[edit]Database for fallen British Jews of WWII
[edit]I hate to ask this but I just exhausted myself for an hour trying to find this and I don’t know what else to do.
Is anybody familiar with an online database for British Jewish soldiers who fell during WWII? I found it about six months ago and at the time they had only finished the biographies for the Jews in the RAF (there was, for example, a brief biography for somebody nicknamed ‘Lofty’). I am 90% sure that the website wasn’t AJEX.
I have a feeling that the database is gone now; I exhausted a couple of search engines and I couldn’t find it anymore. —(((Romanophile))) ♞ (contributions) 05:04, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
- Romanophile, I have emailed a copy of your query to a friend of mine who is very knowledgeable in this area. Wait for a day or three to see if he can advise you, either directly here or via myself. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.205.111.170 (talk) 02:20, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- If the database existed on line in the past, you might try (if you haven't already tried) searching saved web pages on the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. Of course this would be easier and have a greater chance of success if you recall how you found the database in the first place (ideally with the URL or name of the web-site). —— Shakescene (talk) 03:22, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- Romanophile, my friend has replied as follows [I have redacted some personal details]:
- "There is a large book called 'The British Jewry Book of Honour' (1922) which lists (by regiment) every serviceman who served in the armed forces of the British Empire in the Great War - some 50,000.
- A list of fallen officers & men is at the beginning of the book.
- Attempts have been made to replicate this for WWII, but it has been hindered by many factors: principally the necessity of Allied combatants to conceal any papers attesting to their Jewishness in case of capture, which would have resulted in, at best, instant execution.
- It is indeed the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen & Women (AJEX) that has been working on this, and the prime mover of the project is Martin Sugarman, who has spent over 30 years trying to record every Jew killed in action during WWII. Please contact AJEX for more info . . . https://www.ajex.org.uk/contact-us".
- Hope this helps. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.205.111.170 (talk) 14:49, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
