Montenegro

I don't think they should be changed yet. The blank maps are used mostly to show data, and since Montenegro is so new, almost all available data is about Serbia and Montenegro, not Serbia or Montenegro individually. SCHZMO ✍ 18:54, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

1985 Outline Map VS 'Cold War' Map

I've noticed that the map in the 'Cold War' article does not align with the blank map of 1985. (If one aligns the Mexican-American borders of either map together, the borders of Eurasia, Africa, Oceania are off by one pixel to the left.) Suggestions for a map

I would like to create a distribution map for the Cane Toad article, which includes its native and introduced ranges. I tried the blank world map (with no borders) on this page, however it does not include most of the Pacific islands, which are very important as they are mostly where the Cane Toad has been introduced. Well, it is better, but it still doesn't include Hawaii, which is an important one. The Oceania map wouldn't work, as I need to colour it in, and it needs to include South America (its native range). Thanks --liquidGhoul 12:29, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Map requests

I've got two problems:

a.) I'd require a map similar to Image:BlankMap-World-v4.png, but having dots for all dependencies (i.e. all territories with ISO 3166-1 codes)... Anyone up to it?
b.) How will we go about updating all maps of the world and Europe with Montenegro (and soon, Kosovo)? I wouldn't know how to add the Montenegrin (and Kosovar) borders by hand correctly into existing maps... And recolouring all maps from a few updated blank maps would be a *lot* of work... Ideas?

For a) the WWI and WWII maps could be used as a starting point since they have alot of detail on small islands. b) Its easy to copy paste an updated section onto a old map - you wouldnt have to recolour them all! I have done similar things to this before --Astrokey44 15:30, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Basically, take a look at User:Nightstallion/dependencies and add little dots for all the dependencies on the list. It's gonna be difficult in the Caribbean, though, as there are many countries and little room... —Nightstallion (?) 13:25, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

How about this? - Image:BlankMap-World-v6.png i think i got all the ones listed, used one dot for the US minor outlying islands which have the same iso code. there are two one pixel dots on cyprus for the british territory - any larger wouldve messed up the island. SVG Germanies

I've just checked the #4 map -- it's got *part* of Kashmir (the Indian-Chinese dispute) marked as a disputed territory, but no other disputed territories are marked; both Kosovo and Vojvodina are incorrectly marked as being separate from Serbia; and in general, I'd *strongly* mistrust that map. —Nightstallion (?) 08:59, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Object divisions

Are there any SVG maps that have the objects divided politically? i.e. An island which is territory of Canada would be the same object as the rest of Canada (for example). I checked all the existing ones and I don't think there are any. If not, anyone else think it might be a good idea to have one? Request for large Europe map

I have a request for a map similar to Image:BlankMap-Europe-v4.png - but with a much higher resolution (more like the resolution of Image:EurovisionParticipants.png; something like 1200x1000). Can anyone generate one? Preferably in png or svg format. See, I want a map similar to the Eurovision one, but which shows North Africa also.

Following on from that, I think it might be a good idea if we had one, huge, super-high-resolution blank map of the entire world. Then people could simply cut sections out of it to use for whatever purpose they wished. The current world maps we have here are far too low-resolution. Can anyone help? Thanks. I tried to use Inkscape to chop and resize Image:BlankMap-World4.svg - but for some reason the program won't do this extremely simple task; instead, it tries to make things incredibly complicated. It's full of objects and layers, and won't simply allow me to cut out the section I require and then resize it to the resolution I want! Seems like a simple request, yes? But no.. the program is geared towards much more complex things, and makes it obscure how to do simple things. Can anyone guide me? Thanks. EuroSong ^talk 23:01, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Use the rectangle tool to make a rectangle selecting the area you want. Then select both the rectangle and the map object and use one of the options in the ... 'Paths' menu, I think. You probably want exclusion or something, not difference. ¦ Reisio 20:31, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

While the svg maps can be scaled they still have detail going only upto a point, plus the ones of the world we have right now are grossly inacurrate. Moreover, if I'm making a map I chose to deal with the much simpler png exclusively, and I'm sure many people agree. It was added that svg is better than png, but Im not sure this is true for world maps. svg files are much larger - the basic svg blank map is 80kb which still is not as accurate as the 28kb png image, while the other svg files are 2.5 megabytes! --Astrokey44 11:46, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

A lot of the filesize can be reduced by properly saving them - some of the ones listed were saved with support for various proprietary editor stuff left in, which takes up a lot of space. ¦ Reisio 03:16, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Inkscape gives the option to save as 'Inkscape SVG' or 'Simple SVG' - other than that, there's the manual way. :p ¦ Reisio 10:33, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

the png maps are more easy to update and to read, and alot of the time all that is required is a simple world map for marking a location or countries, rather than a huge filesize svg. My computer has trouble downloading and scrolling along this map for instance, and also I cant open it in photoshop, trying GIMP only brings up a blank blue screen, and it has trouble scrolling in inkscape. I agree that svg is better for small maps, but a world map is really complex and is more user friendly in png --Astrokey44 12:32, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

This is true - SVG reading and editing programs (including popular browsers) are in their infancy. The state of traditional graphics editing programs that are used to raster images can be even worse (GIMP, for example, just essentially takes a snapshot of the image and then lets you edit that raster picture). Inkspace is pretty decent as far as the user interface, but unfortunately creates quite large images. That all said, SVG is the way of the future, and the software will continue to improve. For now folks can choose what format they want - if they don't get enough detail from the PNG, they can choose SVG, but it's important that they are aware of the SVG format so we minimize the number of images we have like this Brianski 10:14, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

You shouldnt really be upscaling any map which shows coastlines - either bitmap or vector. Coastlines arent like a simple curve which can be graphed with an equation - such as in diagrams where there is an advantage of using vectors. Trying to scale up vector coastlines just means you have simple shapes with details missing, see this map derived from the svg - coastlines dont have sharp edges! svg is therefore inaccurate, while png is accurate to the scale which it tries to depict. --Astrokey44 08:56, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Mh. Well the thing is, as far as I know the only really accurate vector data we have is from the CIA. That's one source and a rather inflexible one. It should be fine for basic land mass outlines and even simple national boundaries, but not much more. ¦ Reisio 13:46, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

I think we need to remain with png until vector graphics become a bit more main-stream and more people & software will support editing them. Historical map request (in SVG format)

Is there anyone who can convert the blank world maps of WWI and WWII from PNG format to SVG? At the moment, I'm interested in making a blank SVG map of Africa in the early 20th century to give the locations of various European colonies: at the moment these maps are only done with modern borders, although I found one map for German East Africa, but that could be better. My attempts to come up with a good quality Africa SVG map using Image:BlankMap-World-WWI.PNG didn't come out too well. Can anyone help? - 52 Pickup 14:35, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Im not convinced that SVG is better for such things. Firstly because I tried making a historical svg map in Inkscape of Africa, and it seemed really difficult to do the simple task of joining Ethiopia and Eritrea, which would have taken a few seconds as a png. And Secondly, because coastlines can not be shown properly as vectors, see this image --Astrokey44 04:36, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

That's a ridiculous comparison, if you zoomed in that much with png it would end up as three or four pixels, at least with that you see what is meant to be the coast and what is meant to be the water, instead of gradually colour-shifting boxes. And Ethiopia and Eritrea can be joined easy enough using the "Path" menu tools in Inkscape. +Hexagon1 ^(t) 06:20, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Alright I have tried again and joined them by deleting alot of points.. But why should vectors be used on a map which is made up of mostly non-geometrical shapes? (coastlines). It would be like making a vector image of a Mandelbrot set. Size is also a factor over the internet - the SVG is 2,158kb compared to a 49kb PNG world map. --Astrokey44 11:49, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

The svg is displayed as a png for users, and the svg has many additional features (it acts similar to a photoshop file, with layers and such). But I wouldn't use svg much myself for maps, which is why I opposed it in the discussion far above. Greater Somalia

I would strongly suggest that if this is done that it be renamed to something else entirely and that Image:BlankMap-World-detailed.png be kept as is, as we use internationally-recognized boundaries on Wikipedia map projects. (Also this request isn't made for any other world map that shows the same boundaries for Somalia, curiously). This could be a very difficult task, as there is no real recognized boundaries for Greater Somalia (compare the map and flag on the article for starters). Of course, I still prefer maps are done with my Image:BlankMap-World6.svg but that's just me.  ;) I'm curious what the map is needed for, I can't think of a reason that a world map needs Greater Somalia boundaries, but a regional map might be much more appropriate. --Canuckguy 14:59, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Duplicate ID

Hey, I am using the BlankMap-World6.svg and I am just using some code to parse it at the minute. I am curious to know if any of the countries are repeated in the image as there are some duplicate IDs in there. Example: id="ag" and id="AG". Any ideas? 129.234.4.1 14:37, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

All the small countries have duplicated tags in such way. As mentioned on the talk page of the map, "AG" would be the actual land of Antigua and Barbuda on the map, whereas "ag" would be use to select its "circle", seen on the "small country circles" layer (initially set to 100% transparency to make it conform to other maps' looks.) --Canuckguy 23:12, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Just a little small request. Doesn anyone have or maybe could create a blank map of Sweden in high resolution. I need a good map for use on location of sports team in league articles. Hello. Another map request

Could someone make a map similar to Image:Yugo template.png? An editor of Hungarian Wikipedia told me he needs a map similar to this, but one that doesn't include Slovenia, Macedonia and Kosovo, but includes only Croatia, Serbia (without Kosovo), Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina; and without the inner borders between the countries.

That's beautiful! The color is good; if it isn't difficult to do, a blue outline would be nice (say double or triple the weight of the river lines, and maybe the color of the lake water), as the park is literally defined by a blue line. Help create a manual of style for maps and diagrams

Right now it seems that Wikipedia provides no guidance on the best practices for creating maps and diagrams. These types of images are rapidly proliferating on Wikipedia. In fact, the Wikimedia Foundation has just started a grant program to pay illustrators to add new diagrams to articles in need. It would be nice if most of these additions followed similar styles and conventions instead of continually reinventing the wheel (with various degrees of success). Although I don't believe Wikipedia needs to enforce one particular style on all maps and diagram, there are some helpful conventions that I think we should put into writing somewhere. Wikipedia:Image use policy doesn't seem like the appropriate place for this, so I've decided to be bold and create a proposed Manual of Style page for maps and diagrams. Right now it is mostly blank as I would like to know what suggestions the Wikipedia community has to offer. There is something very similar on Commons (where all good maps should be anyways). However, it doesn't have very good visibility (for one, Commons membership is lower than Wikipedia membership, and the subset of cartographers on Commons is lower still), but all in all there are some good guidelines there too, most of which you cover on your MOS. I would suggest maybe redirecting to that, as it already has a head start on yours and, as I said, needs greater visibility. --Canuckguy 03:25, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Country Key/Legend

Is there any sort of key or legend to the country outlines?

Lake Ladoga on the main map

Hello.

Could I ask a mapping expert to add Lake Ladoga to Image:BlankMap-World6.svg?

I'm in the process of creating a series of "master maps" for World War II representing the political situation at various intervals. Since they're in SVG, it shouldn't be to much effort, once I've done one, to evolve it into the next interval, or modify it specifically for a given scenario. I've almost finished creating a world political map for Sep. 18, 1931 and just noticed that it's missing the above mentioned Lake Ladoga; which I'll be needing to represent Finland's border with the Soviet Union. a little help

Hey folks, I don't know if anyone has time for this, but I'm trying to make a map of Pierce County, Washington. I went through the trouble of downloading Inkscape so I could do SVGs, and am trying to get a map to edit from libremap.org, but i just get weird error screens of code. Reason why the SVG maps won't open up to full size?

Someone has to revert these maps back to the way they were. SVG isn't working, not anymore. Or is it just me?

CHANGE IT BACK! I downloaded an image that wouldn't open in ANYTHING. Change it to a gif of jpg or something a person can actually get to work. Chop chop!

Map Request

Excuse me. Would anyone be troubled too greatly if I requested a world map that included the American and Canadian state/province boundaries? I'm trying to replicate the Timeline-191 maps (without copying the existing ones), so it would be helpful.

PNG is so much simpler.

I think any SVG can be saved to PNG. I used to use non-SVG maps (.gifs and .jpgs actually), but colouring countries like Canada and Russia, and USA, with lots of islands and other areas, got to be a pain, so I looked for a way to colour everythign in one shot, hense my making BlankMap-World6 to make it easier to even colour a few countries. but, as I said, you can probably just save the file as a PNG, I think that will work, but I'm sure I will be corrected if not. --Canuckguy (talk) 17:23, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Preaching to the choir here.  :) That's how I did it for the longest time (with Inkscape), once I got the non-contiguous areas (ie the islands, etc.) connected (again, thorugh Inkscape, knew nothing of scripts when I made the map) so that at least the bucket filling was wasy (one click per country). The map can easily be done with bucketfill in Inkscape as well 9although the end file will be bloated with excess Inkscape code though, which is why revisions to the maps are usually done by script. --Canuckguy (talk) 19:25, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

You're supposed to open the SVG in a text editor, not a graphics editor. You should then be able to easily pick and choose what you want colored and how, if you have any aptitude for text editing. ¦ Reisio (talk) 21:39, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Gray maps with white borders (and white for water)

Well, I finally got completely the wrong idea from one of these maps — thinking something an island that's in fact a peninsula.

We seem to use this style a lot here, despite WikiProject Maps having a much different, and IMO better set of conventions. One could argue that it's easy for anyone to alter our gray/white maps to fit into these conventions, but clearly this is not being done in many places, and it also wouldn't be that hard for us to conform to WikiProject Maps conventions before we place maps here.

Unless there's some sensible opposition, I'll be converting these sort of maps to fit into the aforementioned conventions whenever I come across them (and have some free time :p).

A nice thing to do :-) By the way, is there any way to make a different border width in between countries, and between countries and water in .svg? In fact if you set the maps to the convention colors, borders seem thin. But if you make them thick, coastline for Norway or Greenland becomes a mess. Emilfaro (talk) 02:28, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

On BlankMap-World6.svg I have two different classes for "borders", for islands without borders, a thicker width, and for international borders, a thinner width. This can easily be put in place for any .svg map. --Canuckguy (talk) 14:25, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Wait. English colors have been previously largely critiqued by non-english-wiki cartographers. In short : ink consuming (not print friendly) + chartjunk ; CIA-based (!!!) ; even the former creator of this set (user:Planemad) have himself encourage to leave this CIA based convention for more-thinked ones.

The French Map lab and the German map labs have all discuted the style, and have all agree to use an updated Grey/yellow/blue style. The German map maker are quickly working in this way, as you can see there (de), about 100 countries maps have already be done, while the French have quickly adopted it too, as you can see there (fr).

IMO, yes, new country locator maps should be create, based on BlankMap-World6.svg, and they should be adapted from the most neutral and international style available : the grey/yellow/blue one.

Greater German Reich

I have tried but to no avail to create a world map showing Germany at her greatest extent prior to the establishment of the RSI and Mussolini's downfall.

Does anybody know where to find an svg world map that has provincial/state/territory borders? Congo, Republic of.

I'm looking for some vector/raster data for the republic of Congo. There seems to be alot of data on the other Congo (Democratic Rep. of Congo), but I'm having difficulty locating it for Rep. Congo. Could anyone point me in the right direction or are there existing maps available in this forum? The information is for a school presentation. historical boundaries

It might be nice to have some other blank world maps for different historical times - nineteenth century for instance. I have a wishlist along those lines, as well, but even more generic. IDEALLY, would like a blank world map just marked with significant natural features like rough land or water bodies, since humans settling in those areas try to claim everything between points they can defend. Gist is that historical shifts in national borders seem likely to be in units of such areas, so a world map divided into "defensive units" would be like a kind of graph paper for geographical history. Another Request, but a good one I think

wish I knew how to make it myself but I'd like to see a map that includes both National Subdivisions as well all Colonies and minor states, basically a combination of this [[2]] and this [[3]] much thanks to anyone who can help me with this, basically I need it for a project involving comparison of the old colonial empires to modern day borders, and I think having a map for that very reason could come in handy for Wikipedia. Projection is important

It would be nice to have this list be a sortable table, and have one of the columns be projection because otherwise I have to spend a lot of time hunting for the correct shape or fiddling with warping one of the two maps. UK Boundary Commission Changes

It would be helpful for many if the parliamentary constituency maps were such that they can be used for political projects. Trying to change the colours is not straight-forward, as the svg or png images leave pixels of the old colour in the edges.

Yes. You'll need to click on the maps that you wish to use to see their licensing terms; the three that I looked at were all marked as "public domain" in which case you can do whatever you like with them.
