A curious thing about downvoting a nom
Hi, y'all. I noticed something curious yesterday. Noms that do not receive three net !votes (or any comments) while a 21-day clock is running "time out" and automatically self-destruct. A bot removes them. However, if a nom is on its 20th day of inaction and somebody throws an Oppose !vote, the 21-day clock restarts.
This seems counterproductive to the process. Would the solution be to have a late-breaking Oppose !vote be ignored as far as the 21-day clock goes? It would still count as a downvote but it would not restart the 21-day clock. Let's discuss it.
PS: I feel the 21-day clock should be extended to 31-days as that is about how much time it takes for noms to be properly noticed. Maybe we'all need more reminders to vote on noms? I know I forget to. Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk}

Reasons for opposing a nom
Northamerica1000 just opposed the nomination of several articles I had nominated, saying that the articles were too well developed and that there wasn't enough that needed to be done to fill up a week. I don't understand that. Those articles clearly needed some work, and could have benefited from some additional material. I don't understand leaving fairly well developed articles that have several hundred page views per day in mediocre shape. I don't think the reason that there is not enough work to fill up a week is a good one. So what if it takes only four days to fix it up? Then we will be left with a really good article, making WP look better in the long run. Now, with no chance of their being looked at by editors who are good at copy-editing, fixing references, improving formatting, adding relevant material, and finding good images, it will be a long time before those articles are improved. We're consigning them to indefinite mediocrity. If this topic has already been discussed and consensus reached, I apologize. If not, then I'd like to hear additional opinions. – Corinne (talk) 00:14, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
- No need to apologise, Corinne. In this case I would say the Oppose votes are based on the sheer number of articles on Wikipedia, even those with high page views, that need improvement: TAFI should ideally be both highly visible and of very poor quality, even compared to other articles that need improving. I hope this helps. Thanks, Rubbish computer (HALP!: I dropped the bass?) 10:24, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Corinne: Although it would be nice to improve decent articles on important topics to good or featured article quality, I believe that it would be best to focus on the poor-quality yet important articles first. GA and FA are great, but usability (that means no fluff, POV, or dearth of information) is more valuable. Esquivalience t 02:58, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

Notification subscription improvements
I would like to propose two modifications to the weekly notification delivery system:
- Collapse-box it by default (or have an option to do that). These things are huge and distracting.
- Include a feedback mechanism with options that help TAfI understand what the reactions are to the choices is offers, guiding more productive selections in the future:
- ☐ On it! ☐ Interested ☐ Maybe ☐ Too busy ☐ Too unfamiliar ☐ Too controversial ☐ Not important enough
Honestly, I would have clicked "Not important enough" on probably 70% of the ones I've seen so far; way too many pop-culture topics (actors, songs, foodie trivia, etc.). — SMcCandlish ☺ ☏ ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ᴥⱷʌ≼ 16:45, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- Regarding the first point, adding a collapse button would be fine with me, but I'm not for collapsing the entire template by default. This may reduce participation in the articles, because people won't immediately see the weekly entry. North America1000 20:31, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

Bot failure on WP:TAFINOM
See [1]. There was an entry missing a level-3 heading and one that was lacking a timestamp. In both cases the bot errored out and never processed subsequent entires. I have fixed this, so the bot will continue to process the page in it's entirety. It is possible for the bot to generate a human-readable "report" of any issues it encounters, much like it does for PermClerk, but that seems a bit overboard for this otherwise simple bot task. So just be mindful that if the bot seems to be ignoring a particular nomination, it's probably due to incorrect formatting that the bot is unable to parse. Minimum page views count?
I haven't !voted at WP:TAFINOM until today, but I see there are a lot of very unpopular pages being nominated. I would think popularity would be a driving force; I personally don't feel that compelled to contribute to a week-long effort knowing it's only going to be appreciated by a handful of people daily. There are millions of articles, surely we can find something more worthwhile. Additionally there is a very large backlog of approved articles for improvement that will take nearly 6 years to get through at our current rate, so overall our approval criteria couldn't hurt to be more stringent.
How do you feel about setting a minimum pageviews count? I was thinking at least several hundred views, if not at least a thousand — MusikAnimal talk 05:00, 17 June 2016 (UTC)
- Min pageview per what? Per day? Per month? If per month, maybe. Per day would just be too much. Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 01:32, 18 June 2016 (UTC)
- Per day, the figure we currently put in {{TAFI nom}}. I'm thinking a thousand is too much. It's true that the more visible articles are likely to be more developed. Settling my proposal at a minimum 100 pageviews a day. That can be calculated as the average over the past 20 days or more using the "page views stats" link. At the bottom of the tool it shows the average daily hits. That tool I incidentally wrote; rest assured there is no bias with this proposal — MusikAnimal talk 17:38, 19 June 2016 (UTC)
- Okay. But I was just thinking about some things such as Dishwashing liquid, where although not searched often is relatively well-known to everyday life. Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 00:45, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
- Dishwashing liquid appears to attract over 400 daily pageviews, which I think is sufficient. You will likely find the same to be true for other everyday topics — MusikAnimal talk 18:04, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

- I support taking page views into account. This can be accomplished by MusikAnimal's proposal or by individuals registering opposition to nominations with few page views. The latter seems to be more simple and more flexible. ~Kvng (talk) 14:40, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

MUCH better lately
Thanks for taking serious my, and I assume others', complaints that the focus on low-importance pop-culture topics late last year and early this year was inappropriate. The topic selections recently and forthcoming seem much more like what we should be working on (and for the first time in a while now, I was inspired to spend over an hour working on this week's AfI). — SMcCandlish ☺ ☏ ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ᴥⱷʌ≼ 18:14, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
- I fixed broken and incomplete citations, fixed an issue with one of the images (the exports treemap - had to upload a new version of the image), and imposed consistent citation and date formats in the absence of either. This strikes me as something we should remind people about. If the TAfI user-talk invites included something like "Please be mindful of any English-language variety, date format, or citation style already consistently used at the article.", that would probably do the trick. It's not going to be a good thing for TAfI to draw lots of random editorial attention to an article if one of the side effects of it is random mess of conflicting styles and formats. The camper and hiker motto applies here: Leave the place cleaner than when you found it. :-) — SMcCandlish ☺ ☏ ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ᴥⱷʌ≼ 06:48, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
Sun deck
Sun deck is a redirect to Deck (ship). Always has been as far as I can tell. The TAFI banner is on Deck (ship). Why are we saying we're working on Sun deck, a redirect? ~Kvng (talk) 22:27, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
- It was nominated as a stub, before it was deleted at AFD and subsequently recreated as a redirect - Evad37 [talk] 00:34, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
- Redirect is what I came here to point out too too, but I disagree with redirecting to Deck (ship). A wikt:sundeck can surely be other places than a on a ship. See also Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sun deck (August 2015). Nb. Redirect was created 1 Sept 2015 [2]. 220 of Borg 03:12, 20 July 2016 (UTC)

Semi-protected articles
Where do we stand on semi-protected articles? I wanted to nominate Ball but I'm not sure if this is appropriate for this project.--CSJJ104 (talk) 13:23, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
- There is not a big problem with semi-protected articles, as articles such as Pizza and Spaghetti had been well-improved by TAFI yet they had been semi-ed during that time. However, you'll need to consider that fewer users may edit semi-protected articles, so perhaps think further whether a considerable amount of improvement can be done, rather than think that no semi-ed article may fit TAFI. Plastic explosive improvements
I have some general familiarity with plastic explosives, but I am not sure what should even go in the article. Maybe an overview of the different types of plastic explosives, with a little blurb about each? Then it might be easier to back out a history since more will be written. Does that sounds good, and anything that should be included? Kees08 (talk) 06:22, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

Cannabis-related collaboration for April 20?
I'm sure it's too late for this project to schedule a cannabis-related article for improvement for April 20 (see 420 (cannabis culture) if you're not familiar with the connection), but thought I'd post here to see if it would be possible to get a cannabis TAFI. If not, no worries! Project members are welcome to assist in the upcoming "420 collaboration" either way. Thanks for your consideration! ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:09, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
