Old announcements

[edit]
  • A new stub has been created, along with English and Welsh partner stubs (I suspect "out of process"): Category:Scottish football biography stubs. To use it you add {{Scotland-footybio-stub}}. The guys over at stub sorting may have a word or two to say to the "miscreant" that initiated it, but if it is going to hold at least 60 biographies I don't suppose they will mind too much. There are only 5 in it at present.--Mais oui! 14:40, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note that Glasgow-geo-stub and WesternIsles-geo-stub are proposed. Specifically, that Scotland-geo-stub would be split up according to Lieutenancy areas, which would be consistent with how the England-geo-stubs were split up. As and when they're found to hit some reasonable size threshold, that is. The other obvious alternative would be by "unitaries". Alai 16:26, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • Is Ronnie Corbett a Scot or a Brit? Well, the answer (of course?) is: both. But how should he be described in:
1. the article itself?
2. the categorisation?
Have your tuppence-worth at Talk:Ronnie Corbett.--Mais oui! 20:07, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • Several bits of news today. Firstly, check out the new Portal:London, which seems to have been stimulated by the arrival of "our" brand new Portal:Scotland. Theirs is undoubtedly better than ours at the moment, but as I am computer-code inept, perhaps that is no surprise. If anyone more competent would like to fiddle with the layout, content and images at the Scotland portal, feel free. Also feel free to browse other portals (eg London!), picking up tips and hints. (I note that Wikipedia:WikiProject London was the driving force behind their success. Perhaps it is time for a Wikipedia:WikiProject Scotland, Wikipedia:WikiProject Edinburgh and Wikipedia:WikiProject Glasgow to drive forward the main Scotland-related Wikiportal(s) and principal pages?)
Secondly, we have our first successes to report, some a little belatedly. The following pages have been initiated or ammended after first being displayed on this page (we do not necessarily claim "cause and effect" although there is certainly an element of that):
- belated thanks to User:MacRusgail, for creating the much-needed Category:Scotland stubs (or Category:Scotland-related stubs?, see the relevant WP:CFD and WP:SFD discussions) on 22 Oct. He did this "out-of-process" (slapped wrist was humbly accepted I understand), but it is a much needed supercat for our three (thus far) Scotland-related stub cats: geo, bio, and Hebrides-geo. MacRusgail did this only about 12 hours after this notice board went live, so unclear if any association. Nice if there was though.
- next came the new Portal:Scotland itself on 24 Oct, which started its life as a red link for the first couple of days of this notice board, but is now cantering along like a fresh foal
- then yesterday we had a veritable flood of progress: Rheic Ocean (new), Daniela Nardini (new), Scottish Episcopal Church (much improved) (plus associated Template:ReligionScotland), and a nice Turner painting for Falls of Clyde (waterfalls)
Several sub-pages have been set up or are planned (see links under header "News")
Everything is starting to pick up quite fast now, so it may be hard to keep track of everything. Can I just request that if you create something new, or improve it/provide image etc, can you just leave it up for a few days, but strike it out, with a comment like (done), so that other Users can see how (if) things are progressing. Then we can move it to the relevant sub-page.
I cannot keep track of all the new Scotland-related articles, but we will just have to do our best logging the ones that we do spot. There seems to be an awful lot created each day, but no easy way of searching for them.--Mais oui! 11:21, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • The Scotland Portal is now up and running. It is a project in the early stages of development, but I think it could be a very useful resource indeed, perhaps more for general readers (the vast majority I presume), rather than committed editors, who may be more attracted by the great possibilities of this Scottish Wikipedians' notice board format.
Give it a Watch, and lend a hand if you can. It is (hopefully) fairly low-maintenance, but if we run with the "News" section, that will take dedication: time which I cannot commit to presently myself. Most other boxes need replacment/update only weekly, fortnightly, or monthly, plus the occasional refreshment of the Scotland-related categories. Anyway, I assume this is how the other Portals are run, so we can follow their lead.
Please add the following code - {{portalpar|Scotland}} - to your own User page, and you will have the link to the portal right there for easy access. I will investigate how other portals use shortcuts too.
Assistance from Wikipedians in the rest of the UK, and indeed everywhere, would be greatly appreciated!--Mais oui! 10:17, 25 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
