[edit]Moved extended discussion from User talk:Begoon
[edit]Thank you for removing the watermarks. You really saved me... I spent hours searching how can I remove them. Anyway, there are a lot of other images that have the same watermark and since the Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Photography workshop doesn't allow a lot of pictures to be put on the list, I listed only four of them. What should I do about the others? My love is love (talk) 15:50, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- They are quite tricky because of the way they are placed, and the nature of some of the low-res images. Are you going to use them in articles? You could tag them with
{{watermark}}
but I don't know how quick that would be. That relies on some kind soul coming along to do them. How many is "a lot?" Begoon talk 16:03, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, I'm going to use them. Maybe about 20. My love is love (talk) 16:35, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- Well, provided they are going to be used in articles, we can put them through the Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Photography workshop/Eight Requests which would probably get them done in a week to 10 days or so (it varies, and we can have more than 8 requests at a time). How does that sound?
- If any are urgent I can't see the harm in sticking another batch of 4 you want to use in articles right away in the main workshop.
- I'll move this to the workshop, because more graphists might get interested and they won't see it on my talk page. Begoon talk 17:13, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
Regarding watermarked images... tag all that are watermarked with {{watermark}}. If it's an attribution watermark, when the watermark is removed, change the tag to {{watermark removed}}. You may request any number of images here... there is no limit. However, I would advise only requesting those images that are likely to actually be used in the near future, because if you request an excessive number for no good reason, you might find that no one bothers with your request. – JBarta (talk) 17:44, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

Article(s): Joseph Story, Origination Clause
Request:
- Hi. I am looking for an image of Story to put into the article about the Origination Clause, so I would be happy to not alter this scratchy image at the Joseph Story article unless you would like to. For the Origination Clause article, how about a narrower head shot, all cleaned up? Thanks.-- Anythingyouwant (talk) 05:13, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s):
- Well, there's a crop for you. It's not the greatest and a better restoration can be had, (my skills and patience have limits) but hopefully that will suit your purposes. – JBarta (talk) 19:43, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
- That's excellent, thanks. Incidentally, I came across an image that seems to be a portrait based on the Daguerreotype (above) but I'd rather use the Daguerreotype, and will go install it now. Best Regards, Anythingyouwant (talk) 19:54, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
- I noticed that portrait and wikilinked the images together.
I tried to find a bigger version but had no luck.– JBarta (talk) 20:39, 26 August 2013 (UTC)- Nice work finding a higher quality painting. I guess the painting itself is at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Maybe they don't realize it was a derivative of the photo. I think much of the nuance in the photo is lost in the painting.Anythingyouwant (talk) 23:09, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
- This is not really what you would think of as a portrait painting but is instead a watercolor on ivory miniature which at 8.25 x 10.16 cm (3 1/4 x 4 in) is actually significantly smaller than would be the original half plate daguerreotype (4-1/4 x 5-1/2 in) itself. Centpacrr (talk) 23:37, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the interesting info, Centpacrr.Anythingyouwant (talk) 01:27, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- You're welcome Anythingyouwant. I'm quite sure this 1846 posthumus portraiture (Justice Story died in 1845) is based on the original Brady DG, but because of the nature of the medium Clark chose (watercolor on ivory) and its size it would be virtually impossible to match the detail of the original photographic image nor, would I expect, was that his intention. Also Clark might have never seen the original image but may instead have made this rendering from a published engraving of it. Centpacrr (talk) 01:50, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

Request:
- Can someone please remove the watermarks from these pictures? My love is love (talk) 18:59, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s):
- Question: We've done 9 of this set for you already, and as far as I can see, you are using 3 of those in articles. Are the 3 in this request for use in the article now in preference to the other 6 which are already done and are not yet used? Begoon talk 02:33, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
- Actually all of the files will be used in the articles. I was waiting for all of the images to be fixed so I could put them in the articles, but I will start adding them today. My love is love (talk) 13:44, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
- I've done 2 of them - I'll try and fit the other one in tomorrow if I get time, and nobody else has done it in the meantime. With the second one I truly can't see what's going on behind that watermark with the frilly bit, so I did the best I could - someone may be able to do better. Begoon talk 23:04, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

- Per WP:image use policy, a photo of the DVD case must be JPEG. I couldn't find a way to properly make a good JPEG copy. When I tried, the background is messed up. -- George Ho (talk) 15:33, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s):
- There's nothing wrong with the png. You're taking WP:IUP far too literally. We also use common sense. Thousands of images here and at Commons use png for transparency in this way - you can't have transparency in a jpeg - that's why you get problems converting it like you tried. It's fine as it is. Also, you could have just asked me, you know. Begoon talk 16:04, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
- You can't ignore policy per WP:POLICY, and that isn't even a guideline. And you can't consider it resolved. --George Ho (talk) 16:25, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
- I've removed the resolved tag, as is our practice when the requester is not happy. I've talked enough about this now, here and elsewhere. You are being far too literal and pedantic. That's all. I have tried to explain, and I would have thought our history together would mean you'd be able to listen a little more and react a little less - but I guess you have a bee in your bonnet about this, so I'll leave you to it. The png is fine, though - for all the reasons I've tried to explain. We don't change best practice to fit overly literal interpretations of a policy that I've never seen interpreted in that way before. We change the wording of the policy if we think it's necessary to prevent silly conversations like this. That's it from me. Begoon talk 17:00, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

Just in case, for admins: file:Cheers season 5.jpg. --George Ho (talk) 22:18, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
- I uploaded a jpeg version at that location, because that's what you requested, and at the end of the day it doesn't matter what I think. Do your own paperwork with regards to non-free rationales and deletions, and mark this as resolved if you're happy. What a total waste of time and effort. Ah, well. Begoon talk 07:27, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
Replaced PNG with JPEG. --George Ho (talk) 16:36, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
- And I've cleaned up and marked the file you orphaned in the process for deletion. I also fixed the file description on the jpeg. Any more time we can waste for you on this, or could you now mark it as resolved? Thanks. Begoon talk 06:18, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
This is a photo, not a logo. JPEG is encouraged for non-software screenshots and photos. PNG/SVG/GIF is fine for illustrations and software screenshots. --George Ho (talk) 06:21, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
- You're welcome. Please don't thank us. Begoon talk 06:26, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
I'm surprised that with all this twitching about png vs jpg no one has seen fit to straighten out all the crooked Cheers covers. Everyone is arguing over which color the turd should be and no one is addressing the fact it's a turd. George Ho, you want to do something actually useful here? Get the covers straightened out and properly cropped and don't worry so much about what format they are in. – JBarta (talk) 09:12, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

- Actually, the whole thing was a bit wonky where they'd stretched and twisted the font (Tango BT) in odd ways I didn't notice. It's as close as I want to get it now, but feel free to play with it... Begoon talk 18:30, 30 August 2013 (UTC)
- Ah..., I see what you mean, I must be going blind. That funny "corner" path error in the "T". Not in my original working file, so I missed it - must have been the "scour" extension in Inkscape (when you save as "optimised svg"). Fixed now, at the cost of slightly bigger file. Replaced title card with logo. --George Ho (talk) 15:38, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
- Hmmm... Did you just do that so you can include the "cast" image and still only have one non-free pic in the article? Begoon talk 16:07, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
- There are so many opening titles. There are "literally" two cast photos. Most adequate would be scenes and promo photos from season five to seven, literally because of the addition of the little boy. The title card came from season one; the other cast photo is replaced by another photo that may have minimal or no risks of replacing commercial value. --George Ho (talk) 16:20, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
- Well, I'm not saying I disagree with it, it might be a reasonable thing to do. JBarta made a reasonable point concerning the "Lucy" image he created for you not being superior to the screenshot, and maybe that's the sort of thing that needs consideration, too. It's up to editors at the article in the end whether this image is an improvement, or as good as, the screenshot. You'd have to have that discussion elsewhere, I guess. Graphist opinion(s): Request taken by Centpacrr (talk) 21:09, 11 September 2013 (UTC). I have fixed images 2 & 3, but after working for a couple of hours on image 1 I have come to the conclusion that the large deficit across Fred McMurray's face and collar area are so extensive as to not be sufficiently digitally repairable to make a usable image. I have searched through dozens of other images from this movie available online and only found two very small colorized cropped ones of this view which is used on the Universal Vault Series DVD but these are not big enough to be used to fix it. There are a number of other similar (but not the same) posed images used in a poster for the film that may be suitable as a substitute for this one. Anyone else who wants to take a shot at the damaged ebay is welcome to. Centpacrr (talk) 03:18, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
- That's fine, thank you for trying! Doing a quick google search, there's actually quite a few good stills from one of their other films, True Confession, which I'm sure are out of copyright. Not all the images will be used right away, I need to start a rewrite of the article first, but I promise they will be eventually. Great job, cheers!

- First I reduced the size. It was HUGE... which is great for a highly detailed image, but in this image the only fine detail was the halftone pattern. I reduced to about 1/3 it's original size... which is plenty for this image. Got rid of the halftone pattern, grayscaled and did a little assorted cleanup.
