This page documents edit-a-thons and minor Wikipedia meetups held at the American Corner at the Cape Town Central Library. Events hosted by Wikimedia ZA.
Events will be held at the Central Library in Cape Town on the 4 November 2017, 20 January 2018, 17 February 2018, 17 March 2018, 21 April 2018, 19 May 2018, 09 June 2018, 21 July 2018, 18 August 2018 & 15 September 2018.
21 January 2017
[edit]The first Wikipedia training event for 2017 was held at the American corner.
16 September 2017
[edit]This edit-a-thon was held on Saturday the 16 September 2017 from 10:00-16:00 and was open to the general public. There was no theme for the event and the focus was on giving a general introduction to Wikipedia broadly. Some more advanced participants did the One Lib/One Ref exercise and others edited articles in their own languages.
About 11-12 people attended the event.

[edit]Participants did a range of activities from reading Wikipedia to familiarise themselves with the site to adding references and copy editing articles. A total of about 8 or 9 people attended the event.

[edit]Picking up where we left in January, again taking Freshlyground as an example, we discussed infoboxes, commons, the relationship between languages, talk pages and much more.

[edit]Next to going through the basics, based on the recent events surrounding the Cape Town International Airport article, we had the opportunity to discuss vandalism, diffs, bots, reverts, and other countermeasures en detail. We also tried ourselves in SPARQL on Wikidata Query by asking for soccer teams, their countries, location, and league level. See query at tinyurl.com/y773ak2z

[edit]Event ran from 10:00-15:00. It was followed by a Wikimania 2018 team meeting for Cape Town based team members at 15:00.
The focus of the event was on training and coaching new editors to Wikipedia with a focus on the OneLib OneRef workshop.
Edited a range of articles on both Wikipedia and Wikivoyage. Articles edited include but are not limited to recording artists like Cassper Nyovest to actors (Alice Krige) to artists (Ashley Walters).

[edit]Even ran from 10:00 to 13:00 (close early due to schedualed fumigation of the space). The focus of the event was a quick orientation about Wikipedia and how it works followed by doing the 1Lib1Ref exercise.

[edit]Next to the basics and citation hunt, we discussed the role of Wikidata, ran through some examples and fixed items in regards to the Saudi_Professional_League. Next to the edit-a-thon, we also discussed possible avenues of including notable personalities of the Design_Indaba.

[edit]We covered many aspects of research and sourcing references, trying to help Hasewell1 create an article on Dzumeri. We could discuss aspects around notability, translations, and the problems of oral history.
