Blackberry v4.5.0.169 Wiki English Load Error

Prior to the May 13 Wiki reformatting I was able to access Wikipedia in English via my Curve 8330. I have worked with my service provider to troubleshoot other coincidental problems, and have found nothing. All non-Wikipedia web pages load properly. The Wikipedia "Globe" page loads too, but Browser fails trying to load "English" link - "A problem occurred while trying to render the page". Anyone have a work-around solution? Many thanks!! Somebody I know has been having the same problem - I'm not sure if they have the same version, but it is a Blackberry. It must be a problem with all of these models - they probably can't render some of the more advanced programming on the new wiki - maybe you could try the "Take Me Back" Link at the top to take you back to using the old version. That should fix it.

Do you have access to any computer (at a local library, perhaps) that you could use to access your account and try going back to the old version? Thanks Deor, just can't get in with V4.5x operating system. (I tried emailing link after reverting to "Take Me Back" on my account, but Blackberry failed to get past "Page Loading" error.) Blackberry V5.0x software (tested by myself at retail outlet, two new phones) did load pages without error. You (as somebody else mentioned)should make an account - it's really easy and only takes literally a minute, no personal info is needed - and make your account use the old version with the take me back button at the top so that when you sign in to it on your phone, you will be using the old, workable version. From your phone, use http://en.m.wikipedia.org - its the mobile version - it worked for me!

Edit filter triggered when creating new article

I tried to create a new article and I triggered the edit filter. I do not believe I broke a rule. The article is totally neutral. Is it because I just opened this account?

Chinese name

What's going on at the top of the Chinese name article? There is a partially formed redirect but I can't find where in the source this redirect is coming from. And if I bring up the last edit diff, the redirect doesn't show up. I think it has something to do with the Chinese Text template but I can't put my finger on just what it is. You have looked at the wrong history. Chinese name uses {{ChineseText}} which was edited incorrectly today.[1] You must have seen the article before the fix [2] reached it. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:57, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation page - linking new article

Since you don't have an account, the notices simply go on the user page of the IP address that you are using. IP addresses can change from one user to the next, so it's possible that the next time you come here, you'll have a different IP and different warnings waiting for you. Font size makes Wikipedia unusable

Most/all modern web browsers let you change the font size - for example, using Firefox or Chrome you can use Control + "-" (hold down "Control" (or "Ctrl") while pressing the "minus" key) to reduce the font size.
Alternatively, if you register an account you can simply do what I did - and go back to the old skin ;-)

Random article within a specific portal :/

Hello dear people,

I've just joined the wiki comunity, and want to support its Hebrew version. Of course, many of the articles in English doesn't appear in the Hebrew version, and I want to contribute by translating some of the articles. However, clicking the "Random article" gives back a lot of uninteresting stuff. It takes quite sometime to getting an article that's worth translating (if it doesn't have an Hebrew version that is).

Isn't there a way to searching for an article, not available in your own language, withing a bunch of subject you find interesting ?

There's got to be a way, and I'm probably not the first to ask this (though I was looking for similar questions ..)

There is an article of James Bondurant. The picture that the person used has my children in it. Yes we did take the picture with James. But this article was not done by James or any of his friends. The information is un true. BUT my main concern is I want my childrens picture taken off of this page. I never gave my permission to you it.

University of Health Sciences Antigua

I represent UHSA as the Vice President of Institutional Advancement and International Affairs. We sent a package to the Chair, Mr. Snow and to the legal representative of the Foundation, Mr. Godwin that clearly states that the information posted from the school is false. Links that are used as supporting evidence don't work. Several times we have made editions to the page stating the nature of this false information but its left the way it is. Mr. Snow has in his possession the evidence that the page was fixed and two months after someone managed to place the false ans malicious information as it was before.

We make a friendly request to fix this page since this situation is causing economical damages to the school.

Your assistance is appreciated.

I have fixed a couple of the dead links that were used as references. It would appear that the cited references do support the statements made in the article. Because of your conflict of interest you and your colleagues should not be editing the article. I’d like to echo what has been said and add some additional points. Wikipedia has a large number of policies and guidelines, but some are considered critically important. The fundamental principles of Wikipedia are summarized by what are called the Five pillars, one of which states that Wikipedia will have “a neutral point of view”. In support of this principle, information in articles must be verifiable. There are some statements in that article which I can understand are not viewed positively, but I looked at the cited sources and it appears to me that the statements in the article are supported by reliable sources. Having said that, if editors are presenting one side of a controversy, and not the other side, that could interfere with the presentation of a neutral point of view. If you are aware, for example, of verifiable sources representing another side to the issue, please post the information on the talk page, and editors will review to ensure that the article is properly balanced.
Please note that our polices discourage editing by individuals with a conflict of interest. You have identified a conflict, so you should stop editing the article directly. However, you are permitted, even encouraged to post relevant material on the Talk page so that other editors can review and improve the article.

Warning 4im

I was just wondering when I should use the Only Vandalism Warning?

I was thinking possibly if they had a final warning a month ago, it would probably be more appropriate to warn again, but only with a 4im?

It depends. If it's a registered user, then he/she will already have seen (and ignored) the final warning; if there are no "good" edits, then a 4im or even a straight trip to WP:AIV would do. If it's an IP address, the person at the computer this time may not be the person who was at the screen 1 month ago (check for contribution history) and so a further set of warnings, probably accelerated (i.e. don't necessarily feel you have to start at level 1 again), would probably be a good idea before reporting to AIV. I don't think that there's a right or wrong answer. I sometimes use it for a user / IP who has made multiple vandalistic changes without any warnings, rather than issue level 1, 2, 3 and 4 warnings like a real pedant! I'd go with the oh-so-famous and probably the most obvious page that may come to mind for many: the five pillars. Not only is it one of the first links a user receives in one of the many welcome template messages, but it nicely describes the core of Wikipedia and how it works. It links to and describes many of the things that many new users seem to have trouble understanding or grasping if and when they do have problems. It's also short, sweet, and to the point, which is important considering that we're talking about an potential-editor's very brief attention. Pages such as Wikipedia:Simplified ruleset are longer and less visually-appealing in comparison, and will probably fail to attract the potential-editor because of that. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 20:06, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bearing in mind the Blind men and an elephant story, and the potential editor's extremely limited attention span, I would not attempt to convey "the core" of how Wikipedia works, whatever that might mean. Instead I would try to determine what little bit of Wikipedia the potential editor might want to contribute to. Does the potential editor like to take pictures? If so, focus on image uploading and licensing. Does the editor just want to correct the occasional typo? Explain how we do that. And so on. Try to narrow down what the new editor wants to do, as far as possible, and explain the relevant slice of the Wikipedia "core". The basic problem for any potential editor is figuring out what to click on and what to type. It is not easy to impart a general understanding of Wikipedia, especially in a short time, but it is manageable to teach a person to do one particular task here. Question Regarding Templates and Indenting

I have a multiparagraph template in my userspace that I substitute in. I'd like for all paragraphs to retain the indent of its parent. Easiest way to explain is, let's say the template is called Rocko and is this:

The effect I'm desiring would be that all paragraphs the template respects whatever the initial indent would be (single colon, double colon, triple colon, ad nauseum) (the initial indent that is, remember, outside the template being substituted):

I can sort of "cheat" by swapping in "<br><br>" in place of the wiki line breaks, but that's not clean code and I'm wondering if there's wikiformatting that avoids the problem, as I can't imagine I'm the first to run into this particular question. Any idea? Hopefully this is the right place to ask this -- I didn't see a "wikiformatting help desk". Please feel free to direct me to a more proper venue if this isn't the right place! Use the Poem extension: wrapping text in <poem>...</poem> retains spaces and newlines. If you really want to just indent a whole chunk of text, then use {{quote box}} with no border and a margin. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 19:11, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I just tried your advice, and you might've misunderstood or something -- in any case, the <poem>...</poem> thing doesn't adress the problem. Summary version is that I'd like paragraphs within a template to inherit the indent given prior to it being subst-ed in, instead of going right back out to the left margin. Why all the images not shown?

all images on my webpage are not shown, including the logo of wiki...

do you happen to know why?

it used to work very well, and it is not because of my setting of the browser, as all images on other website are shown properly.

Browser settings can block images from a specific site without affecting other sites. In Firefox it's easy to accidentally block images on a site by right clicking an image and then clicking the wrong option. If you use Firefox then you may need (possibly some details depend on the version): Tools - Options - Content - Load images automatically - Click the "exceptions" button and delete http://upload.wikimedia.org from the list - Highlight - "Remove site" button. Have you tried Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer just about any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Needed to get new password but it wouldn't work, round 3

Follow-up from May 12th: (unable to log on) I never received a "change of password notification" from Wiki, so I don't know what the state of my (alleged) password is at the moment; I do know that the PC I'm currently using is a loaner since my former regular PC died--along with my usual browser (Firefox) and its stored passwords (I am its sole user--means that there is no chance I could be falling back onto old, stored incorrect data. And yes, of course the quotes in a cut & paste are being left out; I realize the advice is well meant (and necessary)--but I've been using computers since, well, before computers and PCs were synonymous. Not necessary in my case. So I'm still not sure what's going on. Try again with a new password? I'm not (yet) working with a stored password--one has to work before I store it. Any other ideas? I'm not deeply attached to my user name, but picking another one is a real PITA (sorry). I don't know how long temporary passwords last but I have just sent a new one to JoeRose50. Go to Special:UserLogin. After failed login attempts you may get the message: "To help protect against automated password cracking, please enter the words that appear below in the box". If that happens then enter the words. Write JoeRose50 with that capitalization in the username field and check it doesn't change before or when you click Log in. Write the password very carefully with correct capitalization. Thanks, PrimeHunter. I guess the third time really is the charm. I'm not sure what the problem was but whatever it was it seems to have gotten itself extirpated somehow. For reference (to those reading through the archives as it may apply to their own situations) I can state categorically, with as much certainty that anyone with decades of experience could state :that I've typed my username and password in their proper case: (years of providing technical support professionally have made me as keenly aware of the issue as you were; as I said before, I understood why you pointed it out--it was quite proper to do so. I really was at a loss when I came here for help--I had spent hours trying to figure out why I couldn't get Wiki to recognize a password change it had just made for me. My best (and only) guess is that there is some latency involved in processing the password change. Perhaps the email came to me before the database had been updated? But since I don't know how your internal systems are managed or how your database is distributed and managed, etc. there's any number of explanations that lie in that arena--all it took is some time for the "data" to, well, settle. Bottom line: I've been able to log in with the temporary password, and therefore been prompted to change it to a new permanent password (which I've done). Adding my own images

I am creating a wikipedia page for one Division of University of British Columbia, Canada. How can I download images from my computer to my page? I would not like to make them public. The images belong to the Division. I'm just starting to gather information for the page. Thank you!

Hi, a few points:
  1. No one owns a page
  2. Any images on Wikipedia are generally licenced under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license - which basically means that they can be used by anyone for any purpose (even commercial). The mere act of uploading them to Wikipedia makes them public
  3. For a division of the UBC to have its own article, it would need to be notable in its own right
  4. You have a clear conflict of interest in this case
  5. Your account name appears to be a role account for the UBC CPD, which is against the user name policy - and I will be blocking the account for that reason.

Searching with vector skin

How do I search Wikipedia while using the Vector skin? With the old skin, if you typed a name into the search box and clicked the magnifying glass (instead of hitting enter) it would take you to search results, even if an article by that exact name already existed. Now, it always takes you to the existing article and I have to dig through the special pages list to find the search page. It's super annoying. — jwillbur 23:34, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lyn001. The Faculty of Medicine division already seems to be listed at Faculties and Schools of the University of British Columbia including a link to the website. I doubt it has sufficient notability to merit it's own separate Wikipedia article, but if you can assert this notability and have reliable references to back it up, then I would recommend creating the article as a draft in your userspace, via the Article Wizard. However, as it looks like it was already mentioned to you in one of the posts above, you seem to have a conflict of interest and shouldn't be editing on this topic anyway. -- œ 00:23, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
