Another hodgepodge this week, with some sport, some film, some TV and some Supreme Court news. Death also, unfortunately, holds a significant place on the Report.
Rank Article Class Views Image Notes/about 1 Taylor Hawkins 2,296,427 The rock world was caught by surprise once the long-time drummer of the Foo Fighters, one of the few who could live up to frontman Dave Grohl behind the kit, was found dead in his hotel room on the same day they would play in Bogota. Hawkins, who was also a part of Sass Jordan and Alanis Morissette's bands, and had side project Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, had no official cause of death revealed, aside from the fact ten substances were found in his body. 2 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine 2,241,789 As the invasion drags on into the fifth week of what was meant to be a few days, it continues to be awful. 3 RRR (film) 1,404,414 Courtesy of Tollywood, RRR (short for Roudram Ranam Rudhiram) tells a fictional story of two Indian folk heroes fighting against the British Raj. Critics have broadly praised the film, and it seems set to do well at the box office. 4 Vladimir Putin 1,319,495 There's not much more to say about Russia's dictator-president, so just enjoy this photo, which for some reason was the first thing that came up on Commons when I searched up "Vladimir Putin falling over". 5 The Kashmir Files 1,270,790 Another recent Indian historical drama, The Kashmir Files tells a fictionalised version of the Exodus of Kashmiri Hindus. Some have called said fictionalisation an attempt to stir up communal tensions. 6 Ketanji Brown Jackson 1,203,010 Following her nomination by President Joe Biden, Jackson's confirmation hearings for the U.S. Supreme Court took place this week. The hearings basically went how you might expect, with the Democrats touting her qualifications and emphasising the historic nature of her confirmation and the Republicans painting her as a child-corrupting antifeminist who thinks all white babies are racist. 7 Madeleine Albright 1,019,434 A native Czech who served as United States Secretary of State during the second Clinton administration (the first woman to occupy that role) and died at the age of 84. 8 The Batman (film) 891,176 The latest Batman film continues to rake in money: with over $600 million in box office receipts worldwide, it became the highest-grossing film of the year this week. Discussions of The Batman were also reignited when director Matt Reeves released a deleted scene featuring Robert Pattinson's Caped Crusader meeting none other than the Clown Prince of Crime himself, portrayed by Barry Keoghan. (in the film itself, only his voice is heard in Arkham Asylum) 9 Deaths in 2022 864,841 Let's put in a song #1 wrote: 10 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification 691,300 The spots for football's greatest competition are being sorted out. Japan, Saudi Arabia, Ecuador and Uruguay punched their tickets, #2 caused Poland to win by W/O over Russia and Ukraine's games to be postponed until June. Notably, the reigning European champions and four-time World Cup winners, Italy, failed to qualify for second time in a row after losing their play-offs match against North Macedonia. 11 Anna Sorokin 659,678 BREAKING NEWS: People are still watching Inventing Anna. In the meantime, its subject is in jail waiting to be deported and cashing in on Netflix making her even more infamous. 12 Ukraine 634,087 See #2. 13 Russo-Ukrainian War 628,010 14 Deep Water (2022 film) 607,017 This week, Hulu released a film centering around a man (Ben Affleck) murdering the boyfriends of his wife (Ana de Armas, pictured). The film is noted for both the return of director Adrian Lyne and how the two leads had a romance during the years the film was both postponed and relegated to streaming, though Affleck has since gone back to old girlfriend Jennifer Lopez. 15 Clarence Thomas 563,103 As the court's newest member is selected, the oldest is the subject of an ethics scandal after the Washington Post published text messages showing Thomas's wife Virginia Thomas attempting to pressure ex-chief of staff Mark Meadows to overturn the 2020 presidential election. 16 China Eastern Airlines Flight 5735 562,083 This week, a passenger plane flying from Kunming to Guangzhou crashed in rural Guangxi, killing all 132 people on board. 17 Bridgerton 536,107 This week, the hit Netflix mixed-race aristocracy soap-opera's second season began. 18 Volodymyr Zelenskyy 525,839 As of today, Volodymyr Zelenskyy is still the president of his country, which in itself is a sign of Russia's lack of success in invading Ukraine. 19 Foo Fighters 513,088 In 1994, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain killed himself, and one year later drummer Dave Grohl tried to get some catharsis out of the sadness recording an album all by himself under the name "Foo Fighters". He eventually turned that into a full-band endeavor to great success, with chart-topping albums, sold-out concert tours, Grammys, and a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sadly, the sudden death of their second drummer (#1), absent from only two of their ten albums, makes one wonder about the Foos' future. 20 Turning Red 452,934 Pixar's latest feature film, critically acclaimed, is still getting big Disney+ views, as well as some box office numbers. 21 Lia Thomas 450,864 This week, Lia Thomas became the first transgender athlete to win an NCAA Division I National Championship, in the women's 500-yard freestyle swimming event. 22 Elizabeth Holmes 438,119 The ex-CEO of Theranos continues to rack up views thanks to The Dropout. 23 Azov Battalion 419,993 The Ukraine National Guard's neo-Nazi paramilitary group continues to receive a lot of attention. 24 2022 FIFA World Cup 414,815 This year's edition of the highest tier of football has almost got its cast sorted out, as discussed above. 25 1983 Cricket World Cup 412,054 Indian telecommunications major Airtel decided to showcase their 5G network through an immersive video entertainment recreating this historic victory in the national sport, using high-end holograms and the direct involvement of player Kapil Dev.
