Background

The Royal Society of Chemistry publishes The Merck Index, "an encyclopedia of chemicals, drugs and biologicals with over 10,000 monographs on single substances or groups of related compounds". The latest print edition was published in 2013, and an online version is available by subscription.

The various editions are widely cited in Wikipedia, using a mixture of bare citations, and custom citation templates for specific printed editions:

• {{Merck11th}} = 11 transclusions
• {{Merck12th}} = 19 transclusions
• {{Merck13th}} = 03 transclusions

There are currently no templates for editions 14 or 15 (the latter being the most recent on paper).

A search for 'Merck Index' shows 582 results in article space (a small number of which are not citations).

Proposal

It is proposed to replace the three templates listed above, and other citations, with a single combined template linking to the online version, (see draft at {{Cite Merck Index}}). Any data from earlier versions will be checked and updated as part of this process. The new template will be a wrapper to {{Cite web}}, to ensure conformance with standards and the emission of useful metadata.

Exclusions

This proposal relates only to The Merck Index of chemicals. It would have no bearing on {{MerckHome}}, {{MerckManual}}, {{MerckGeriatrics}}, nor any citations of other Merck works such as the Merck Veterinary Manual.
