films and television episodes. To be clear, the citation is the film itself, not IMDb. See this working example:
{{cite episode | people=Lynch, Jeffrey (director); Collier, Jonathan (writer)|title=Raging Abe Simpson and his grumbling grandson in 'The curse of the Flying Hellfish' | date=April 28, 1996 | series=The Simpsons | network=[[Fox Broadcasting Company|Fox]] | season=7 | number=22}} [[IMDb (identifier)|IMDb]]:[https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0778451/ tt0778451]
Lynch, Jeffrey (director); Collier, Jonathan (writer) (April 28, 1996). "Raging Abe Simpson and his grumbling grandson in 'The curse of the Flying Hellfish'". The Simpsons. Season 7. Episode 22. Fox. IMDb:tt0778451
I just created Template:IMDb ID, so now this is also a working example:
{{cite episode | people=Lynch, Jeffrey (director); Collier, Jonathan (writer)|title=Raging Abe Simpson and his grumbling grandson in 'The curse of the Flying Hellfish' | date=April 28, 1996 | series=The Simpsons | network=[[Fox Broadcasting Company|Fox]] | season=7 | number=22}} {{IMDb ID|tt0778451}}
I hope to soon use replace the above with this non-working example:
{{cite episode | people=Lynch, Jeffrey (director); Collier, Jonathan (writer)|title=Raging Abe Simpson and his grumbling grandson in 'The curse of the Flying Hellfish' | date=April 28, 1996 | series=The Simpsons | network=[[Fox Broadcasting Company|Fox]] | season=7 | number=22 | id={{IMDb ID|tt0778451}}}}
Lynch, Jeffrey (director); Collier, Jonathan (writer) (April 28, 1996). "Raging Abe Simpson and his grumbling grandson in 'The curse of the Flying Hellfish'". The Simpsons. Season 7. Episode 22. Fox.
The last example doesn't work yet because Template:Cite episode currently silently ignores |id=
Questions:
- How do you feel about exposing IMDb as an identifier to readers in citations? I know of no other identifier for most television episodes. I think the above examples are clear in communicating to the reader that the episode is being cited, not IMDb.
- Template:IMDb ID accepts any IMDb entity type. This is intentional, because otherwise I feel that further qualification would be needed in the identifier label, eg. IMDb title ID:0778451 instead of IMDb:tt0778451
- Template:IMDb ID accepts identifiers with the type prefix (eg. "nm", "tt"). All existing templates use just the numeric portion. Is that confusing for editors? I could split it like
{{IMDb ID|tt|0778451}}
instead of{{IMDb ID|tt0778451}}
- Template:IMDb ID accepts any IMDb entity type, including personal names, titles, companies, events, etc. thanks to Wikidata External ID redirector. With some effort, that programming logic could be included in this template instead of using Wikidata External ID redirector at all. I think moving the logic to the template would be better, but probably wouldn't prioritize it. Are other editors okay with using this tool for now?
