[edit]Spoiler warnings in non-English media
[edit]Are spoiler warnings common in the media of non-English speaking countries? As in, are spoiler warnings in German, French, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Arabic etc. media? I'm aware that many Wikipedias (notably the French and Japanese Wikipedias) still use spoiler warnings (although the Japanese Wiki now discourages them), although this was probably because they copied the warnings from the time the English Wikipedia still used spoiler warnings. But anyway, are spoiler warnings common in non-English media, whether print or web? Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 06:25, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
- In German media, spoiler warnings are absolutely unknown. I read the word a couple of times before but had to look it up just now in order to answer the question. Even after I had read half the article I still didn't quite grasp the concept. I'm not sure I do now. "If you don't want to know the plot of a movie, don't read about it!", seems to be the attitude in Germany.--Zoppp (talk) 14:04, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
- Seems a bit odd. Surely the point of reading a review is to find out if something is worth seeing (or reading)? Or doesn't that concept exist in Germany? Alansplodge (talk) 16:13, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
- The point of reading a review is to find out if something is worth seeing, exactly. Now, how could you go about writing such a review without talking about the content of the movie? If you are interested in a review in the first place, how on earth do you need a warning that it might contain information about the movie? As I said, I still might not quite grasp the concept of a spoiler warning. But as far as I do understand it, the whole idea seems utterly pointless to me.--Zoppp (talk) 02:14, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
- Spoiler warnings are usually only given when something important is revealed about things happening far into the work. For example, "A man is murdered" wouldn't get a spoiler warning if it happens in the beginning. "The butler did it" may get a spoiler warning if it's not revealed until the end. Many media have a tradition of either not revealing such spoilers, or give spoiler warnings before they do. Such media are relatively safe to use for people who don't want to know spoilers. Some people are so used to this that they even expect it from an encyclopedia. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:58, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
"His Girl" a bebop/funk jazz song and more information about it
[edit]I was listening to a Pandora station centered on The Seatbelts (the Japanese big Jazz band lead by Yoko Kanno)and heard a song that was titled "His Girl" which I believe was an instrumental arrangement of "My Girl" originally by The Temptations". The arrangement featured what sounded like a big band with an electric bass and had changed most of the chorus chords to minor (or something equally dour). I would love to know the artist, album, and release date if possible. Thank you for your time and consideration.Reallygreengirl (talk) 12:58, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
- Would it be this? (The antepenultimate sentence of the review calls the track "His Girl", although the track listing has "My Girl". There's a sample at the track-list entry, though, so you can see whether it matches what you heard.) Deor (talk) 18:55, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
That was exactly it! Thank you!Reallygreengirl (talk) 19:11, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
Marten's facial expression riding on a robot whale
[edit]In the Questionable Content strip for this Friday, last panel, what is Marten's facial expression like? Is he showing fear? Happyness? The face is too small for me to see. – b_jonas 18:27, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
- Looks like a smile to me. Does your browser not allow you to zoom in? Matt Deres (talk) 04:34, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you. I can zoom it, but there's just too few pixels so I'm not sure. – b_jonas 10:52, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
- His facial expression looks like exactly what I'd expect Marten to feel if he were on top of a robot whale. A little surprise, a little glee, a little HOLYCRAPI'MONAWHALE. You might get a better answer from the QC forums. Back when I frequented them a few years ago, there were always in-depth discussions of every tiny little aspect of the comic. And thanks for reminding me how far behind I am in my QC-reading! Foofish (talk) 16:59, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for your opinion, Foofish. I will read in the forums too. – b_jonas 19:01, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
- This non-canon larger image of the whale panel on the forums suggests he's smiling happy. – b_jonas 19:48, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
