Hello
[edit]Hi,
I'm bobrayner, and I'll be your online ambassador. If you need any help - particularly with the technical side of improving an article, or with wikipedia's rules and norms - just ask. My talkpage is always open.
Have fun; bobrayner (talk) 16:18, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia Awards
[edit]A number of articles from Wikipedia's Education Program have won internal Wikipedia awards, including a number from our Canadian program. We encourage all students to nominate their articles, if they feel comfortable doing so. For more information about the awards, feel free to contact your professor, a campus ambassador or one of the coordinators of the Canadian Education Program.
- en.wikipedia has a hierarchy of article ratings, ranging from "Stub" to "Featured article". It's explained here. Personally, I prefer to work near the bottom of the quality ladder :-) but with a great deal of effort, it is possible to climb a few rungs up the ladder (if there are enough sources to support it). The A/B/C classes are often overlooked but I think that they are a good target to aim for, especially if you only have limited time in your class (it can take a while to get a Good Article through review) bobrayner (talk) 21:55, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
A first attempt
[edit]Hi, This is Jess and Cara trying our first "talk" post, just to see how it works. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by WetCar (talk • contribs) 01:37, 16 October 2012 (UTC)
Hey, Levi here. Just another initial talk post. Does anyone know if there are specific set dates for each of the steps listed on the main page? I am not sure if I am totally on the right track with everything we're supposed to do for this assignment. In the first class was there any discussion about expected length of our article postings, or is a lot of our mark going towards peer editing and stuff?
- Hello!
- Well, I can't help with dates - that's a question for your tutor. However, you seem to be doing OK with talkpages. If you have any specific articles that you're going to be editing, it would be very helpful to post that list here. Remember, on "talk" pages it's a good idea to sign your comments, by putting four tildes ~~~~ at the end. You don't have to do that when you're editing an actual article though. bobrayner (talk) 13:45, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
There aren't specific dates for the steps, Levi. I'll just keep prompting you folks, saying "Well, by now you should have....." usually on our Moodle site. Put something up on your sandbox and see what it looks like. Penny Powers (talk) 22:33, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
- If you're also coordinating things on Moodle, would it be possible to let me see that? Thanks... bobrayner (talk) 13:55, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
-- Thanks for the help Bob BrLamb (talk) 20:25, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Bob, I don't think I can add anyone to our Moodle page unless they are a student or faculty. But I don't think it would help you any. I'm not doing any coordination there. We talk about this in class, however. This coming Friday our two campus ambassadors are going to show students (and me) how to create links and references. What we need is one sandbox associated with this course site that all students can use to upload their first attempts at their section of the article. I have told students to upload something (anything!) to their own sandboxes associated with their account, and then play with it. Try to make a heading. Try to change the text. Play with the formatting. I'm going to try that myself, now that I'm back from a week in Vancouver. Penny Powers (talk) 22:22, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- OK; that all sounds good. Links and headings especially; feel free to experiment with other stuff in your sandbox. bobrayner (talk) 22:39, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Hey, everyone. I posted this on my talk page too, but I thought here I'd get an answer sooner perhaps. How do we reference in our articles? I have used the templates but it is still coming up with an error. Any thoughts? VanJoyGer (talk) 23:17, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
VanJoyGer, you need to get in touch with one of our campus ambassadors to walk you through this step by step. Do that on their talk page or through Moodle. Penny Powers (talk) 20:27, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
- It's fixed now. The finer points of citation templates can be a bit difficult to figure out; but errors like that are a positive sign - it shows that you've already started providing inline cites for the content that you're writing! bobrayner (talk) 01:09, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
Sandbox pages
[edit]Hi all, have people been creating their sandbox pages? Maybe we can list them somewhere here? If people need help, let me know. BrLamb (talk) 20:25, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Here's a link to my Sandbox page. You can access yours by logging in, and clicking the "Create a sandbox" (or "My sandbox") link on the top right of the Wikipedia page. BrLamb (talk) 20:55, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Every student should have a sandbox created now. Brian you can see a list of students accounts above and you can click on each student user page and "watch" the sandbox, and the talk page, too, if you want. Penny Powers (talk) 19:50, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
