Problem of non-uniform die-roll sums
[edit]Currently, this game has players roll two dice and add the two rolls together to find the number of the link to add. Problem is, this is much more likely to generate numbers near the middle of the possible range than those at the high or low ends (per the central limit theorem), as there are a lot more ways of getting a midrange number than a very high or low one when rolling two dice. For instance, the probability of getting a 7 is equal to the probabilites of getting a 2, a 3, an 11, or a 12 combined, as there are six different ways to get a 7 (1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2, 6+1), but only one way each to get a 2 (1+1) or a 12 (6+6), and two ways each to get a 3 (1+2, 2+1) or an 11 (5+6, 6+5). In addition to dice, random.org also offers a random-integer generator, which is not susceptible to this midrange-clustering effect; setting this generator to a minimum of 1 or 2 and a maximum of 12 would produce a truly-random selection of integers not exceeding 12. Should we switch this game over to using the random-integer generator (and note the "Dice Association" name as being an artifact of the prior method of number generation)? - But then it wouldn't be Dice per say. Perhaps, seeing as games are popping up everywhere, do "interger" association? Difficultly north (talk) The artist formerly known as Simply south 13:40, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
