[edit]Words for movement along an axis without rotation
[edit]Hello,
I am looking for terms regarding camera movement in 3 Dimensions. Rotation can be referred to as Yaw, Pitch, and Roll. I can refer to movement along the Z-axis as "forward" and "backward". However, what names are there for movement along the X and Y axes without rotation of the camera? I have found that "Panning" actually refers to rotation, so "pan left/right/up/down" seems not fully appropriate.
Thank you.

- Why not just "move left/right/up/down" or "track left/right/up/down"? Dbfirs 08:37, 8 November 2015 (UTC)
Yes, fair enough. Something like this seems like a reasonable answer.

- Alternately (and more specifically), you can use "translate" instead of "move". See Translation (geometry). -- ToE 11:04, 8 November 2015 (UTC)
- If you're looking to keep the metaphor consistent, see Ship motions. Linear motion along the roll axis is surge; along the pitch axis, sway; along the yaw axis, heave. (I recently learned these when I was looking for metaphors!) —Tamfang (talk) 06:53, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
- Translation is the right word in math, but for cameras, "Track" is the word used by film makers. Track right, track left, Tracking_shot. SemanticMantis (talk) 16:35, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
