In this class, we will dive into the history of American consumerism by studying advertising, commodities, popular culture, and economic systems. We will focus especially on the mid-twentieth century, a period of massive growth and consolidation of the consumer economy. Students will be working to edit and/or write articles related to the history of consumerism in the mid-20th-century United States, from the Depression through the 1970s.
