Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/November 2009

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 16th New York City Meetup event was held on Sunday, November 15, 2009 in the Columbia University area. This will be the tenth of the meetups with a session dedicated to discussing meta:Wikimedia New York City issues.

Topics on the agenda will include a review of the recent Wikipedia Takes Manhattan 3 and other topics, including the developing projects with the Wikimedia NYC interns.

What, Where, When, and How?

[edit]

There is one public meeting in the afternoon at Columbia University, where we take further steps to organize the Wikimedia New York City local chapter, and provide a salon-style forum for discussion of Wikipedia and Wikimedia issues.

Additionally, there is an optional post-meeting dinner at a neighborhood restaurant.

Main public meeting

[edit]

(to discuss Wikipedia issues and Wikimedia NYC chapter issues):

  • 1402 Pupin Hall, Columbia University. Enter the Columbia campus at 116th Street and Broadway. Pupin Hall is located in the Northwest corner of the campus, next to the large building under construction. Take the elevator to the 13th floor and then walk up one flight of stairs. Meeting to be held in the library at the east end of the hall. 2:30 PM - 5:00PM

Optional post-meeting meetup

[edit]
  • Meetup at Columbia, and then walk together to a neighborhood restaurant, to be decided upon. 5:00 PM onwards.

Late arrival info and Transportation

[edit]

If you plan on arriving late, and are concerned about not finding your way to the group, you can drop your mobile phone number ahead of time at Special:Emailuser/Pharos (e-mail will not be able to be checked during the actual meetup time; leave requests ahead of time).

Depending on how my schedule works out. But, can we go to somewhere other than symposium? Tim Song (talk) 06:49, 15 October 2009 (UTC) moved to likely[reply]
I love the Symposium and it's comfortable and convenient (especially the long symposium table), but Tim has a point. Lets discuss trying another place, just for a change of pace if no other reason. — Becksguy (talk) 08:27, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, of course, a change of pace would be fine. Let's hear some restaurant suggestions, people! (I don't know the area very well myself)--Pharos (talk) 12:50, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Topics of discussion

[edit]

DGG started us off with a look at one of the more vexing dilemmas encountered in articles on fringe ethnicity topics.

Then we moved on to the upcoming CUNY IT conference and educational outreach efforts in general, and also options for the next Wiki-Conference New York in August 2010 and a possible follow-up meta:Wikimania 2011 bid.

We explored 501(c)(3) options and several people were generous in sharing their own nonprofit experiences, and we also passed two resolutions, welcoming Newyorkbrad to the board and Becksguy to the Treasurer position.

Our next meeting should be in January, and maybe we'll do something fun for Wikipedia Day.

And it all ended with dinner and mint tea at Cafe Nana.
