DYK question

Hi - I'm trying to submit a DYK nom, but it's not appearing on the nominations page. Am I missing a step? Here's the nomination subpage: Template:Did_you_know_nominations/Blind_Injustice_(opera) Do I need to do something more or different to get it to appear on the the noms page? Images

It used to be that when I clicked on an image in Wikipedia, I was taken to its page on Commons. But now, I'm taken to a slideshow. I guess this is because I've accidentally messed up my "Preferences" somehow; but I've failed to find out how correct it. Can someone please advise? Maproom (talk) 07:59, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Maproom; It appears you have enabled MediaViewer and may have disabled image redirection to Commons; they are two different things. For the first issue, access your Preferences → Appearance and under Appearance tab, look for "Enable Media Viewer" option and uncheck it if it's checked. This will disable the slideshow, but the image will still to be shown from English Wikipedia file namespace. For you to be taken to the image page on Commons directly access your Preferences → Gadgets and under Gadgets tab, look for "Redirect image links to Commons for files hosted there" option and check as appropriate. Why did my article remain unpublished even after submission?

Recently I wrote a wiki article on Thadlaskein Lake and I have submitted the same. And i wait hours and days but the article was remain unpublished. I make a couple of changes, and re-editted the same. But haven't successful yet. Please help — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nangoosari (talkcontribs)

@Nangoosari: I don't see where you have submitted the draft for review. I will shortly add the appropriate template to allow you to do so. You will need to be patient, as it could taken many weeks or even months to be reviewed, as there are thousands of drafts awaiting review by volunteers. 331dot (talk) 11:32, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Hello Nangoosari, you had removed the button "Resubmit this article" from the article, so it wasn't submitted for review. Non-free logo on multiple pages?

Is it possible for a logo to be used on more than one page? In my case, the school badge is the same for both the high school and junior school.
If not, will someone run me through the process of re-uploading the same logo without getting it deleted?

Yes, you can add the logo to the junior school page, but you need a separate "fair use" template at the image, mentioning the junior school. Is it possible to obtain a logo with a transparent background in png format? Dbfirs 20:34, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Dbfirs: Are these two separate instructions? I can definetly make the background transparent, but I'm not sure specifically where or how to add the separate "fair use" template for the junior school to the existing logo. HeyitsBen(talk) 14:19, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've copied the original fair use template here and mentioned the Junior School so your should now be permitted to add the logo to the Junior School article. Wikipedia prefers a transparent background and png format, but that is not essential. Dbfirs 17:11, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Robin Squire

For years now, you have carried my life story and details, because I am a former politician in the UK. I noted on a recent visit after many years to "my" site that you are carrying an incorrect photograph at the top of the front page - there is more than one Robin Squire, thus the problem - but elsewhere you carry my correct photograph. How do you/we get it right?

Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong. – Thjarkur (talk) 15:02, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Þjarkur is correct. The Wikipedia article Robin Squire about you contains no photograph. There is another Robin Squire who is an author and screenwriter. Google's robotic algorithms occasionally make this error. They take text from Wikipedia about one person and mash it up with photos of another person of the same name. You need to discuss the problem with Google. You will see a link at the bottom of the Google Knowledge Graph that says "Claim this knowledge panel". Click that and follow the instructions. If you upload a freely licensed photo of yourself to Wikimedia Commons, we can add that to your biography, which will also help. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 20:45, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
To expand on Cullen328's point, we have no control over Google's mysterious algorithms. However, we have noticed that they tend to use an image from the Wikipedia article when such an image exists. Note that Cullen mentioned a "freely licensed" image: that's a picture to which you own the copyright and that you upload to Wikipedia Commons with a CC-BY-SA license. Frederick Albert Saunders - Canadian, but Wikipedia page only in German

Frederick Albert Saunders was a Canadian physicist/astronomer. He has a Wikipedia entry in German: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Albert_Saunders It is shameful that this great Canadian scientist has no Wikipedia page in either English or French. @Jtelser: That German article has only source and it is the Mathematics Genealogy Project so there is no real biographical information at the source. So it means the article would need researched and rewritten from scratch. So it is not simple translation. There is a fairly large amount of information on him, including I'm assuming a public domain biography, so it should be fairly to create a good article. scope_creepTalk 23:44, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean "that German article has only source" and "there is no real biographical information at the source"? The German article links to the National Academy of Sciences biography as a source. @Jtelser: It is possible that some volunteer will undertake this, but it's far quicker to do this yourself. Please take a look at WP:YFA. All Wikipedia editors have the same rights and responsibilities for Wikipedia content, and this includes you. You are the one who thinks this omission is shameful, so you are the one who is responsible to fix it. If, after reading WP:YFA you decide you cannot create an article yourself, then look at Wikipedia:Requested articles to see how to try to get another editor to do it. scope_creep as already checked and found that your subject is notable, so you are past the major hurdle, and at least in theory, any article you write (that is not a copyright violation) will be retained, no matter how poor it is initially. sfn sources

Hi Folks, I'm having some problems with using the template:sfn. I'm changing the reference list in the Red Orchestra to try and make the reference more elegant as its currently a mess. I'm doing research on the group and thought I would fix the reference to the new citation style. But for some reason it is not working. When tooltip for ref 4 is clicked it doesn't go to the biblio page. This is different from the behaviour at e.g. Kersti Juva. Any ideas what I am doing wrong. Firstly, Please read Category:English gentry families. Not surprisingly, that category is for "English gentry families". Potternewton is not a family, it is a place, so if anyone were to add the article to that category it would be removed.
Secondly, you repeatedly say "I cannot do it on this device", so it would be wise for you to refrain from editing Wikipedia until you have a different device. --David Biddulph (talk) 03:06, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Srbernadette, if you are editing with an Android device, try scrolling down to the very bottom of the page, click "Desktop site" and you will have access to a fully functional editing interface on your device. That is how I edit, and I am an administrator who carries out a wide variety of sophisticated operations from blocking trolls to writing peer reviewed Good Articles, all on my phone. Cullen328, I edit on apple devices (iPad and iPhone) and can verify that the same functionality exists. I of course do not currently block trolls nor have I any Good Articles to my credit; that, however, is a limitation of the user, not of the device. :) CThomas3 (talk) 05:31, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@David Biddulph: Srbernadette does make frequent mistakes that need to be corrected afterwards (adding a category for families to a place would be such a mistake). However trying to use a mobile-specific website with their mobile when it should be bypassed in favor of editing the desktop version is not such a mistake; it should not elicit the advice "stop editing until you figure it out" but rather "complain to the Wikimedia dev team". Failures of user experience design should never be blamed on the user.
