[edit]entering the awads a film has won with careful references to the most legitimate websites and it was all deleted why was everything deleted? the reference websites are sterling. how can i recover my work? - the page I am trying to edit is the page for the film "Bahrain: Shouting in the Dark"-- I am the filmmaker and I am simply trying to update the awards it has won. - my name is may ying welsh. not sure how much information you need to help me...— Preceding unsigned comment added by Mayyingmaya (talk • contribs) 00:02, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- It's because you are not normally allowed to link to YouTube according to Wikipedia rules. The removal of the content was done automatically for this reason. If the same edits are re-done but leaving the external links alone, it should be OK.
- Incidentally, as the film-maker, you should not edit the article directly, but instead post your suggestions to the talkpage. Formerip (talk) 00:09, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Can't edit
[edit]I want to add information on a page, but edit is not at the top of my page. When I go to talk it comes up, but then goes away when I go to an article. How can I edit?Emmy23333 (talk) 00:15, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
I'm new to this website and, like I said muse want to add some information to an article. I dont know how to message back to someone so I'm just doing this. Kolega357, thanks for the links, I read them, but it dosnt help. My account has what I think is called a similar lock. Kolega357 or anyone who understands this pease just tell me how I can edit with this lock. Thank you for your help, sorry I'm so confused.Emmy23333 (talk) 00:35, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- You are probably trying to edit a locked page and the answer is that, as a new user, you just can't. Often, pages are not locked for very long, so you may find that you are able to edit the page in the near future. Formerip (talk) 00:37, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- Your account is not autoconfirmed so you cannot edit semi-protected pages. If there is no "Edit" tab on a page then click the "View source" tab instead to see how you can suggest an edit on the talk page. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:43, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Issue with File:NadiaAlibyTamaraSusa.jpeg
[edit]Hi, I'm an associate of Nadia Ali's general manager. Is there anything that we can do to have her current info box picture replaced with a more current one? I've left notes to the editor on her talk page, but we haven't any luck contacting anyone.

- If a new image was made available then it could be substituted. The image would need to be your own work and licensed under the GFDL, an acceptable Creative Commons license, or released into the public domain. If the work is by someone else, it must be similarly licensed and this must be already documented or their permission to use it under this licence documented. Problem with an editor that keeps removing verifiable information. .
[edit]I am having serious Problem with an editor that keeps removing verifiable information saying it is self promoting. How on earth do we scholars who are experts add the the data base without someone who is not an authority removing it....Kevin r Guidry has removed my text. See below I have written to him numerous times. I am an established scholar I am also a professor at Umass Dartmouth.
Dear Dr. Guidry I am writing to tell you that I am not self promoting on wiki. I am an established scholar in this field. You an google me or if you want I can have tBold texthe top two critical pedagogues in the country. Henry Giroux and Peter McLaren verify this information. Can you please respond and allow me to sort this out with you. I tried to email you at your university.
Best Sheila Macrine, professor at Umass Dartmouth.

- In sum of the above, User:ElKevbo (AKA Dr. Guidry)[1] removed User:Smacrine's post from the Critical pedagogy Wikipedia article that cited to User:Smacrine's own work.[2]. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 04:40, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- Professor Macrine has made a total of eight edits to the actual content of Wikipedia. Every one of them has involved adding her own name to the critical pedagogy article. I would call that self-promotion. Maproom (talk) 13:03, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- Professor Macrine (Smacrine (talk · contribs)) has cited her own publications in the article once again, and I have reverted this. WP:COI strongly discourages an editor from citing their own work on Wikipedia. In this instance, I believe the correct way forward is for Professor Macrine to explain on the article's talk page why she believes her work should be mentioned in the article, and then leave it to other editors to decide whether or not to add it. Gandalf61 (talk) 13:20, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- The self-citation portion of WP:COI was just changed last month, and as far as I can tell, it was done without discussion at the talk page. We've long permitted reasonable self-citation; for example, nobody censured Billwhittaker for citing a paper that he co-authored as the main source for Edgewater Park Site. Macrine's editing is problematic, but for a different reason — she seems to be saying that she's important, partially by introducing her name into the article multiple times. Simply making some statements derived from the book's conclusions is what we've historically permitted, and it's substantially different from what she's been doing. Temporary collaboration page
[edit]I would like to open a temporary collaboration page where interested users can help edit a particularly sticky article. I know I can use a new Sandbox attached to my User Page, but I don't want to have my name as part of the title because it would not seem to be Neutral. Is there a way to have an entirely new Sandbox/Collaboration/Name of Article without involving the name of any editor in the title? Thank you. GeorgeLouis (talk) 12:51, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- You could start a page thus: if the article is Philbert Desanex, then start a page titled Philbert Desanex/Sandbox for proposed revisions to Philbert Desanex article; and announce what you're doing at Talk:Philbert Desanex. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:14, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- The sandbox should be in the talk namespace, Talk:Philbert Desanex/Sandbox for proposed revisions to Philbert Desanex article, otherwise search engines will see the draft as a regular article whose name happens to contain a slash. See Wikipedia:Subpages. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:58, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

- It would help if you weren't blocked for a start, then you need to be WP:Autoconfirmed. Your name also suggests an affiliation with a group, which is a blockable offense per conflict of interest as you've no doubt learned now. If you're affiliated with a group then please edit in a neutral manner or instead request an article to be created for you at WP:AFC. Thanks ツ Jenova20 (email) 14:30, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

I recently wrote to Wiki in regards to an error about John Cena's personal life. I was told that I was allowed make the corrections myself. However, when I went to make the corrections, there is no way to do so: no edit link, etc.... All the other Wiki pages I've ever looked at have the edit link except Cena's. The correction has since been fixed by someone else but I'm a bit confused as to why this particular page is missing the edit feature. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.147.215.211 (talk) 18:51, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- It appears that there is quite a bit of vandalism on that page, so it's been protected to new and unregistered users. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 19:01, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) The page is protected from anonymous (IP address) users (like you) and new users because of persistent vandalism. If you ever encounter this, please post on the page's talk page with the change that you want to be made, and another user will correct it if possible. Sorry, but whoever told you to fix it yourself should have checked if the page was semi-protected. (Interestingly, since the page was missing the little gray lock icon, I added it). Also, you can request for the page to be unprotected at WP:Requests for page protection. (the page has been semi-protected for over a year, so it might be time to unprotect) Please see WP:Semi-protection for more information. The Anonymouse (talk • contribs) 19:02, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Now it makes sense(I'm the original poster of this question). I didn't think people would be so bothersome as to vandalize Wiki pages. I love using this site to learn new things & it's disheartening to hear of the vandalism. I would like to express my appreciation to everyone who works to keep Wikipedia up to date & working, including both the users who were kind enough to acknowledge my post. I have no need to request that the page or any page for that matter be unprotected. My initial correction was simply to help keep the page up to date. I've only edited a couple of pages myself since I'm quite new at editing, HTML, etc.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nh2000 (talk • contribs) 03:15, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Embed SVG
[edit]I have created an Interactive SVG linkmap of New York where you can hover over a county and click on it to bring you to that county's Wikipedia article. Is there any way I can embed the SVG(not a bitmap of the SVG, the SVG itself) in a page or template? I have tested it on Firefox and Chrome and it works in both.—Kelvinsong (talk) 20:28, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- That is pretty cool, though I don't know the answer. You may want to cross post your question to Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) for a quicker response. Monty845 21:49, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- I think you may not be able to get it to happen as-is. You might need to use an image map. - Purplewowies (talk) 22:03, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- Problem is, Image maps have no hover indication(so you don't know what you're clicking on, or what's there to be clicked), and writing them seems quite difficult.—Kelvinsong (talk) 22:55, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- Browser support for SVG is spotty, so the MediaWiki software renders them on a page as PNG. You would have to click through to the image page to get the linking. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 05:54, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Possible article
[edit]Hello,
I've written articles and edited entries on Wikipedia several times, about different subjects and in different languages. I've been asked about the possibility of creating an article about an English Rock musician by his management company. I've read the guidelines about such entries, but I'm not 100% sure whether this singer-songwriter-musician qualifies for inclusion on Wikipedia. He's a signed artist with an independent label; at present he has an album released worldwide, also through iTunes and all other major digital music distributors. He has worked as an actor and composed soundtracks for films and TV. I found some scenes from an Italian film starring this musician (who performs one of his songs in the film) and produced by Italian state TV on YouTube, ditto many videos of his songs or footage of live concerts. He's performed and collaborated with some very famous rock-stars and blues musicians and singers. He's been written about in books, newspapers, magazines and the music press of different countries. He's mentioned in more than one Wikipedia entry already. To my knowledge, he has not won any well-known awards, neither has he ever made the mainstream Pop charts in the UK. I found his music broadcast on several radio stations, both 'traditional' and digital ones on the internet. On Last.fm I found his biography and entries for him in different languages, with a significant back-catalog of albums, going back almost 30 years. His fanclub has its own website. His name is identical to another (living) person who's included in Wikipedia, hence I was asked if it was perhaps possible to create an entry just for the sake of disambiguation, if nothing else, as at present one will definitely find his name on Wikipedia but for an unconnected person/entry. Please let me know if such an artist qualifies for inclusion on Wikipedia. I shall check on the Help Desk page for any suggestions later. Thank you. 77.99.166.120 (talk) 21:09, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- Take a look at WP:COI first as you probably have one, then WP:MUSICBIO.--ukexpat (talk) 21:17, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Deletion review
[edit]- Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2008 November 15#Category:Books which are set within one day Result: Keep 3, Delete 1
- Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2010 April 23#Category:Films which are set within one day Result: Keep 3, Delete 1
- Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2010 April 23#Category:Books which are set within one day Result: Keep 3, Delete 1
- Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2012 September 16#Category#Films set within one day Keep 5, Delete 4, Listify 4
From the above I can see no consensus for deletion; the reverse in fact. What's brought this to my attention again is that in this weeks edition of Only Connect (Series 6 - 13. Footballers vs Draughtsmen) the contestants had to give the connection between the following The Poorhouse Fair, The British Museum Is Falling Down, A Single Man, Ulysses. The answer (which the team got) was that they are all "novels in which the action takes place over a single day". Is there any way these categories can be re-instated as I can see no consensus for their deletion; especially if the earlier discussions are taken into consideration. Can anything be done ? Thanks GrahamHardy (talk) 21:24, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- Procedurally, the first step would be to contact the closer of the discussion, Mike Selinker (talk · contribs) and express your concern to them. If after discussing it, you are unable to convince them, and still feel the close was wrong, you can initiate a Deletion Review. See the Instructions. Hope that helps. - I hope it's okay to add my 2¢: I added 'Category:Books which are set within one day' to One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich — for the obvious reason. ~E:74.60.29.141 (talk) 06:10, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry but it's not okay. Non-existing categories should not be added to articles so I removed it. "Listify" in a CfD means you want the category deleted if a list is made instead. The list was made at List of media set within one day. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is included there. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:28, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

How to use AWB?
[edit]I am eligible to use AWB, but I am not sure how to use it. I would like to edit easier, where I can fix typos and clean up pages with this tool. There are 50 pages that I am watching, containing an info-box temp. that has an uncapitalized "s". I want to make them all capitalized. Any shortcuts? Tinton5 (talk) 21:45, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- I suggest you post at WT:AWB for help. Make one of the edits by hand and include the diff in your post there, so that the requirement is 100% clear. With luck, someone should offer you some help quickly; if not, I'll reply in the morning. -- John of Reading (talk) 22:29, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
