Et in Arcadia ego
("I too have been in Arcadia")

"Even in Arcadia, there am I" (I was once happy and/or alive; a person who once enjoyed the pleasures of life on earth; and here means the pleasure and joy of contributing to Wikipedia). It has about the same meaning as "memento mori" ("remember that you will die" … and who will forget this reminder :D). This Latin phrase derives from the scene of Daphnis's tomb —Daphnis was a Sicilian shepherd and inventor of pastoral poetry— in Virgil's Eclogues 5:42–44. Arcadia (portayed by Wikipedia) is an utopian Pastoral State, a vision of living in harmony with nature. It is also the title (or the main theme) of three Baroque paintings: one by Guercino (1622) and two by Poussin (Les Bergers d'Arcadie: 1627 and 1637). Goethe quoted this phrase, recalling his youthful travels in Italy. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 09:08, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

P.S. (where the capital "P" stands for "post", you know, but also for somethin' "personal" :D): A couple of days ago I was listening to 999's "Nasty Nasty", and I would liked to use a couple of lines of the song: "what the hell is wrong with you" and "what the hell you gonna do" here at MotD :D … but I did nothin' ~ lol. The very strange thingY is that the very last verse of the song (Emergency 1997 version, which is a little bit longer than other versions, including the 1977 single) sounded to me as "Benny" or "Bennieee" … lol … but not for a similarity between you and Nasty … lol … but for your "punk attitude"!!! :D

If you intend to live in peace and harmony with your fellow men, you and they should cultivate brotherhood and respect for each other. If you want to work together with them for your mutual benefit, you must practice cooperation.

Strong support. I think one or the other of these should be used, as it's the 200th anniversary of his birth. So it's a milestone anniversary, and I think it ought to be marked as such. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:33, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

And I cry to you: peace!
And I cry to you: love!

Giuseppe Verdi, Simon Boccanegra (1881 revision). For either 9 or 10 October (I don't know which is being celebrated), the 200th anniversary of Verdi's birth. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:41, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

Note: for 9 October 2013 is scheduled a line taken from "All You Need Is Love" for John Lennon's birth (9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980). What about adding this quote by Verdi and having two mottos scheduled for 9 October 2013? –pjoef (talkcontribs) 08:09, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

  • I would support having two mottoes on the same day but then on the other hand several days at the end of October don't have any (thus making the "random motto" templates fail if they land on one of those days)… benzband (talk) 21:16, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
