[edit]Bill C-11. Look out.
[edit]I know Wikipedia recently had the Black-out day in response to America's SOPA/PIPA. I am sure you are aware of Canada's own Bill C-11. Which is Canada's version of SOPA/PIPA. Is there anyway you can help get the word out there? Just like America, the last thing Canada needs is a censored and policed internet. Anything is greatly appreciated by the entire population of Canada.

Artists Discography
[edit]Hello, my issue is that when I click on the single discography for certain artists, the RIAA certification no longer appears. For example, if you click on the song title "How you Remind me" by Nickelback, it says that the song was certified gold in the article. However this does not appear on the list of charting singles. This is also true for the bee gees and who knows what other artist's pages share the same problem. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.12.209.251 (talk) 00:41, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- Let me see if I understand you. How You Remind Me#Chart performances and awards says "The single was certified Gold by the RIAA". This information is not included in the table row for the single at Nickelback discography#Singles. Is that the problem? PrimeHunter (talk) 01:00, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Re advetorial changes to article and need for monitoring
[edit]Guys, you may want to keep a close watch on the article Cabcharge. There seems to be targeted work underway by WideEyedBill to maintain the article as advertising and promotional material (he's probably one of the company's communications people). Another user, Ellen Fehls, had previously added some credible and well referenced material critical of the company and its activities. WideEyedBill, however, reversed or nullified most of these changes over several sessions while adding some further promotional material about the company. I would like to point out that none of this promotional material is appropriately referenced thus casting serious doubts about its credibility. Shanks Group image
[edit]The image on the Shanks Group page needs amending as this logo is now obsolete. How do I upload our new logo? I've uploaded it to Wiki Commons but unsure how to now transfer this over to the page? Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hkemp (talk • contribs) 10:56, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- If you post the name of the new file, I'm sure someone here would be happy to walk you through the process. Or, find the filename of the old image in the article (usually near the top in the infobox) and replace that filename with the one from commons. As long as there is not an image on en.wiki with the exact same name, the commons image will appear. UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 13:03, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

There might be an factual error running through multiple articles
[edit]Dear help desk,
I am a busy research assistant and do not have the time to correct this error in all the articles it might be found in. Also, I am not sure, if it is an actual error. (I do think it is).
The problem is the following:
In the Article on the "United States Intelligence Community" it is stated that: "The United States Intelligence Community (IC) is a cooperative federation of 16 separate United States government agencies that work separately and together to conduct intelligence activities considered necessary for the conduct of foreign relations and the protection of the national security of the United States."
Now, at least according to the official website of the Intelligence Community, it "is a coalition of 17 agencies and organizations within the executive branch that work both independently and collaboratively to gather the intelligence necessary to conduct foreign relations and national security activities." http://www.intelligence.gov/about-the-intelligence-community/
Of course, you can argue, as the article does later on, that "The IC consists of 16 members (also called elements). The Central Intelligence Agency is an independent agency of the United States government. The other 15 elements are offices or bureaus within federal executive departments. The IC is led by the Director of National Intelligence, whose office, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), is not listed as a member of the IC."
But my problem here is the following: While the IC itself officially claims to have 17 agencies, including the ODNI (which they DO list on their website, too!), everyone in the world does not read the whole article apparently, nor the official website, because it gets distributed in all other wikipedia articles and most official media that the IC has really only 16 elements.(Which - as I would argue - is not the whole truth; it is more factually correct, I think, to officially say "There's 17, but one really doesn't count", than to say "There's really only 16, while officially there are 17; but because one doesn't really count, 16 is right")
I hope you can correct this. I am willing to help with my Wiki-account, but since my job is to research for a publication, I do not have much time and cannot correct such a major mistakes (if you want to count it as such, as I would do) all on my own.
Thank you for your help and consideration! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fierce fennec (talk • contribs) 11:09, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- Could it be that one organization was recently added and therefore not yet covered in our articles? - 194.60.106.17 (talk) 13:06, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
- Nope, I already explained it on the talk page of United States Intelligence Community. There they did not count the Office of the Director of National Intelligence as one of the members of the IC. But if you look close enough on their websites - http://www.dni.gov/faq_intel.htm and http://www.intelligence.gov/about-the-intelligence-community/ - you can see that officially the IC does have 17 elements. While everyone is quoting the 16 from the wiki article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fierce fennec (talk • contribs) 13:41, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
REVISION TO SECTION ON A COMPANY I FOUNDED
[edit]MESSNER VETERE BERGER MCNAMEE SCHMETTERER is the name I was informed by wikipedia that an edit it did was not accepted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.68.96.175 (talk) 13:03, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer/Euro RSCG (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
- The section you added to the article isn't really appropriate for wikipedia, as it very clearly speaks from the perspective of the company. We are required to maintain a Neutral point of view, which precludes long passages and quotes such as this. Note also that, because you founded the company, you have a very clear Conflict of interest that almost certainly precludes you from editing the article. If you still feel that some portion of your proposed addition should be included, your best bet would be to discuss it at Talk:Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer/Euro RSCG, but be aware that other editors may disagree. editing
[edit]Hi Wiki,
Thanks for a great service!
I have been trying to edit the information about the Norwegian composer Helge Iberg (Wiki Norway - http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helge_Iberg), but after few minutes it snaps back. The new text is made by the composer himself, and I got the job to update his "page". What can I do about this?

- You need to address that on the Norwegian Wikipedia.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:49, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- It appears your edits on the Norwegian Wikipedia have been reverted by another user. I would suggest discussing with them -here is a link to their talk page. TNXMan 14:50, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- Or address it on the help desk of the Norwegian Wikipedia, here.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:51, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- I don't know what the policies of Norwegian Wikipedia are, but if you did this on English Wikipedia the new text would not be acceptable unless it was supported by independent reliable sources, and you would be strongly discouraged from inserting it in the article because you have a conflict of interest. If no. has similar policies, this may be why it was reverted. --ColinFine (talk) 18:34, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
Add a new external link to our (very interesting) Research Guides on different wiki pages.
[edit]Dear Sir/Madam, I just added an external link on a few wiki pages and received the following message:
It appears you are adding external links to many different Wikipedia pages in rapid succession. This is often a sign of people spamming Wikipedia. Persistent spammers may have their websites blacklisted, preventing anyone from linking to them from all Wikimedia sites. Before you continue you may wish to review Wikipedia's policies of external links and spam as these may help you decide whether these links are appropriate for Wikipedia. Please feel free to ask at the Help Desk if you have any questions. If you want to add references to the article, please, read WP:References for an appropriate way to do this. If you're sure you still want to make this edit, go to the bottom of this page and click 'Save page' again, and it will be submitted as is. If you were not trying to add links to many pages, and you received this message in error, you may report this error.
How can I be sure that my account is not going to be blocked (marked for spam) when I add a new external link to one of our Research Guides? I'm afraid that I will be blocked when I continue this, we have about 56 very interesting Research Guides at our library website that have much value to the different wiki pages they belong to.
How to continue? Is there a maximum number of adding links per day?
Thanks for your help.

- Your account has been blocked, see your talk page. You need to be aware that a Wikipedia account cannot be on behalf of a team; it must be for an individual; see WP:CORPNAME. Wikipedia is also very reluctant to accept edits which seem to be for the sole purpose of promoting or advertising an organisation. You have been given some useful links on your talk page, so pleaase read them. - David Biddulph (talk) 15:53, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
((ec)):Just to note that this is (obviously) the Peace Palace Library. WP:COI issues but clearly good faith and probably useful links of the sort we like. I don't think this is advertising. Dougweller (talk) 16:05, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- Editor is asking for an unblock, saying "Can you please confirm that it is not allowed for a library to add very useful links to our Research Guides (for example http://www.peacepalacelibrary.nl/research-guides/individuals-and-international-law/human-rights/). I really don't see how this can be of any harm to wikipedia or the people that are searching for information. Thanks, Bas Otting". Now obviously he needs to get a new account and not use one with a corporate name, and adding such links is technically COI, but I really think we want the links - they've all been removed, one editor who removed one restored it and I restored the other 3. So how do we advise Bas Otting? Dougweller (talk) 16:16, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- If he doesn't pick it up from the user talk page, you could use "E-mail this user". - David Biddulph (talk) 16:21, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- The advice in WP:CURATOR is "When in doubt, first suggest the addition of the link on the talk page of the article, or discuss the addition with an appropriate WikiProject". WP:GLAM may also be helpful. Gandalf61 (talk) 16:29, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
The block has been notched back to a causeblock rather than a spamblock; and several editors have offered them useful guidance in various places. I think we will be good. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:08, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Was endash the right choice?
[edit]I just moved some articles with hyphens to similar ones with endashes. I also replaced hyphens in the articles as well. Upon reviewing the MOS, I'm now unsure if I made the correct decision. Here are the articles that were part of the moves:
- Olympus OM-1 | Olympus OM–1 | Talk:Olympus OM-1 | Talk:Olympus OM–1
- Olympus OM-2 | Olympus OM–2 | Talk:Olympus OM-2 | Talk:Olympus OM–2
- Olympus OM-3 | Olympus OM–3 | Talk:Olympus OM-3 | Talk:Olympus OM–3
- Olympus OM-4 | Olympus OM–4 | Talk:Olympus OM-4 | Talk:Olympus OM–4
So is this the correct, or does it need to be reversed? NYCRuss ☎ 16:41, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- The manufacturer and every source I have found use a hyphen so changing to en dash sounds like a poor idea. The product itself also has a symbol far too short for an en dash at for example File:OM-4T-1.jpg. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:28, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- What is the best way to reverse what I've done? I can easily undo the edits in each article, but is there an easy way to flip the name spaces around so that the endash is now the redirect? NYCRuss ☎ 16:41, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
- There is no "undo" link for page moves. You have to make a new page move back to the old title. This is possible for non-administrators as long as the old title has not been edited since the move. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:51, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

- Your report at WP:AIV was exactly right. The bot is programmed to add comments like these to help the admins make their assessment. The IP you reported was blocked very soon after that, even before the timestamp of your post here. -- John of Reading (talk) 16:59, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
How were you able to find this out? Why was the IP immediately removed from the WP:AIV? — Preceding unsigned comment added by AnkhMorpork (talk • contribs) 17:04, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Spaces or TABs for indenting source code?
[edit]In the sample source code in A complete reentrant parser example (a section in a Wikipedia article) a mix of spaces and TABs are used for indenting the source code (in the C programming language in this example), and it works as long as TABs are equal to 8 spaces.
Should spaces or TABs be used for indenting source code in Wikipedia articles? --Mortense (talk) 17:47, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- I found this Wikipedia:WikiProject Computer science/Manual of style. It doesn't specify how many spaces or how the indents should be achieved in the pseudocode, just that indenting should be used where appropriate. It's a draft, but I don't think it really matters that much anyway.-- Obsidi♠n Soul 19:47, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

- For the simplest explanation of what is needed in your drafts, please see Wikipedia:The answer to life, the universe, and everything.
- Once you have understood that, please see the following policy and guideline pages:
- Wikipedia:Verifiability explains a core policy of Wikipedia that you comply with by...
- Wikipedia:Citing sources which prove both the reliability of the information and the...
- Wikipedia:Notability (people) of the subject which determines whether or not he/she should have an article in Wikipedia.
- Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources will also help you understand why IMDB is not considered a reliable source (IMDB is actually a user-edited site, much like Wikipedia), and help you find acceptable sources. And finally...
- Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners should help you learn how to add the sources you find to your draft articles.
- Also note that providing sources for the information you are adding is a strict requirement for biographies of living persons.
- They are quite lengthy but important nonetheless. If you have additional questions, don't hesitate to come back here and ask.-- Obsidi♠n Soul 19:29, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
People's Action Party (Singapore) - Article
[edit]Hello,
I would like to bring to your attention a problem with Wikipedia as I see it.
I edited the People's Action Party wiki article a few years ago.
I put in reference to one of the co-founders of the party (Lim Chin Siong) that was persecuted by former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. This was documented in a book (Comet in our Sky) by British scholars/professors using declassified British Government documents that proved Lim was not a communist as was claimed and used to keep him in prison for many years so he could not compete with Lee.
Lee Kuan Yew and his son have maintained control of the Singapore government and courts since the 1960's using less than honorable methods and are now using their power to control what goes onto wikipedia, it has even been stated by the party that they started a new project to "clean up the internet" regarding the party and Singapore's image.
All information on the wiki article about Lim's persecution has been removed, attempts to put it back result in messages that an edit conflict with another user has happened, this may be the result of some kind of robot edit machine that has been set up.
Wikipedia has now become the tool of dictators. I think Jimmy Wales should be made aware of this issue.
Best Regards, Russ Browne — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.67.50.179 (talk) 22:15, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- People's Action Party has been edited thousands of times by dozens, perhaps hundreds of people. It is certainly possible that the material in question was removed by somebody wishing to slant the article. There are however many other possible reasons, including that somebody might have though the material was not adequately referenced.
- What you have three times tried to add to the article is discussion about the article: this absolutely does not belong in the article, but it does belong on its talk page, where you can engage in discussion with others who are interested in the article - probably some of whom will agree with you about the matter, and some who won't. You may be able to reach consensus, or you may have to invoke Wikipedia's dispute resolution procedure. --ColinFine (talk) 23:34, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

- There is no user by that name. Can you please provide some context? Where did you see this? Was this a description someone used in relation to another user, etc. Without that context I am guessing this has something to do with testing the Article Feedback Tool ("AFT").--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:52, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

- For what it may be worth, afttest and afttest-hide are listed at Special:ListGroupRights. —teb728 t c 02:35, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
- From what it says there it appears that members of the afttest rights group can delete or hide aftv5 feedback and also see deleted or hidden feedback. —teb728 t c 06:43, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
