- There are several problems with this image: it's a bit too loosely cropped; blown highligts; focus is quite a bit off; it appears to be oversaturated... Support cropped only , of course! --Janke | Talk 06:48, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
Support Yes, technically dreadful. I think the photographer should have got a bit closer - and used a tripod.Charlesjsharp (talk) 08:25, 11 April 2019 (UTC)- Here's a nice explanation of why the picture looks like it does: [1] --Janke | Talk 12:37, 11 April 2019 (UTC)

- There is a non-cropped version of this image: File:Black hole - Messier 87.jpg that may be used instead of the nominated image. When this is over, could we check which one is stable and promote that? MER-C 20:40, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, MER-C,if the uncropped is the original we must promote it, not this one. See current nomination on Commons. Charlesjsharp (talk) 08:40, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
- Added to the nomination. Usages are currently split between the two images, though. @Bammesk, Janke, Charlesjsharp, Adam Cuerden, Wow, Abzeronow, Daniel Case, and Yann: please consider the uncropped version. MER-C 09:12, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
- For Commons, I rather like to promote the original version. However, for Wikipedia. the cropped version may be better. Regards, Yann (talk) 09:25, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
- I agree, my support is for the cropped one, there's little EV in the black outside the hole... --Janke | Talk 10:37, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
- And in that vein, could the shadows perhaps be lifted slightly inside the event horizon? They seem a little clipped . Daniel Case (talk) 15:32, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
- I think both images are cropped, it's just a matter of who did the cropping and which you like better. OtterAM (talk) 23:25, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
- Support --Yann (talk) 08:25, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
- Support uncropped Charlesjsharp (talk) 13:34, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
- Support I came to this page to see whether this image had been proposed, and was happy to find it here. This is the best possible image of a black hole for the foreseeable future given that it essentially required a telescope the diameter of the Earth. OtterAM (talk) 22:40, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
- Comment There is one possible problem with the image, which is that the color scheme is slightly misleading. In this representation the colors represent intensity of light, not actual color. However, this is the choice that the team used, so we should probably stick with it. :) OtterAM (talk) 22:40, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Daniel Case, Yann, and OtterAM: Could you clarify which version(s) you support? Regards, Armbrust The Homunculus 11:20, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
- I will say that I support the cropped version, although I won't object if the uncropped version is favored. Daniel Case (talk) 13:55, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
- Idem. --Yann (talk) 15:09, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
- Cropped. (But either is fine.) OtterAM (talk) 23:21, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

Promoted File:Black hole - Messier 87 crop max res.jpg --Armbrust The Homunculus 15:03, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
- There is a rough consensus that the original (cropped) image should be promoted. Armbrust The Homunculus 15:03, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
