Goals

[edit]

Many horse articles are tagged for having no references or inadequate references. There are also many stubs. Thus, improving the verifiability of articles is important.

There are over 3000 horse articles in Wikipedia, but no one can find them unless navigability improves. Thus, one of the goals of this project is to improve organization by use of wikilinking, categorization, use of "see also" sections

  • Organize categories and place articles within appropriate categories, improve overall navigability between related articles
  • Cleanup and streamline categories, propose excess categories for deletion, add new ones where needed
  • Add Equidae and WPEQ templates to all articles

Finally, many articles have assorted cleanup tags on them. Some of the major problems include an unencyclopedic tone due to one or more of the following:

  • Peacock terms, everywhere, especially things that sound like they came straight from ad copy.
  • Neutral Point of View problems. Remember WP:SOAP
  • Lack of sources. See CITE
  • Disorganization and its companion, redundancy.
  • No photos or inadequate photos. It is difficult to find free images, particularly of specialized items or activities. Active participants are urged to either shoot original photos or search free image sites (see WP:IMAGES for ideas) for photos. Upload to Wikimedia Commons if a free image, or use an appropriate Fair Use rationale for those that are not.

Other Useful Things

[edit]
  • Invite active contributors to officially join the project
  • Tag articles with appropriate tags for wikifying, cleanup, stubs, etc. Better yet, edit the article to eliminate these problems!
  • Create appropriate merge proposals and redirects for multiple articles found on essentially the same topic
  • Patrol and remove vandalism in articles. Request semi-protection as appropriate. (Horse and Pony are permanently semi-protected due to near-constant vandalism)
  • Use the information located in the task force on horse breeds to add additional articles on horse breeds as listed above. (See also list of horse breeds, which has hidden text placeholders for articles that need to be created.)
  • Upload more images to Wikimedia commons and to appropriate articles. Also organize images for easier access in commons
  • Place WikiProject tags on talk pages to draw additional members and to allow fast linking to project page, improve navigation, and all the other good things that proper tags can provide.
    • Add template {{equine}} template to bottom of ARTICLE pages, as seen at the bottom of this page
    • Add the template {{WikiProject Equine|class=|importance=}} to TALK pages.
      • Add {{WikiProject Equine|breeds=yes|class=|importance=}} or {{WikiProject Equine|training=yes|class=|importance=}} to TALK pages of articles with the respective focuses of horse breeds or horse training.

Our new and improved project template looks like this:

  • Template:Infobox Horse – Used for horse breed articles only. Cut and paste to insert, then add additional information
Navboxes
  • Template:Equine placed into articles this way: {{equine}} – Nav template for general reference used by WPEQ consensus at the bottom on all horse breed articles. Should appear on all horse health articles, and seems to appear randomly on other articles as editors see fit. No firm consensus on use outside of horse breed articles, but current practice favors inclusion. Does not have to be altered for individual articles
  • Template:Equine coat colors placed into articles this way: {{equine coat color}} – Nav template to all known color articles, used at the bottom of color-related articles only. Does not have to be altered for individual articles.
