So it was just announced that marine archaeologists discovered the wreck of SMS Scharnhorst, so I thought it was time to bring her sister Gneisenau to A-class review (and perhaps to FAC before they find this wreck too!). In any event, Gneisenau had a fairly short career, being in service just six years before being sunk in December 1914 at the Falklands, a month after having helped to sink a pair of British armored cruisers. Thanks to all who take the time to review the article. Parsecboy (talk) 13:31, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

Great to hear we finally solved another WWI mystery. For a ship which had a short life; she got a longer one than expected. :) Cheers. CPA-5 (talk) 15:45, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

[edit]This article is in great shape. I have a few comments:
- in the lead, suggest "the German light cruiser Nürnberg"
- Done
- also in the lead, Spee isn't properly introduced
- Good catch
- the draft figures don't match exactly between body and infobox (rounding?)
- Fixed
- mention the screw propellers in the body?
- Done
- the conversions of the top speed don't match between body and infobox (rounding?)
- Fixed
- where were the casemated main battery guns located?
- Clarified
- the turret armour isn't consistent between body and infobox
- Fixed
- there is a mention of wing turrets under armour, but all other guns are identified as being in centreline turrets or casemates
- Corrected
- the ordered date doesn't match between body and infobox
- Good catch
- suggest "She took part in a major fleet cruise in the Atlantic Ocean in company with the battleship squadrons of the High Seas Fleet immediately after completing trials."
- Done
- comma after Hohenzollern
- Done
- move introduction of Krosigk to first mention
- Fixed
- suggest "Krosigk returned to
the shipher" slightly clearer- Done
- suggest "
The shipGneisenau won the Schießpreis for the 1912–1913 year"- Done
- first name for Maerker?
- After a bit of digging, I tracked it down
- "arriving in Truk in early July where they
wouldrestocked their coal supplies"- Done
- drop the errant space in "ordered his ships to open fire , by which time"
- Done
- drop the comma from "Leipzig, and Nürnberg"
- Done
- "Juan Fernandez Islands"
- Fixed
- the sources are all of high quality and reliable. Exactly what you would expect for a German ship of this vintage.
That's me done. Nice work on this. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 00:53, 25 January 2020 (UTC)

[edit]- All images appropriately licensed
- All maps or diagrams are based on reliable sources.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 16:57, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
- Almost forgot, the photo at the beginning of the service history section is in terrible shape. Given that it basically duplicates the view given in the infobox picture, I think that it ought to be removed.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 19:10, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
- A fair point - I've shifted the one up and added a map of the Kiautschou concession. Parsecboy (talk) 18:46, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
- The map is properly licensed, everything looks good.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 13:40, 29 January 2020 (UTC)

[edit]- "which less powerful armored cruisers could not effectively combat." → 'which the less powerful armored cruisers could not effectively combat.'
- Done
- "The ship was protected by an armored belt was 15 cm of Krupp armor" A stray "was"? A missing 'which'?
- Good catch
- "Gneisenau was the first member of the class to be ordered on 8 June 1904" I think that you need a comma after "ordered". (Unless both ships were ordered on the same day.)
- Fixed
- "Prince Heinrich had pressed for such a cruise the previous year, arguing that it would prepare the fleet for overseas operations and would break up the monotony of training in German waters, though tensions with Britain over the developing Anglo-German naval arms race were high." !) That's a long sentence. 2) While I understand the connection, I am not sure that a mythical average reader will understand what the naval race tensions have to do with the monotony of training in German waters without further explanation.
- Split the sentence
- "and continued to the Atlantic" Is it known if they went through the Channel?
- I'd assume so, but I don't know for sure
- "The fleet returned to Germany" Likewise.
- As above
- "before she departed for another trip to Southwest Asia" → 'Southeast'?
- Good catch
- "and the source of German records of the battle" Just checking that "the" is correct, as opposed to 'a'.
- Yeah, the definite article is correct, since it's referring to a specific battle
Very fine work indeed. Gog the Mild (talk) 22:36, 30 January 2020 (UTC)
